What are ghost marriages?

In China, ghost marriages are a 3,000-year-old custom held for deceased people. It is believed by many that if humans die without fulfilling their wishes like getting married, they will not get peace in the afterlife.

In line with this custom, the living person takes part in the ghost marriages along with the photo of the deceased and his/her clothes and other items are used to represent them. In the ceremony, traditional wedding customs are followed.

The story of Yu moved many people on social media platforms.

“This brave woman thinking of saving others in a crisis is remarkable,” said one user on Instagram.

“Her sense of responsibility and love for her boyfriend and his family is moving. Ghost marriage can be a form of spiritual comfort,” another added.

Two types of ghost marriages take place in China. In one of them, couples who died just before or after engagement, are married and buried together.
