<p>In the southern Indian state of Kerala and the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, there were partial shutdowns. However, even there, essential services were not affected.</p>

<p>In most other parts of the country, cars were moving freely on the roads, trains were plying as usual and government offices were functioning as usual.</p>

<p>There were no reports of mass rallies from these regions, there was no violence and certainly no 'confusion' as the NYT chose to put it.</p>

<p>The NYT report has quotes from two people of which one is a communist party member and the other is a trade union representative. The report did not have any comment from the government, no response from an official.</p>

<p>The report said, "...In Kerala, in the south, streets were empty and shops shuttered..."</p>

<p>However, the report does not mention that Kerala High Court had barred government employees from taking part in the strike.</p>

<p>Thousands of protesters took part in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ready-to-meet-with-protest-leaders-colombian-government-265835">anti-government demonstrations in&nbsp;Colombia's</a> capital Bogota and other cities Wednesday during the country's&nbsp;third&nbsp;general&nbsp;strike&nbsp;in two weeks.</p>

<p>Strike&nbsp;leaders say they intend to maintain&nbsp;pressure&nbsp;on&nbsp;right-wing President Ivan&nbsp;Duque's government, after brushing aside his appeals to cancel the&nbsp;strike&nbsp;on&nbsp;the grounds its effects were crippling the economy.</p>

<p>But crowds were smaller than previous demonstrations as protests took place for a 14th consecutive day.</p>

<p>Some roads were blocked in the capital and in the northeastern city of Cali, but many businesses remained open.</p>

<p>Around 250,000 people took part in the first demonstration against&nbsp;Duque's 15-month-old government&nbsp;on&nbsp;November 21, when the initial&nbsp;general&nbsp;strike&nbsp;brought the country to a standstill.</p>

<p>Its opposition to the strike slated to start Tuesday was a sign of division between protest leaders at a time of deadlock in talks with army generals over installing a civilian administration.</p>

<p>"A general strike is a weapon that should be used after it is agreed upon by everybody," Umma said.</p>

<p>"We have to avoid such escalated measures that are not fully agreed."</p>

<p>The National Umma Party led by former premier Sadiq Al-Mahdi said any such decision should be taken by a council of leaders of the protest movement.</p>

<p>Such a council was still not in place and "will be composed in a meeting on Monday", it said.</p>

<p>It was Mahdi's elected government that<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/sudans-ousted-president-bashir-charged-over-killing-of-protesters-218466"> Omar al-Bashir</a>, who himself was deposed last month, toppled in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989.</p>
