A study has found that an asteroid 20 times larger than the one that wiped off dinosaurs from the face of Earth struck Jupiter's moon Ganymede some four billion years ago. The strike shifted the moon's axis.

Scientists have known for a long time that Ganymede was once hit by a massive asteroid that resulted in the formation of concentric circles around a specific point on its surface.&nbsp;

"These giant impacts are believed to have been frequent in the early solar system," planetologist Hirata Naoyuki from Kobe University told Newsweek.&nbsp;

He added that the impact affected the interior structure of Ganymede "significantly". This is clear from the size of the transient crater as it makes up for 25 per cent of the size of Ganymede.

The study has been published in the journal Scientific Reports. Hirata studied the moon and realised that the site where the crater exists is almost exactly on the meridian opposite Jupiter. He concluded that the impact was so powerful that it shifted Ganymede's rotational axis.&nbsp;

Something similar happened to Pluto following an asteroid impact, the New Horizons space probe had revealed.

Simulations on the impact event showed that the asteroid that led to this dramatic reorientation was likely approximately 190 miles in diameter. This is 20 times more than the one that hit Earth 65 million years ago.&nbsp;

Ganymede hosts subsurface oceans and has been a likely candidate in the hunt for livable space bodies. Probes to study the moon further are in the pipeline. In 2015, the Hubble Space Telescope found evidence that Ganymede hosts an underground saltwater ocean 60 miles deep, almost 10 times deeper than the oceans on our planet.

The European Space Agency's JUICE space probe is also on its way to Ganymede, arriving its orbit in 2034. It will also study Callisto and Europa, Jupiter's other two icy moons.&nbsp;

NASA's Juno mission has made a significant observation of mineral salts and organic compounds on the surface of Ganymede, Jupiter's largest moon. This data was gathered by the Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) spectrometer during a close flyby of Ganymede. <h2>Juno flies over&nbsp;Jupiter's moon,&nbsp;Ganymede</h2>

On June 7, 2021, the Juno spacecraft flew over Ganymede at an altitude of 650 miles.

The JIRAM instrument captured infrared images and spectra of the moon's surface. JIRAM, built by the Italian Space Agency, was originally designed to study Jupiter's atmosphere but has also been used to explore the surfaces of Jupiter's Galilean moons - Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.

The JIRAM data collected during the flyby achieved a remarkable spatial resolution for infrared spectroscopy which exceeded 0.62 miles per pixel.

Using this data, Juno scientists identified and analysed unique spectral features of non-water-ice materials, including hydrated sodium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and possibly aliphatic aldehydes.

Federico Tosi, a Juno co-investigator from Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics in Rome and lead author of the paper in a statement said,&nbsp;“The presence of ammoniated salts suggests that Ganymede may have accumulated materials cold enough to condense ammonia during its formation."

“The carbonate salts could be remnants of carbon dioxide-rich ices," Tosi added.&nbsp;

<h2>Abundance of salts and organics</h2>

During the June 2021 flyby, JIRAM identified the greatest abundance of salts and organics in the dark and bright terrains at latitudes protected by Ganymede's magnetic field.

"If you listen closely, you can hear the abrupt change to higher frequencies around the midpoint of the recording, which represents entry into a different region in Ganymede's magnetosphere."

"It is possible the change in the frequency shortly after closest approach is due to passing from the nightside to the dayside of Ganymede," said William Kurth, lead co-investigator of the Waves instrument, who is based at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, in a statement.

NASA’s Galileo spacecraft flew by Ganymede in the 1990s and confirmed the presence of an interior ocean, also finding evidence for salty water perhaps from the salt known as magnesium sulfate.

Ganymede, which with its diameter of about 3,300 miles (5,300 km), is the largest moon in the solar system and is bigger than the planet Mercury.

Ganymede boasts a lot of water, perhaps 25 times the volume of Earth’s oceans. Its oceans are estimated to be about 500 miles (800 km) deep.

Ganymede is one of five moons in the solar system thought to have oceans hidden below icy surfaces. Two other moons, Europa and Callisto, orbit the big gas planet Jupiter. The moons Titan and Enceladus circle the ringed gas planet Saturn.

The Hubble Space Telescope recently discovered water vapour around Jupiter's moon Ganymede &nbsp;- the largest moon in our solar system.

The water vapour is formed around the icy surface of the moon through the process of sublimation in which the vapour turns into gaseous form from solid. To detect this water vapour, astronomers used a combination of fresh observations and archival content from the Hubble Telescope, in a study published on Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Ganymede is the ninth-largest object in our solar system and contains more water than all of of the oceans on Earth. According to previous research, Jupiter's moon is 2.4 times smaller than Earth. Jupiter moon's is a cold body, with temperatures that can drop as low as -184 degree Celsius (300 degrees Fahrenheit). The surface of the moon is made up of frozen water ice shell.

At least 161 kilometres (100 miles) below the moon's crust lies a salty ocean. Earlier, researchers were convinced that the ocean couldn't have evaporated from the ice shell to create vapour.

The moon is named after an ancient Greek divine hero and is also the only moon to possess a magnetic field, which produces auroras on the moon's north and south poles. The first ultraviolet images of Ganymede were captured by the Hubble in 1998 which revealed these auroras. The same telescope was used in 1996 with no clear indications about the peculiar features of the moon.

Ganymede doesn't have a persistent temperature across the day and it changes significantly over the duration of the day - during noon, the moon's equator becomes warm enough for&nbsp;the ice to sublimate or to essentially release water molecules in small amounts.

Juno Principal Investigator Scott Bolton of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio said, “This is the closest any spacecraft has come to this mammoth moon in a generation”. He added, “We are going to take our time before we draw any scientific conclusions, but until then we can simply marvel at this celestial wonder”. 
 
The spacecraft’s JunoCam visible-light imager used its green filter and captured almost an entire side of the water-ice-encrusted moon. Later, the imaging experts will be able to provide a colour portrait of Ganymede.

This will be done when versions of the same image will come down incorporating the camera’s red and blue filters. The image resolution is about 0.6 miles per pixel.&nbsp;

Heidi Becker, Juno’s radiation monitoring lead at JPL said, “The conditions in which we collected the dark side image of Ganymede were ideal for a low-light camera like our Stellar Reference Unit. So this is a different part of the surface than seen by JunoCam in direct sunlight. It will be fun to see what the two teams can piece together".

As a result, all electromagnetic and radio waves get amplified and are picked up by spacecraft hovering in space. These electrons also create auroras in the ultraviolet spectrum.

NASA will extend two of its planetary discovery missions including&nbsp;its Juno which detected the "cyclotron maser instability (CMI)" from&nbsp;Ganymede in the first place.

"Electrons spiralling in Jupiter's magnetic field are thought to be the cause of the radio noise we hear," NASA said in a statement.&nbsp;

Like Earth, Ganymede has a liquid iron core that generates a magnetic field, though Ganymede’s field is embedded within Jupiter’s magnetic field. That sets up an interesting dynamic with telltale visuals – twin bands of glowing aurora around Ganymede’s northern and southern polar regions. As Jupiter rotates, its magnetic field shifts, causing Ganymede’s aurora to rock.

NASA Planetary Science Division Director Jim Green called the finding “an astounding demonstration.” “They developed a new approach to look inside a planetary body with a telescope,” Green said.
