A son of Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden has been barred from returning to France, where he lived for years painting landscapes in a Normandy village, after allegedly posting comments on social media deemed to have glorified terrorism.

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said he had signed an order banning Omar Binladin from France after the judiciary confirmed the legality of a prior deportation order issued on grounds of national security.

Retailleau gave no details about the timing of the deportation or where Binladin had been sent.

"Mr Binladin, who has lived in the Orne region for several years as the spouse of a British national, posted comments on his social networks in 2023 that glorified terrorism," Retailleau said on X.

"The administrative ban ensures that Mr Binladin cannot return to France for any reason whatsoever."

Binladin could not be reached for comment.

Pascal Martin, who helped Binladin sell his paintings, described him as a man who opposed Islamist ideology, who earned a living from his artwork and paid his taxes. Binladin was currently in Qatar, Martin said.

"We became friends and I can tell you that nothing that is being said resembles the Omar I know," Martin told Reuters.

According to local weekly newspaper Le Publicateur Libre, Binladin caught the attention of French authorities over a social media post on the anniversary of his father's birthday. Osama bin Laden was killed by US forces in 2011.

Reuters was not immediately able to locate the social media post. Martin said Binladin had told friends his social media account had been hacked.

The paper reported in July 2023 that police had searched for Binladin in the village of Domfort, Normandy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday (Oct 6) evening and told him that placing an arms embargo on Tel Aviv would only serve Iran and its proxies.

The phone call came less than 24 hours after Macron called for a halt in delivery of arms to Israel for use in Gaza, which provoked a sharp response from the Israeli PM who termed it a 'shame'.

"Just as Iran supports all parts of the Iranian terror axis, so are Israel's friends expected to support it, and not impose restrictions that will only strengthen the Iranian axis of evil," Netanyahu told Macron, a statement from his office read.

The Israeli PM justified his military's action in Lebanon stating that Hezbollah's elimination was essential for better regional stability and allow Israelis in the north to return to their homes.

Earlier this week, Hezbollah's backer, Iran, launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles on major Israeli cities, prompting the entire 10 million population of the country to seek refuge in bomb shelters.

Consequently, on the eve of the October 7 attacks, Israel pounded southern Beirut with heavy airstrikes with a retaliatory action against Iran anticipated by many. Tehran even announced cancellation of all flights till Monday (Oct 7) morning, citing "operational limitations".

Hundreds of people joined for a silent march in support of French woman Gisele Pelicot and other female victims of sexual violence on Saturday (Oct 5) in Mazan, the village where Gisele’s husband is accused of drugging her and inviting over 80 men to rape her at their home.

Men and women came out in solidarity with Gisele, 72. However, members of the woman's family did not attend the march but said that they appreciated the public support.

One woman at the march said, “I am there as a woman, mother and grandmother … I am here firstly to support Gisèle who is really very brave, and other women and girls.”

She said she hoped the case would persuade people to "listen to women...and not close their eyes" to sexual abuse.

The march by French people comes a day after judges at the mass rape trial in Avignon agreed to allow videos made by Dominique Pelicot of the alleged abuse of his wife to be shown to the press and public in the courtroom.

The president of the bench, Roger Arata, argued the court should be cleared of those not directly involved in the case because the videos represented an affront to public decency and were too "shocking".

The bench agreed to allow them to be screened in open court after Pelicot's lawyers insisted their client wanted them shown.

Gisele was drugged to the point, that she had no memory of the rapes and said that the videos are proof of what she suffered.

French international footballer Paul Pogba said Friday his "nightmare is over" after a four-year ban for doping was reduced to 18 months.

Pogba, who is under contract with Italian giants Juventus until 2026, will be able to return to competitive football from March 11 next year, four days before his 32nd birthday.

"Finally the nightmare is over. I can look forward to the day when I can follow my dreams again," the player said in a statement released to Britain's Press Association.

"I always stated that I never knowingly breached World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations when I took a nutritional supplement prescribed to me by a doctor, which does not affect or enhance the performance of male athletes.

"I play with integrity and, although I must accept that this is a strict liability offence, I want to place on record my thanks to the Court of Arbitration for Sport's judges who heard my explanation.

"This has been a hugely distressing period in my life because everything I have worked so hard for has been put on hold."

Earlier Friday, a spokesperson for the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed that Pogba's suspension had been slashed.

"I can confirm the decision: an 18-month suspension with effect from 11 September 2023. The reasons for the decision will follow later," the CAS spokesperson told AFP.

Pogba tested positive for testosterone in August 2023 after a match between Juventus and Udinese in Italy.

He was provisionally suspended in September of the same year, and then banned for four years by the Italian National Anti-Doping Tribunal the following February.

Pogba's representatives said the testosterone came from a food supplement prescribed by a doctor he consulted in the United States.

After the ban was announced, Pogba posted on his Instagram account that he had "never knowingly or deliberately" taken doping products.

"I am sad, shocked and heartbroken that everything I have built in my professional playing career has been taken away from me," he wrote at the time.

On Friday evening, after the CAS ruling, his post was wordless, showing only a close-up of two feet wearing Pogba football boots with socks bearing his initials and decorated with the French flag and the two World Cup stars.

A key figure when France won the 2018 world title in Russia, Pogba collected four Serie A titles in his first stint at Juventus but had a string of problems, on and off the pitch, after his 2022 return from Manchester United.

During the 2022-23 season, Pogba made just 10 appearances for the club, mainly due to a knee injury that also ruled him out of the World Cup in Qatar, where France lost out to Argentina in the final in December 2022.

He was also the victim of a case of organised extortion, for which six men, including his brother Mathias, were last month ordered to stand trial.

After months of political gridlock France finally has a new government in place. With a deadline on 2025 budget approaching, the new lawmakers have their work cut out. France finally got a new government Saturday (Sep 21) in a shift to the right, as left-wing protesters took to the streets to denounce what they say is a denial of July's election results. The cabinet announced by French President Emmanuel Macron and led by Prime Minister Michel Barnier comes 11 weeks after an inconclusive parliamentary election. Barnier's first major task will be to submit a 2025 budget plan addressing France's financial situation, which the prime minister this week called "very serious". Conservative Barnier is best known internationally for leading the European Union's Brexit negotiations with the UK. More recently, he has had the difficult job of submitting a cabinet for Macron's approval that has the best chance of surviving a no-confidence motion in parliament. Talks on the distribution of the 39 cabinet posts continued right up to Saturday's official announcement, insiders said, with moments of high tension between the president and his prime minister. Opposition politicians from the left have already announced they will challenge his government with a confidence motion. In the July election, a left-wing bloc called the New Popular Front (NFP) won the most parliamentary seats of any political bloc, but not enough for an overall majority. Macron argued that the left would be unable to muster enough support to form a government that would not immediately be brought down in parliament. He turned instead to Barnier to lead a government drawing mostly on parliamentary support from Macron's allies, as well as from the conservative Republicans (LR) and the centrist groups. Watch | France: Barnier meets leaders from all political parties × 'No future' Macron was counting too, on a neutral stance from the far right -- but the leader of the National Rally (RN) Jordan Bardella was quick to condemn the composition of the new government. It marked "a return to Macronism" and so had "no future whatsoever", he said Saturday. At the other end of the political spectrum, far-left firebrand Jean-Luc Melenchon called the new lineup "a government of the general election losers". France, he said, should "get rid" of the government "as soon as possible". His party threatened to "increase popular pressure" on the government. Socialist party chairman Oliver Faure dismissed Barnier's cabinet as "a reactionary government that gives democracy the finger". "An unnatural government against nature," was the verdict of Marine Tondelier, leader of The Ecologists party. Among the new faces in key cabinet posts are Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot. His portfolio covers immigration and his right-wing credentials have created unease even in Macron's own camp. Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu, a close Macron ally, has kept his job. The difficult job of submitting a budget plan to parliament next month falls to 33-year-old Antoine Armand, the new finance minister. He has previously served as head of parliament's economic affairs commission. But Greenpeace condemned the appointments of Republican Annie Genevard and Macronist Agnes Pannier-Runacher to the agriculture and climate briefs respectively. "We need radical and ambitious action to tackle the climate and social crises, but this government already seems stuck in the outdated logic of the old world," said its executive director for France Jean-Francois Julliard. The only left-of-centre politician is little-known former Socialist Didier Migaud, named justice minister. Street protests Even before the announcement, thousands of people took to the streets of Paris and other French cities Saturday to protest. They were objecting to a cabinet they say does not reflect the outcome of the parliamentary election. The new government has nobody from inside the NFP bloc. "I am here because this outcome does not correspond to how people voted," said Violette Bourguignon, 21, demonstrating in Paris. "I am worried and I'm angry. What is the point of having an election at all?" she said. Barnier is to address parliament with a key policy speech on October 1. He then has the urgent task of submitting a budget plan to the National Assembly aimed at controlling France's rising budget deficit and debt mountain -- the first major test of his administration. France was placed on a formal procedure for violating European Union budgetary rules before Barnier was picked as head of government. France's public-sector deficit is projected to reach around 5.6 per cent of GDP this year and go over six per cent in 2025. EU rules set a three-percent ceiling on deficits. "I am discovering that the country's budgetary situation is very serious," Barnier said in a statement to AFP Wednesday, adding that the situation required "more than just pretty statements". The new cabinet's first meeting is scheduled for Monday afternoon. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Macron appoints new right-wing French government, 3 months after poll results

French President Emmanuel Macron has named a new government, hoping to put an end 11 weeks of political uncertainty after an inconclusive parliamentary election delivered a hung parliament. Conservative Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Saturday put together the government whose first major task will be to submit a 2025 budget plan addressing France’s financial situation, which the prime minister this week called “very serious”.

"I am a rapist," declared Dominique Pelicot, a Frenchman accused of drugging his wife for sexual assault by himself and dozens of strangers, in his first testimony at a trial that has shocked France. The 71-year-old, using a cane, entered the courtroom in Avignon on Tuesday with his now ex-wife present for the harrowing testimony.

The trial of a Frenchman accused of recruiting strangers to rape his heavily sedated wife was suspended on Monday (Sep 16) after he failed to show up in court due to ill health. The presiding judge had adjourned the trial of Dominique Pelicot until Monday after the accused was excused from attending proceedings for most of last week because of his deteriorating health. But his lawyer told AFP that Pelicot, 71, was still not well enough to attend. "He will not be there today," Beatrice Zavarro said, unless "he is taken by force" from his cell. She said Pelicot was suffering from "a clot in the bladder" and the beginning of a kidney infection. "I have been advised that Mr Pelicot has refused his extraction" from his cell, presiding judge Roger Arata said. After a short deliberation, Arata suspended proceedings for the rest of the day pending examinations of Pelicot by medical experts. "I hope they will be able to advise us on Mr Pelicot's ability to appear in court," Arata said. Pelicot, who has not yet testified at the trial, is accused of enlisting dozens of strangers to rape his drugged wife over almost a decade. He has admitted to the allegations. Gisele Pelicot, his ex-wife who only discovered the abuse in 2020, requested that the trial be open to the public to raise awareness about the use of drugs to commit sexual abuse. Thousands took to the streets across French cities at the weekend to demand an end to rape and to support her. "We are all Gisele," a large crowd chanted in Paris.
