Thousands of people took to the streets in major French cities against violence targeting women as the case of a 71-year-old woman came in limelight this year, who was raped by nearly 50 men for years.

France mass rape trial entered the final stage this week. In the coming week, the prosecutors will ask the court in the southern city of Avignon to sentence 51 men, including the one who drugged his wife for over a decade and dozens of others who accepted his invitations to abuse her at their home.

"The more of us there are, the more visible we are, this is everyone's business, not just women," Peggy Plou, a local elected official from the Indre-et-Loire region in western France who had made the trip to Paris, said during the protest.

Many of the protesters were seen carrying signs with the slogan "Shame must switch sides", which was popularised by the plaintiff in the Avignon trial, Gisele Pelicot.

Iran said on Sunday that it would hold nuclear talks in the coming days with the three European countries that initiated a censure resolution against it adopted by the UN's atomic watchdog.

Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the meeting of the deputy foreign ministers of Iran, France, Germany and the United Kingdom would take place on Friday, without specifying a venue.

"A range of regional and international issues and topics, including the issues of Palestine and Lebanon, as well as the nuclear issue, will be discussed," the spokesman said in a foreign ministry statement.

Baghaei described the upcoming meeting as a continuation of talks held with the countries in September on the sidelines of the annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

On Thursday, the 35-nation board of governors of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution denouncing Iran for what it called a 'lack of co-operation'.

The move came as tensions ran high over Iran's atomic programme, which critics fear is aimed at developing a nuclear weapon, something Tehran has repeatedly denied.

It also came after IAEA head Rafael Grossi returned from a trip to Tehran, where he appeared to have made headway.

During the visit, Iran agreed to an IAEA demand to cap its sensitive stock of near weapons-grade uranium enriched up to 60 per cent purity.

In response to the resolution, Iran announced it was launching a "series of new and advanced centrifuges".

But the United States unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018 under then-president Donald Trump and reimposed biting economic sanctions, which prompted Iran to begin rolling back on its own commitments.

Tehran has since 2021 decreased its cooperation with the IAEA by deactivating surveillance devices monitoring the nuclear programme and barring UN inspectors.

At the same time, it has increased its stockpiles of enriched uranium and the level of enrichment to 60 per cent.

That level is close, according to the IAEA, to the 90 per cent-plus threshold required for a nuclear warhead, and substantially higher than the 3.67 per cent limit it agreed to in 2015.

Prosecutors have called for Marine Le Pen to serve jail time and be banned from holding public office following her trial over charges related to spreading hate speech. A Paris court ordered Google on Wednesday (Nov 13) to suspend a project that allegedly aimed at limiting the visibility of certain news articles in search results.

The order has been issued in response to a request from SEPM, a union representing magazine staff in France. The union alleged that Google planned to start a scheme that would exclude some articles from publishers involved in a dispute over rights for the use of online news content.

A time-limited experiment

Google, as per news agency AFP, described the project as a “time-limited experiment” intended to assess how European publishers' content affects user experience on search engines.

In recent years, tech giants like Google have faced increasing pressure to compensate news providers for their content, which is displayed in search results. To address these concerns, the European Union introduced a form of copyright legislation, called the “neighbouring rights” legislation, giving media outlets the right to demand compensation for content used online.

SEPM welcomes decision

France, where Google and SEPM have been in long-running negotiations, has been a testing ground for these rules. After initially resisting, both Google and Facebook have since agreed to pay some French media companies. However, the Paris court’s latest order asks Google “to not proceed to test” its scheme, or risk a potential fine of “300,000 euros each”.

The SEPM union, representing around 80 media groups, welcomed the ruling, claiming it would “preserve the interests of the French press”. Google, however, expressed surprise at SEPM’s opposition, arguing that the project aimed to gather data because “independent administrative authorities and press publishers have asked us for more information on the impact of the display of news content in our search engine.”

Earlier this year, France’s competition authority fined Google €250 million ($263 million) for failing to meet specific commitments regarding neighbouring rights. Google is not alone in these disputes; social media platform X (formerly Twitter) also faces lawsuits from French publishers like Le Monde and Le Figaro over similar payment issues.
