Extreme weather is gripping multiple European nations as severe wildfires, flash floods and powerful storms force thousands of people to evacuate.

France is battling a major wildfire across the Cap Ferret Peninsula in the southwest, where extreme summer heat and months of drought have created dangerous fire conditions. Authorities ordered the evacuation of the popular tourism hotspot as flames threatened homes and the peninsula’s main escape route.

More than 10,000 hectares of forest have reportedly been affected, while around 63,000 people, including large numbers of tourists, were forced to leave the area. Boats and emergency teams were deployed as authorities worked to protect residents and visitors.

Spain is also facing a contrasting weather crisis, with intense wildfires occurring alongside torrential rainfall and flash flooding. Heavy rains disrupted road and rail transport and injured more than 11 people.

Europe Battles Extreme Weather: France, Spain, Serbia & Bosnia Hit By Wildfires, Floods And Storms

France and Spain are battling one of the worst wildfire emergencies in recent years as extreme heat, dry conditions, and powerful winds fuel massive blazes across Western Europe.

In France, thousands of residents have been evacuated after wildfires burned more than 14,000 hectares, forcing people to flee by land and sea. Tourist destinations have also been affected as emergency crews race to contain the flames.

In Spain, firefighters are battling fast-moving wildfires near Madrid and other regions, while authorities have declared emergency measures. NASA even evacuated one of its deep-space communication facilities as flames approached the area. European Union countries have deployed specialized firefighting aircraft to support efforts across both nations.

Neighbours called the fire department around 1:00 am to report the fire blaze.

A total of 80 firefighters arrived at the site. While the black smoke filled in the house, it was difficult for them to get their ladders to the top windows of the house.

According to the firefighters, the house's electric window shutters were blocked due to a power outage, which hampered the rescue operation.

This fire blaze is by far the deadliest in the country in a decade. A similar tragic incident erupted in 2013 when five children between two and nine also died due to asphyxiation in an accidental fire in northern France.

More than 3,000 vacationers were evacuated after a blaze threatened to spread across four campsites in the south of France, as a fireman died on his way to the scene, officials said.

Strong winds whipped up the flames in Torreilles, Pyrenees-Orientales, where thousands of French and other European tourists were staying, with 22 bungalows completely destroyed.

"We saw smoke...the people from the campsite asked us to leave straight away and leave our cars behind us," said one retired holidaymaker.

The fireman travelling to the site lost control of his vehicle due to an unexplained engine fault and died at the scene.

Three volunteer firefighters in the fire-engine with him were rushed to hospital in a critical condition, local official Helene Girardot told AFP.

A further 17 firefighters suffered from smoke inhalation and two others were injured when one of the campers gas canisters exploded as they battled the flames.

All but a handful of families were able to return to their camps by nightfall.
