The extent of the historic flooding in Fort Lauderdale was captured&nbsp;in a drone video that is doing the rounds on social media. It&nbsp;shows&nbsp;multiple cars stuck on inundated roads&nbsp;owing to the&nbsp;torrential rains that started on Wednesday (April 12)&nbsp;in South Florida and triggered the first flash flood emergency on record in Broward county.

On Wednesday, the Fort Lauderdale area received more than 25 inches of rain, according to the Weather Prediction Centre of the National Weather Service. This storm would break the state's 24-hour rainfall record after it was officially confirmed by the NWS.

In Key West, Florida, a 24-hour rainfall total of 23.28 inches was previously recorded, reported Fox News.

Drone footage captured in Fort Lauderdale shows a number of cars that have been left and are now submerged in the floodwaters that are fast rising.

Although no one can be seen in the video, the submerged automobiles' blinking danger lights give away the impact of the floods&nbsp;which happen&nbsp;once in&nbsp;1,000 years.&nbsp;

Ian Oliver, a meteorologist with FOX Weather, claims that just because a flood of this magnitude happened in Fort Lauderdale once in 1,000 years doesn't mean that it won't happen again in the next 1,000 years. The possibility of that happening in any one year is instead "one-tenth of 1%," Oliver continued.

Due to the record flooding, the city of Fort Lauderdale declared an emergency, and first responders have been on the scene in force, attending to countless rescue calls.

Additionally, the Wednesday closure of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) was a result of the floods. On Thursday, the airport was scheduled to reopen at noon. However, according to officials, the airport won't reopen until 5 a.m. on Friday because of the amount of flooding and debris on the airfield.

Videos and pictures show water gushing inside of buildings all around the region as floodwaters entered.

In one image, water can be seen dripping through a glass door, and in another video, a garage door opens to reveal the enormous amounts of water flooding the streets.

Concerns about more flooding in the area are high&nbsp;by the prospect of more severe rain in South Florida for the remainder of the week.

Additionally, the Southeast, particularly Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, is at risk for severe weather.

"Major flash flooding is occurring with numerous roads, interstates, and homes flooded with water rescues ongoing!" the agency tweeted. "Please stay home and do not travel!"

The Nashville Fire Department said it rescued at least 130 people from cars, apartments and homes, while about 40 dogs were moved from a Nashville boarding kennel, Camp Bow Wow, to another location.

As many as 18 homes in one neighborhood had to be evacuated.

The Metropolitan Nashville police chief said three bodies were found after Seven Mile Creek flooded.

Nashville recorded 5.75 inches (14.6 centimeters) of rain Saturday, the weather service said, setting a new record for the most rainfall in the city on a March day. It was also the fourth-wettest day in the city's history. Almost another inch of rain fell after midnight.

The fire department responded to reports of a collapse at the building following a mudslide, news outlets reported. The two hospitalised patients had injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

At least eight people have died, including two British nationals, and several others are missing in flash floods on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, authorities and emergency services said Wednesday.

Footage broadcast on Spanish television showed cars being swept away by raging waters and houses flooded after the Mediterranean island was pounded with heavy rain in just a few hours.

One witness told a local newspaper he had to swim out of his car through a window to safety.

"I swam 500 metres (1,650 feet) through the torrent until I got to a house," Manuel Torrescusa, told the Diario de Mallorca.

"I hardly had any clothes on me as they all got caught on a metal fence when I was swimming."

On Twitter, emergency services in the Balearic Islands said eight people had died in the villages of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, S'Illot and Arta.

A spokesman for the Spanish central government's office in the archipelago said other people were missing.

Antonia Bauza, deputy mayor of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, told Spanish radio that two British nationals were among the dead.

She added there were also Britons among the missing.

Neither the emergency services, police nor the British foreign office were able to confirm this when contacted by AFP.

Ibiza, Formentera on alert

Spain's meteorological office said the neighbouring islands of Ibiza and Formentera were now on high alert as the rain and storms moved there.

In Majorca, the worst affected area lies 60 kilometres (37 miles) east of the capital Palma de Majorca.&nbsp;

Rescue workers searched overnight for missing people.

Around 100 extra emergency workers were dispatched from the Spanish mainland, along with two helicopters, eight vehicles and search dogs, the country's emergency military unit said.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted his "solidarity and support for the relatives and friends of the victims, and for all those affected by this tragic flooding."

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, who is from the affected area in Majorca, said on Instagram he was offering to open up his sports centre and tennis academy to people displaced by the floods.

"Our most sincere condolences to the loved ones of the victims of the serious floods in San Llorenc," he wrote.

Many locals hit by the flooding spent the night in sports centres.

Maria Magdalena Ferrer, spokeswoman for the Manacor Hospital in the affected area, told AFP people "who were in the hospital yesterday and weren't able to go home" stayed the night.

She added five people had been admitted with injuries, none of them serious.
