Finland has started construction of 200 kilometre fence along its border with Russia in an attempt to boost security. The Finnish government is wary of Moscow trying to mass mobilise the troops along the said border, especially after the invasion of Ukraine. The Finnish Border Guard stated that terrain work will start after receiving forest clearance and "will proceed in such a way that road construction and fence installation can be started in March”. The fence is expected to be three metre tall with barbed wire on top. Night vision cameras, floodlights as well as loudspeakers will be installed in key sections of the fence. Notably, the announcement comes on the same day as the Finnish parliament kicked off a debate aimed at accelerating the bid to join NATO. A vote on the bill is scheduled to take place on Wednesday and is expected to sail through without much opposition. Apart from the debate, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President Sauli Niinisto and informed about the progress on the NATO membership bid of the Nordic country. We are making progress. A couple of weeks ago, I met with President Erdoğan and we agreed to have a meeting with Finland, Sweden, and Turkey in Brussels next week," said Stoltenberg. "This is a top priority for NATO and for me personally and so we work hard and we have to remember that so far this is the quickest accession process in NATO’s modern history," he added. Finland has one of the longest borders (1,340 km) in Europe with Russia. Currenly, the border is protected using light wooden fences. After the war broke out, the country dropped its military non-alignment policy and applied to join the military alliance. Read more: Are Swedish gangs receiving weapons destined for Ukraine? Criminal gangs in Sweden may have access to far more powerful weapons, possibly shipped from Ukraine, according to a report by Sputnik News. The arms smugglers in the second-largest city of Gothenburg have been receiving requests to procure weapons from the conflict-hit regions of Ukraine. The report comes in the backdrop of Europol - the EU's law enforcement agency, issuing a warning in July last year. The agency stated that ”the proliferation of firearms and explosives in Ukraine could lead to an increase in weapons and munitions trafficked into the EU via established smuggling routes or online platforms." Sweden may not be the only Nordic country in the region to have gained access to Ukrainian weapons. Last year in October, the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) stated that weapons sent to Ukraine may have found their way back to Finland. Incidentally, both countries are currently vying for a spot in NATO, ever since Russia invaded Ukraine. Read more: Finland inches closer to becoming NATO member while Sweden’s bid delayed by an ‘irate’ Turkey Similarly, Ukraine-bound weapons have surfaced in the Sahel region of Africa and nations around the Chad basin. Why has Sweden become the destination for Ukrainian weapons? Lately, gun-related violence has increased manifold in Sweden. According to the Swedish national council for crime prevention, it is the only European country where fatal gun shooting incidents have increased since 2000. The jump from being the country with the lowest rates of gun violence to the highest within a couple of decades has surprised experts. Former prime minister Magdalena Andersson attributed the rise in gun violence to the influx of immigrants who were not properly assimilated into the mainstream. WATCH | WION decodes the future of Ukraine-Russia war × "Sweden has failed to integrate the vast numbers of immigrants it has taken in over the past two decades, leading to parallel societies and gang violence," said Andersson, before adding, "Society has been too weak, resources for the police and social services have been too weak." Last year's Quran burnings and subsequent riots resulted in some of the most ugly pictures to have come out of Sweden in recent years. Experts are of the view that the illicit trade of contraband arms and ammunition from Ukraine could further the divide in the country. Finland took one step closer to becoming a member of NATO as the country’s parliament kicked off a debate aimed at accelerating the bid to join the military alliance.

Finland lawmakers will debate a bill in this regard on Tuesday, when NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will meet with Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President Sauli Niinisto.

A vote on the bill will then take place on Wednesday, and is expected to sail through without much opposition, as the initial membership bid in May was backed by 188 of the 200 members in parliament.

Once the bill is approved by the parliament, it will be sent to the president, whose signature is required to formalise the bidding process.

After the president has signed the law, Finland will submit the instruments of accession to Washington.

Many MPs have been looking to push through the legislation for the NATO membership bid expeditiously before Finland goes into polls on April 2.

A serial hacker suspected of stealing tens of thousands of psychotherapy patient records was extradited to Finland on Saturday (February 25), after he was arrested in France. Twenty-five-year-old Julius Kivimaki was arrested in Paris on February 3, on the run from a European arrest warrant issued by the Finnish Police in October last year, the news agency AFP reported. Last week, French authorities had given the green light for Kivimaki's extradition.

Kivimaki's lawyer Peter Jaari told AFP that the hacker was now being held in Vantaa prison near Helsinki. Meanwhile, Marko Leponen of the National Bureau of Investigation, who is heading the probe said the aim was to interview Kivimaki as soon as possible.

The probe is related to the 2018 and 2019 hacking of the Finnish company Vastaamo, which manages dozens of psychotherapy centres across Finland. AFP reported that in the cyberattack, confidential treatment records of psychotherapy patients in Finland were stolen and some leaked online.

Many patients reported receiving emails with a demand for $236 (200 euros) in bitcoin to prevent the contents of their discussions with therapists from being made public. The Finnish police estimated that there were over 30,000 victims whose data was leaked.

After the leak was made public in October 2020, the government announced a crisis meeting over the unprecedented data breach, as distressed psychotherapy patients flooded mental health charities.

Julius Kivimaki has already been convicted of various counts of cybercrime, fraud, and money laundering. He was a member of a cybercriminal group called the Lizard Squad.

According to a report by cybernews earlier this month, the Lizard Squad was most active in 2014 and was connected with DDoS attacks on PlayStation and Xbox online gaming services. The group was also connected with a bomb threat against an aircraft carrying then Sony Online Entertainment’s President John Smedley.

Türkiye sways towards Finland in its NATO membership bid, but says 'Sweden will be shocked'

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish president, has hinted that Ankara may let Finland join NATO before moving further with Sweden's NATO membership. Erdogan made his remarks just days after Ankara halted negotiations with the two nations to join NATO following a demonstration in Stockholm when a far-right politician set a copy of the Quran on fire.

Finland's NATO membership: Turkiye likely to approve the country's application

Turkiye strongly condemned the burning of Quran and summoned the Danish ambassador to the Turkish Foreign Ministry as it accused Denmark of endorsing a “hate crime” after Rasmus Paludan, a right-wing activist burned copies of the Muslim holy book on Friday (January 27).
This comes after a week the leader of the Danish right-wing political party Stram Kurs or Hard Line who also holds citizenship of Sweden, staged a Quran-burning protest in Sweden.

As per media reports, Paludan, on Friday, burned copies of the Quran near a Copenhagen mosque and outside the Turkish embassy in Denmark. He did something similar on January 21 outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm, Sweden which drew widespread condemnation and triggered counter-protests in Turkiye. Additionally, he vowed to do so every Friday until Sweden is admitted into NATO which requires Ankara’s approval.

Turkiye has previously blocked Sweden and neighbouring Finland’s bid to join the military alliance that the two countries have sought following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, the membership requires approval from all NATO members, including Ankara, which has indicated that it would block Sweden’s bid partially after Paludan’s stunt in Stockholm last week.

The protests in Sweden also led to counter-protests in Istanbul where at least 200 people gathered outside the Swedish consulate in the city and burned Sweden’s flag in response to Paludan’s burning of the Quran.

In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry called the Danish politician an “Islamophobic charlatan” and said, “Showing tolerance towards such heinous acts that offend the sensitivities of millions of people living in Europe threatens the practice of peaceful coexistence and provokes racist, xenophobic and anti-Muslim attacks,” reported Al Jazeera.

Additionally, according to Ankara’s state-run Anadolu Agency, the Danish ambassador was summoned to the Turkish foreign ministry where officials “strongly condemned the permission given for this provocative act which clearly constitutes a hate crime”. The media report also said that the ambassador was also told that “Denmark’s attitude is unacceptable”, as Turkiye expected the permission to be revoked.

According to a report by the Associated Press, Paludan was seen with a protective helmet and surrounded by riot police during the recent protest in Copenhagen which he live-streamed on Facebook and said, “This mosque has no place in Denmark”. Subsequently, Paludan was driven away in a police car.

'Guarantee security': Finland tells Russia after incident at embassy in Moscow

Finland's Employment Minister Tuula Haatainen, who was on an India visit last week, has said that her country would like to have more Indian talent and has reduced permit time for faster movement of people. Speaking exclusively to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Minister Haatainen said, "It is very important we exchange talent and people from India can come to Finland to live normal life, find jobs."

During the India visit, the minister had a meeting with the Minister of state for external affairs V. Muraleedharan as both sides signed a joint declaration of intent on migration and mobility. Pact on mobility, once signed, will help in easier movement of people, especially from India to Finland. India has been keen on signing mobility pact with a number of countries for easier movement of people, the last such pact was signed with Germany earlier this month.

According to Indian government estimates, around 15,469 persons of Indian origin (7231 NRIs and 8232 OCIs) live in Finland. Most live in the capital Helsinki and surrounding regions. In recent years, Indian professionals are being employed in high-tech companies. About 1200 Indian students are pursuing higher education. About half are pursuing master's degrees and the other are in doctorate programmes.

WION: What is the key focus for you during your India visit?

Tuula Haatainen: Key focus is to cooperate with India, because in Finland we need talent, and we see India as a very important partner country and the meaning of this visit was also to meet Indian ministers. I had the opportunity to meet with them and understood that we have a common view on the issue. It is very important we exchange talent and people from India can come to Finland to live normal life, find jobs.

WION: You signed a pact on intent on mobility, what is the key focus of the pact?

Tuula Haatainen: Key focus is to now enhance the mobility of the talent. It is very important that now on the government level we have signed this intent, this declaration of intent and now we are hoping to continue the cooperation.

WION: You are willing to welcome Indians, and in which sector

Tuula Haatainen: Especially in IT, technology, skilled people. On the whole, the technology sector is very important. It is estimated that we need 130,000 professionals at different levels in the technology sector and IT is very important, because Finland is a very advanced country in digitalisation. Then we need health care sector people, we need nurses. This is an issue I have been talking about with my Indian counterpart.

WION: How do Finland and India plan to increase people to people movement and trade..

Tuula Haatainen: We are now focusing on making ways to come to Finland faster, so we shortened the permit process. Now specialists and startups and their families can get permits in two weeks. As a whole, permit processes will be shortened for the others for one month. We also focusing on how people get integrated in the Finnish society. For example, spouse programme, so that if a couple is coming to Finland the family can get job.

A recent study published in the journal, Marriage and Family Review, outlines some of the main reasons that people choose to postpone or renounce childbearing in Finland. This includes the idea of a correlation between time spent online and people’s wish to have children.

The study examined some of the reasons given by people to postpone childbearing during the fertility decline in Finland in the 2010s, said the paper. Therefore, the data used for this research is from the two recent Finnish Family Barometers in 2015 and 2018. The representative survey was conducted by Väestöliitto, the Family Federation of Finland, said the reports.

Using this data, the paper titled “Reasons to Postpone Childbearing during Fertility Decline in Finland,” tried to explain the sharp decline in the birth rate in Finland. The study analysed the data collected from at least 3,468 people who were aged between 20-44.

The participants were asked about their desire to have children, half of whom said that they did not want or no longer want to have children. On the other hand, 36.6% of people have postponed their plans to have kids. While 13.4% said that they don’t know whether they plan to have children or more children.

The study showed three main groups of reasons why people deferred or decided not to have children, including uncertain lifestyle situations, lifestyle preferences and completed fertility, indicated one of the authors of the study, Kateryna Savelieva of the University of Helsinki, Finland.

“Uncertain life situations emerged as the strongest factor behind the decision to postpone or not to have children,” said the paper, which comprised of many uncertainties ranging from the financial situation, own or spouse’s unfinished education to the size of the apartment and so on.

The second reason most people reportedly gave was that they preferred to stick to their current lifestyle which led them to postpone their decision to have children or not have children. Lastly, the third reason was completed fertility which indicated that people have already completed their childbearing goals.

According to the study, there was a correlation between people who cited their desire to not change their lifestyle and those who were concerned about insecurity in their situation being the ones that use social media the most and are more inclined towards their work.

Overall, participants that have a stable lifestyle, are infrequent social media users, and are less work-oriented were less likely to report uncertainties toward childbearing. On the other hand, participants, particularly women with no children, who use social media frequently and are more work-oriented were the ones that listed lifestyle preferences as the reason for postponing having children or having more children, said the report. Additionally, factors like financial crisis and unemployment also have an impact on the fertility rate, says the study.

This study also shows the first systematic analysis of reasons with which adults have explained their decision to postpone or renounce childbearing in Finland during the 2010s fertility decline, said a media report. Notably, the data was collected prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, therefore, does not account for how these attitudes may have changed in recent times of crisis.

Erdogan renews threat to block Swedish, Finnish NATO bids

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday trained guns on Sweden and Finland once again regarding NATO membership and said Ankara continues to maintain its principle position.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday trained guns on Sweden and Finland once again regarding NATO membership and said Ankara continues to maintain its principle position. Erdogan threatened that he may not ratify the NATO membership bids of the two Nordic nations until the promises given to Ankara were met. "Until the promises made to our country are kept, we will maintain our principled position," said Erdogan in the country's parliament. "We are closely following whether the promises made by Sweden and Finland are kept or not, and of course, the final decision will be up to our great parliament," he added in the speech. Erdogan continues to denounce Finland and Sweden for providing a safe haven to Kurdish 'terrorists'. The Turkish leader is also cross with the Nordic countries for imposing an arms embargo on Ankara after Turkey's intervention in the Syrian conflict in 2019. However, in June, the three countries struck a deal where Turkey said it will seek extradition of 33 suspects from Finland and Sweden, in lieu of ratifying their NATO signing documents. Read more: NATO bid: Turkey strikes deal with Finland, Sweden over Kurdish militants However, Erdogan's statement on Saturday suggests that both Sweden and Finland had failed to make do on their promises. Both Nordic countries had sped up their process to join the nuclear-armed alliance after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, earlier this year. As reported by WION, Sweden and Finland need NATO allies to sign the ratification to complete the formal joining process. The accession will only be complete after all 30 NATO allies have signed the form. So far, 28 out of 30 countries have signed the document. Only Turkey and Hungary are yet to put pen to paper. Read more: Joe Biden signs documents supporting Sweden and Finland's bid to join NATO Prior to the invasion, Putin had repeatedly warned that the expansion of NATO threatens Russia and contravenes assurances given to it as the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. “We don’t have problems with Sweden and Finland like we do with Ukraine. If Finland and Sweden wish to, they can join. That’s up to them. They can join whatever they want,” said Putin. However, the Russian President warned that "if military contingents and military infrastructure were deployed there, we would be obliged to respond symmetrically and raise the same threats for those territories where threats have arisen for us”. Most of us know him for his movies but Brad Pitt can now add creating a sculpture to his list of achievements after publicly debuting his first works of art in a lakeside museum in Finland. Priyanka Sharma tells you more.

WION Fineprint | Brad Pitt makes his debut as a sculptor in Finland exhibition

In the actor's first-ever public art exhibition, Brad Pitt has unveiled his sculptures in a lakeside art museum in Finland, the gallery said on Monday.

Located in Finland's third largest city of Tampere, this is the first time the "largely self-taught" American star presented his sculptures to the public, Sara Hilden Art Museum said.

Pitt's sculptures were revealed by the actor himself on Saturday as part of a larger exhibition by British artist Thomas Houseago, alongside a ceramic series by Australian alternative rocker Nick Cave.

"For Nick and I this is a new world and our first entry. It just feels right," Pitt told Finnish broadcaster Yle at the opening ceremony.

Pitt's work includes a moulded plaster panel "depicting a gunfight" and a series of house-shaped silicone sculptures that each have been shot with a different gauge of ammunition.
"To me it's about self-reflection. It's about where I have gotten it wrong in my relationships, where have I misstepped," Pitt said at the opening.

The 58-year-old actor's unexpected visit took the Nordic country by surprise as his involvement in the exhibition was not previously announced.

"In that sense this is exciting and wonderful," Chief Curator Sarianne Soikkonen told AFP.

As well as hosting Pitt's sculptures for the first time, the art show is Houseago's exhibition debut in the Nordic countries.

The decision to include his friends Cave and Pitt in his exhibition was shaped by the pandemic and "events in Houseago's personal life", Soikkonen said.
