<p>Irish writer Paul Lynch has won the 2023 Booker Prize for his dystopian novel <em>Prophet Song</em>. The winning entry, which will get&nbsp;$63,000,&nbsp;is Lynch's fifth novel.</p>

<p>Terming it a soul-shattering work which the readers will not forget, the jury said it was a triumph of "emotional storytelling".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The novel, set in Ireland, imagines the country descending into fascism and tells the story of a family struggling to come to terms with a terrifying new world order where democracy remains a distant memory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The novel's protagonist is&nbsp;Eilish Stack, a mother of four&nbsp;who answers her front door on a wet evening in Dublin&nbsp;to find the GNSB on her doorstep. Two officers from Ireland’s newly formed secret police want to speak with her husband.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Edi&nbsp;Edugyan, the chair of this year’s judging panel for the Booker Prize, Lynch's novel&nbsp;“captures the social and political anxieties of our current moment. Readers will find it soul-shattering and true, and will not soon forget its warnings".&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the fascinating aspects of the novel is that there are no paragraph breaks and quotation marks - which evokes a sense of claustrophobia in the readers, making it all the more visceral.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Inspired by real political events: Lynch</strong></h2>

<p>After winning the prize, Lynch quipped:&nbsp;“Well, there goes my hard-won anonymity."</p>

<p>Lynch spent nearly four years writing <em>Prophet Song</em> and took inspiration from world events&nbsp;including Brexit and the rise of nationalism in Europe.</p>

<p>"This was not an easy book to write.&nbsp;The rational part of me believed I was dooming my career by writing this novel. Though I had to write the book anyway. We do not have a choice in such matters," he added.</p>

<p>However, Lynch maintains that he did not intend to&nbsp;write a political novel or a straightforwardly “speculative” one.</p>

<p>“How can such a novel be speculative when what is happening on these pages belongs to the here and now?” he wrote in a recent article for the <em>Guardian</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I wanted to explore the nature of force, problems of choice and free will, and to pose questions about human dignity. The framing of the questions proved more important than the answers."</p>

<p>The Booker is open to works of fiction by writers of any nationality, written in English and published in the UK or Ireland between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023.</p>

<p>Anime and Manga are synonymous to Japan and that fixation has gone to a whole new level. 38-year-old Akihiko Kondo, who unofficially married fictional character Hatsune Miku in 2018, now, seems to be going through a turbulent phase.</p>

<p>This comes after a decade-long relationship with the computer-synthesized pop singer who had shared stage with Lady Gaga. Crediting his partner, Kondo said that she helped him pave his way out of depression.</p>

Indian author Arundhati Roy announces second novel after 19-year gap

Judges for top British literary award the Man Booker Prize spurned big-name novelists in favour of experimental new talent as they announced their shortlist in London Tuesday.<br />

None of the six writers who made the cut for the coveted prize for fiction is well known outside literary circles.<br />

Those who failed to make the shortlist included Nobel Prize winner JM Coetzee, with &quot;The Schooldays of Jesus&quot;.<br />

The panel of judges told a press conference they wanted to reward creative pioneers.<br />

&quot;Being innovative, being bold, courageous, a willingness to take risks, being novel within the novel - that&#39;s what really excited us because it shows that the art form isn&#39;t being nostalgic,&quot; said Amanda Foreman, chair of the judges.<br />

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have made Graeme Macrae Burnet favourite to win with &quot;His Bloody Project&quot; at odds of 5/2.<br />

The novel tells the story of a memoir written in prison in 1869 by a triple murderer. The manuscript is discovered by one of his descendants, who shares the author&#39;s name. He then edits and publishes the work himself.<br />

Previous winners of the prize include Hilary Mantel for &quot;Wolf Hall&quot;, Salman Rushdie for &quot;Midnight&#39;s Children&quot; and Michael Ondaatje for &quot;The English Patient&quot;.<br />

One of the judges was actress Olivia Williams, who read many of the books between rehearsals and performances at London&#39;s National Theatre.<br />

She described &quot;The Sellout&quot; as &quot;shocking and unexpectedly funny&quot; and compared it to the work 18th-century satirist Jonathan Swift, author of &quot;Gulliver&#39;s Travels.&quot;<br />

Another was &quot;All That Man Is&quot; by Canadian-British author David Szalay, which judge Jon Day said was about &quot;masculinity and the state of contemporary Europe -- a post-Brexit novel for our times&quot;.<br />

Judges for top British literary award the Man Booker Prize spurned big-name novelists in favour of experimental new talent as they announced their shortlist in London Tuesday. None of the six writers who made the cut for the coveted prize for fiction is well known outside literary circles. Those who failed to make the shortlist included Nobel Prize winner JM Coetzee, with "The Schooldays of Jesus". The panel of judges told a press conference they wanted to reward creative pioneers. "Being innovative, being bold, courageous, a willingness to take risks, being novel within the novel - that's what really excited us because it shows that the art form isn't being nostalgic," said Amanda Foreman, chair of the judges. Bookmakers Ladbrokes have made Graeme Macrae Burnet favourite to win with "His Bloody Project" at odds of 5/2. The novel tells the story of a memoir written in prison in 1869 by a triple murderer. The manuscript is discovered by one of his descendants, who shares the author's name. He then edits and publishes the work himself. Previous winners of the prize include Hilary Mantel for "Wolf Hall", Salman Rushdie for "Midnight's Children" and Michael Ondaatje for "The English Patient". The winner will be announced in London on October 25. Gritty subjects Other shortlisted novels include US author Paul Beatty's "The Sellout", a satirical novel set in a fictional Los Angeles neighbourhood which explores racial equality and the civil rights movement. She described "The Sellout" as "shocking and unexpectedly funny" and compared it to the work 18th-century satirist Jonathan Swift, author of "Gulliver's Travels." Another was "All That Man Is" by Canadian-British author David Szalay, which judge Jon Day said was about "masculinity and the state of contemporary Europe -- a post-Brexit novel for our times".
