With Russia’s conflict with Ukraine deepening with every hour, the United States (US), European Union (EU) and United Kingdom (UK) have decided to put crippling sanctions on the financial sector in Russia.

The measures taken to put Russia on back foot include a block on its access to the global financial system, SWIFT, and, for the first time, restrictions on its central bank.

On Saturday, the measures were announced jointly to "hold Russia to account and collectively ensure that this war is a strategic failure for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin."

This is a part of a new round of financial sanctions.

The key Russian banks are being cut out of the SWIFT financial messaging system. While the restrictions over central bank look to target over USD 600 billion in reserves that the Kremlin has at its disposal. It is meant to limit ability of Russia to support the ruble as sanctions by the West intensify.

These steps were framed to send the ruble into "free fall" and promote soaring inflation in the Russian economy, the US officials said.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, while announcing the measures in Brussels, said would push the bloc also to "paralyse the assets of Russia's Central bank" so that its transactions would be frozen. Cutting several commercial banks from SWIFT "will ensure that these banks are disconnected from the international financial system and harm their ability to operate globally," she added.

"Cutting banks off will stop them from conducting most of their financial transactions worldwide and effectively block Russian exports and imports. Putin embarked on a path aiming to destroy Ukraine, but what he is also doing, in fact, is destroying the future of his own country," she added.

Ukraine conflict: US, EU, UK sanction Russian President Vladimir Putin, top officials

NATO has ordered military commanders to intensify preparations to defend allied territory putting hundreds of warplanes and ships on alert and at the same time agreeing to increase troop numbers on its eastern flank.

EU Chief: Stability of Europe is at stake

France's finance minister Bruno Le Maire on Friday said that the European Union (EU) wants to cut all links between Russia and the global financial system. During a meeting of European finance ministers, he said that the EU "wants to cut all the links between Russia and the global financial system."

"We want to isolate Russia financially... We want to dry up the financing," he further added.

While discussing sanctions, Le Maire said that Moscow was "an economic partner of secondary importance" for France.

However, he added that Paris would protect households from a surge in energy prices due to the confrontation, which happens to be a key concern because Europe buys most of its natural gas supplies from Russia.

Le Maire's German counterpart Christian Lindner noted "in one-off cases payments (to Russia) remain possible, for example to pay for gas deliveries".

"We already have a complete blockade of Russian banks," Lindner said. "Business dealings with Russia are as good as stopped. Further steps are possible but their consequences must be weighed, the idea is to inflict consequences on the Russian economy" and not to cause harm to Europe.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his country had been left on its own to fight Russia following the Kremlin's large-scale invasion which killed 130 Ukrainians on the first day.

"We have been left alone to defend our state," Zelenisky declared in a video address to the nation made at the end of the first day of the Russian attack.

"Who is ready to fight alongside us? I don't see anyone. Who is ready to give Ukraine a guarantee of NATO membership? Everyone is afraid," he added.

“Sadly, today we lost 137 heroes, our citizens. Ten of them were officers. 316 people have been wounded. Defending the Zmiinyi Island, all our border guards died a heroic death. But they have not surrendered. They will all be awarded posthumously the title of the Hero of Ukraine. Let those who gave their lives for Ukraine be remembered forever.”

Ukraine invasion: EU wants to cut all connections between Russia and global financial system

'Coordinated actions announced by the European Union, NATO allies and partners sends a strong message of unity and it demonstrates how alone and isolated Russia is. I will convene a virtual NATO summit tomorrow to address the consequences of Russia's actions,' says Jens Stoltenberg Secretary General of NATO.

Foreign ministers from Indo-Pacific nations attended a Paris conference Tuesday aimed at bringing the region, an important partner for trade and exports, squarely into Europe's focus in a rapidly changing world with rising security challenges.

New Zealand, India, South Korea, Japan and a clutch of other Asian nations were represented at the forum. China was not invited.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian stressed that China was not being slighted, and EU Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell noted the long-standing "dedicated dialogue" between the EU and China.

"The Indo-Pacific strategy ... Is not an anti-China strategy. This strategy is not against anyone," Le Drian said at a closing news conference. "It is a strategy for partnership development between the Indo-Pacific and the European Union."

Le Drian listed "concrete projects" that he said were planned or underway, from tackling climate change to health, but also security concerns.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called the region an "aorta" for Europe with 40 per cent of the EU's trade passing through the region's waters.

"That's why we need freedom of navigation ... A security architecture that we have to build together," Borrell said.

He announced a just-launched coordinated maritime presence with the region's navies.

It is "not a military alliance, not against anyone. It's a way of enhancing our presence and coordinating our means among the member states in order to be more able to act," he said, without further elaboration.

Le Drian acknowledged concern over an emerging alliance between Russia and China "which is clearly defying the multilateral order."

"And that was another reason for us to engage more in the Indo-Pacific,? the French minister said.

US, EU set to impose sanctions on Russia after Putin orders troops into two rebel regions of Ukraine

The European Union on Monday imposed sanctions on several top officials in Myanmar and on a lucrative state-owned oil and gas company that has helped fund the military that overthrew the country's elected government a year ago.

The bloc imposed asset freezes and travel bans on 22 people and slapped restrictive measures on four entities, including state-owned and private companies.

Among those sanctioned was the state-owned Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), which is a joint venture partner in all offshore gas projects in Myanmar, including the Yadana gas field with Total Energies and Chevron.

Last month, Total and Chevron said they were exiting Myanmar amid rampant human rights abuses committed by the military.

The sanctions on MOGE come after a long campaign by human rights groups within Myanmar and around the world, who argued that sanctioning MOGE would cut off a significant source of the military's funds.

About 50% of Myanmar's foreign currency comes from natural gas revenues, with MOGE expected to earn $1.5 billion from offshore and pipeline projects in 2021-2022, according to a Myanmar government forecast.

Prior rounds of U.S. And European sanctions against the Myanmar military have excluded oil and gas. The Yadana field supplies gas to Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand.

EU headquarters said in a statement that the bloc is deeply concerned by the continuing escalation of violence in Myanmar and the evolution towards a protracted conflict with regional implications. Since the military coup, the situation has continuously and gravely deteriorated.

John Sifton, Asia advocacy director of Human Rights Watch, applauded the EU's decision, noting that the sanctions against MOGE were particularly important given how crucial the company's revenues are to the military.

It is vital, however, that the European Union enforce these measures effectively, and that energy companies now withdrawing from Myanmar do so in a way that doesn't further benefit the junta, Sifton said in a statement.

The European Union must implement these measures in ways that ensure that energy companies' shares in oil and gas operations are not simply transferred or relinquished to junta-controlled entities an outcome that would only enrich the junta further.

Widespread nonviolent protests in Myanmar followed a Feb. 1, 2021, military takeover that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The official said Brussels was waiting for the results of Scholz's visit to the Kremlin and an emergency summit was "possible" if needed when EU leaders gather in Brussels Thursday for the Africa meeting.

The EU -- alongside other Western allies -- has vowed to impose massive sanctions on Moscow if it stages a further incursion into Ukraine.
Officials in Brussels have come up with a raft of options for the sanctions but the leaders of the 27 member states would need to sign off on them.
