Ocean temperatures reached a record high last month with average global sea surface temperature touching 21.06 degrees Celsius (69.91 degrees Fahrenheit), said the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) on Thursday (March 7).

The average sea surface temperature in February exceeded the previous record of 20.98 C (69.77 F), which was set in August 2023, in a dataset spanning back to 1979.

This comes during what is dubbed as the hottest February on record.

Marine scientists issued a warning this week saying that a fourth global mass coral bleaching event will likely take place in the Southern Hemisphere, driven by warming waters, which could be the worst that the world has ever witnessed.

Under severe heat stress, corals bleach, driving out the beneficial, colourful algae that reside in their tissues, leaving behind a pale skeleton. They become susceptible to hunger and illness as a result, and many of them die.

Fragile reef ecosystems may collapse as a result, leaving coasts vulnerable to erosion, storms, and overfishing.

The scientists say that an El Nino climate pattern, which is borne out of warmer-than-normal surface waters in the Eastern Pacific, alongside human-caused climate change is the one fueling the extra heat.

"What is more surprising is that sea surface temperatures are at record levels over regions far away from the centre of the El Nino action, such as the tropical Atlantic and Indian Ocean," said climate scientist Richard Allan of the University of Reading.

He stated that this demonstrated the significant impact of increasing greenhouse gas emissions on the atmosphere.

The polar oceans are not included in the global average sea surface temperature data, however, the conditions there are dire too.

In February, Antarctic sea ice hit its yearly minimum extent, registering its third-lowest extent on record at 28 per cent below average.

C3S said that El Nino was now weakening in the equatorial Pacific, however, air temperatures over the oceans remain at an unusually high level.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday won the backing of the EU's leading political group, the centre-right European People's Party, to head the bloc's powerful executive for another five years.

The only candidate in the party's ballot, von der Leyen listed the war in Ukraine, the crisis in Gaza destabilising the Middle East, and the rise of China as key challenges for the 27-nation European Union, a wealthy grouping of 450 million people.

"And here at home, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's friends are trying to rewrite our history and hijack our future. They are spreading hate from behind their keyboards," she told a party caucus in Bucharest.

"Our peaceful and united Europe is being challenged like never before by populists, by nationalists, by demagogues."

Von der Leyen won with 400 votes in favour and 89 against, an EPP official said, as U2 song "Beautiful Day" blasted from the speakers.

The backing comes ahead of an EU-wide parliamentary election in June that will lead to the appointment of a new slate of top EU officials - including the head of the Brussels-based Commission.

Currently seen as a clear favourite to lead the Commission again, von der Leyen would begin a new term as Europe looks to strengthen its security and defence while Russia wages war on its borders and Donald Trump eyes a return to the White House.

If approved by leaders of the EU's 27 member countries, she will have another term charting the bloc's policies on everything from big tech and state aid to Chinese investment screening and sanctions against Russia.

She vowed to advance EU economies, clamp down on smugglers driving irregular immigration to the bloc, strengthen competitiveness and businesses, as well as supporting farmers as costs of living rise.

Von der Leyen also promised more financial and military aid to Ukraine, which has been fighting against Russian invasion for more than two years.

"Prosperity, security, democracy - this is what people care about in these difficult times," she said. "In times of change, Europe has your back."

Von Der Leyen

Born in Belgium where her father worked at the same European Commission she now leads, von der Leyen is a physician and a mother of seven. A former German defence minister, she steered the EU through the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and an energy crunch.

The first woman ever to hold the influential job, she saw Britain leave the EU, put into law more ambitious climate goals, and oversaw massive new spending on energy, health and post-pandemic economic recovery.

Known for honing decisions among a tiny group of her closest aides, von der Leyen drew criticism for visiting Israel after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack without clearly demanding that the country respects international humanitarian law in its response.

Despite a rise in far-right and populist parties in the bloc, the EPP has kept a clear lead among other political groups ahead of the June vote, according to opinion polls.

Still, securing the necessary majority in the new European Parliament, where eurosceptics are set to win more seats, might be the biggest hurdle for von der Leyen to clear, possibly forcing her into policy trade-offs to win the votes needed.

EU negotiators on Monday (March 4) reached an agreement to ban the use of single-use plastics in cafes and restaurants, starting in 2030. This decision was taken as part of new regulations aimed at reducing packaging waste across the bloc.

The single-use plastic ban

The European Union's 27 nations and lawmakers have agreed on a draft text which includes a target to reduce packaging waste by five per cent by 2030 compared to 2018 levels. This reduction will further be increased to 10 per cent by 2035 and 15 per cent by 2040.

Unprocessed fresh fruits and vegetables, individual servings of condiments and sugar, as well as miniature toiletries and shrink-wrap used for suitcases in airports will also fall under the ban on single-use plastic packaging. Additionally, ultra-lightweight plastic bags will also be banned, with some exceptions.

Consumers should also have the option to use their own containers, said the EU parliament.

Additionally, lawmakers included a provision to ban "forever chemicals" in food packaging that come into contact with food to prevent adverse health effects, including various types of cancer.

EU negotiators on Monday (March 4) reached an agreement to ban the use of single-use plastics in cafes and restaurants, starting in 2030. This decision was taken as part of new regulations aimed at reducing packaging waste across the bloc. The single-use plastic ban The European Union's 27 nations and lawmakers have agreed on a draft text which includes a target to reduce packaging waste by five per cent by 2030 compared to 2018 levels. Also read | These Earth critters may be colonising the moon, all thanks to a 2019 crash. Consumers should also have the option to use their own containers, said the EU parliament. Additionally, lawmakers included a provision to ban "forever chemicals" in food packaging that come into contact with food to prevent adverse health effects, including various types of cancer. The European Union has put forth an expansive proposal for a substantial increase in defence capabilities as the conflict in Ukraine persists.

EU officials revealed plans on Tuesday to enhance weapons production and procurement within the bloc, aiming to reduce dependence on US arms and respond to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager emphasised the need for the EU to take greater responsibility for its security while maintaining commitment to the NATO alliance.

The European Defence Industrial Strategy, proposed by the commission, aims to incentivise European arms manufacturers to invest more, increase production agility and collectively catalog their available resources.

However, financing the ambitious initiative poses a challenge for a continent that has reduced defense investment for decades. EU internal market commissioner Thierry Breton has indicated a requirement of around 100 billion euros for the EU to compete with the Pentagon and US defence industry.

To kickstart the project, the commission plans to allocate 1.5 billion euros from the EU's current budget until 2027. This amount, although acknowledged as relatively modest, is seen as an incentive to support member states' increased funding over the coming years.

However, frugal countries such as Germany oppose this, expressing concerns about centralising budget power in Brussels and compromising national sovereignty over defence matters.

The impetus for this proposed defence industry strategy was Russia's invasion of Ukraine two years ago.

EU officials argue that the bloc now faces a new security paradigm with an assertive Russia operating under wartime economic conditions. The initiative aims to counter the return of high-intensity warfare on the EU's borders.

The European Union on Monday (March 4) hit iPhone maker Apple with an antitrust fine of over 1.8 billion euros ($1.95 billion) for preventing music streaming services like Spotify from informing users about payment options outside its App Store.

The European Commission said it "found that Apple applied restrictions on app developers preventing them from informing iOS users about alternative and cheaper music subscription services available outside of the app".

"This is illegal under EU antitrust rules," the EU's powerful antitrust regulator said.

"Apple's conduct, which lasted for almost ten years, may have led many iOS users to pay significantly higher prices for music streaming subscriptions because of the high commission fee imposed by Apple on developers and passed on to consumers," it further added.

Swedish music streaming service Spotify lodged a complaint in the year 2019 which triggered a broad commission probe into the firm in 2021. However, Brussels narrowed its investigation last year to focus more on Apple's actions of barring applications from providing users with information about rival music subscription options.

"For a decade, Apple abused its dominant position in the market for the distribution of music streaming apps through the App Store," Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

"We have ordered Apple to remove the necessary provisions and to refrain from similar practices in the future," Vestager told reporters.

Meta platform is facing privacy complaints by eight EU consumer groups, the consumer bodies from conutries that include France and Denmark have accused the Facebook owner of violating privacy rules.

EU consumers file data privacy complaints against Meta

Consumer organisations from various EU nations have lodged formal complaints against Meta, alleging that the tech giant is unlawfully handling user data and employing its "pay or consent" mechanism to mask privacy violations. Complaints have been filed by consumer groups from the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, and Spain, media reports said.

Meta, previously known as Facebook, has faced criticism for its alleged lucrative practice of selling user data to advertisers. This has sparked confrontations with EU authorities regarding data privacy regulations.

Meta, last year in November, introduced a "pay or consent" system enabling users to abstain from data utilisation for targeted advertising by paying a monthly fee.

However, privacy advocates have raised concerns over its legality.

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) labeled Meta's system "a smokescreen to obscure the real problem of massive, illegal data processing of users which goes on regardless of what users choose."

BEUC's Deputy Director General, Ursula Pachl, emphasised the need for data protection and authorities to intervene, stating, "It's time for data protection authorities to stop Meta's unfair data processing and its infringing of people's fundamental rights."

"The risks of war should not be overblown, but they should be prepared for and that starts with the urgent need to rebuild, replenish, modernise member states' armed forces," she said.

Your electric vehicles (EVs) could soon be powered by woodchips. A company in New Zealand is turning discarded woodchips into a more sustainable version of synthetic graphite also known as biographite. The alternative would also help break China’s dominance on a key ingredient in EV batteries.

What is biographite?

CarbonScape, a New Zealand-based company, is collecting woodchips from across the world to turn into a form of synthetic graphite which, according to CEO Ivan Williams, is not only more planet-friendly but also as pure as synthetic graphite made from fossil fuels.

Notably, synthetic graphite, used in batteries to power EVs, is mostly produced in China. Therefore, CarbonScape can help provide an alternative to reduce the West’s reliance on Beijing for critical minerals that power the energy transition, amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Biographite, according to the company, is made by heating the byproducts from the forestry industry, aka the woodchips, using a process called thermo-catalytic graphitisation. This process produces charcoal which is then catalysed and purified into graphite which can be used to power EVs.

“The production of ‘traditional’ synthetic graphite uses fossil fuel-based feedstocks, such as coal tar pitch and petroleum coke, and fossil fuel-powered processes,” said Williams, as quoted by Euronews.

He added, “Consequently, it emits 35 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions for each tonne of graphite it produces.” The mining of graphite can also adversely impact local communities, animals, and the environment.

According to Williams, their process can remove the equivalent of 2.7 tonnes of carbon emissions for every tonne that is used to make biographite. The material is reportedly being manufactured in the European Union and the United States.

The CarbonSpace CEO also noted that since biographite can be made close to battery factories it can further lessen carbon dioxide emissions by cutting the need to transport it. “Our mission is to decarbonize the battery industry,” Williams told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

China not only reportedly produces 60 per cent of the world’s natural graphite and nearly 70 per cent of synthetic graphite, but also mostly all the very pure graphite used in lithium-ion batteries, used to power EVs.

In 2023, CarbonScape secured $18 million in funding from Finnish-Swedish forestry firm Stora Enso and Hong Kong-based battery producer Amperex Technology, reported Euronews.

The funds, the firm said, would be used to finance the construction of commercial biographite plants in Europe and the US.

The European Parliament, on Tuesday (Feb 27) passed a landmark bill aimed at protecting nature in the 27-nation bloc after overcoming conservative attempts to dump the legislation and despite becoming a target of protesting farmers across the EU in recent weeks.

The vote took place a day after violent demonstrations erupted outside the European Union’s headquarters in Brussels, Belgium amid the ongoing weeks-long farmers’ protests across Europe.

Bill passed despite opposition

The farmers’ unions had urged members of the parliament to support the agricultural sector by rejecting the legislation which they say threatens their livelihoods.

The bill had also faced opposition at the last minute from the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest political grouping in the parliament which said that it would subject farmers to more red tape and bureaucracy.

Eventually, the EU lawmakers adopted a watered version of the legislation with 329 votes in favour, 275 against and 24 abstentions, on Tuesday. The European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevicius took to X and thanked those who voted in favour of the bill.

He also called the policy EU’s “concrete contribution to preserve biodiversity, precious ecosystems, healthy soils and waters – first and foremost, for our farmers.”

The nature law still requires final approval from EU member states before it comes into force. This process is typically a formality, but the same cannot be said for this particular legislation as recent EU policies have faced blocks and delays because of pushback in various European countries.

What is the law about?

The nature law is said to be one of the biggest environmental legislation in the EU. It requires 27 member states to introduce measures to restore at least 20 per cent of the bloc’s land and seas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050.

The legislation is aimed at reversing the decline of Europe’s natural habitats as 81 per cent of them have been classed as being in poor health.

In line with the law, member states will be required to restore at least 30 per cent of forests, grasslands, and wetlands, as well as rivers, lakes, and coral beds from poor to good condition by 2030.

The nature law will also target specific areas like the restoration of peatlands so they can absorb carbon dioxide.

Opposition against the law

The law has mainly been opposed by two groups – EPP and the protesting farmers.

In 2022, when the nature law was first proposed by the European Commission it faced fierce political backlash mostly from centre-right lawmakers who attempted to get rid of it completely.

In a bid to pass the legislation, sections of the nature law including a goal to introduce more trees, ponds and other biodiverse features to farmland were weakened.

Meanwhile, European farmers who have been protesting for weeks now raised concerns about the excessively restrictive environmental rules, as well as called on lawmakers to address issues like competition from cheap imports from outside the EU and low incomes.

Some 20 European leaders meet in Paris on Monday to send Russian President Vladimir Putin a message of European resolve on Ukraine and counter the Kremlin's narrative that Russia is bound to win a war now in its third year.

President Emmanuel Macron has invited his European counterparts to the Elysee Palace for a working meeting announced at short notice to discuss how to ramp up ammunition supplies to Ukraine amid what his advisers say is an escalation in Russian aggression over the past few weeks.

"We want to send Putin a very clear message, that he won't win in Ukraine," a presidential adviser told reporters in a briefing. "Our goal is to crush this idea he wants us to believe that he would be somehow winning."

After initial successes in pushing back the Russian army, Ukraine has suffered setbacks on eastern battlefields, with its generals complaining of shortages of arms and soldiers.

Officials say the meeting will not be an occasion to announce new weapon deliveries to Ukraine but more to brainstorm ways to be more efficient on the ground, as well as increase coordination between allies and Ukraine.

One area where there could be progress is on a Czech-led initiative to buy hundreds of thousands of ammunition rounds from third countries, something that France has been cautious about as it wants to prioritise the development of Europe's own industry.

"I am about to fly to Paris for a summit that Emmanuel Macron called and which follows up the initiative that I presented at the European Council at the beginning of February," Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on X before travelling to France.

"The goal is to collect enough money for ammunition that Ukraine needs."

Ammunition supplies have become a critical issue for Kyiv. The European Union, though, is falling short of its target of sending Ukraine a million rounds of artillery shells by March.

"We must be able to deliver more shells. The principle is that shells will be purchased where they are available," said the adviser. "There is no dogmatic (French) position."

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, British foreign minister David Cameron, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, as well as leaders from Scandinavian and Baltic countries, are among those attending.

The United States, which has been under much scrutiny as its latest military aid package for Ukraine has stalled in Congress, will be represented by Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Jim O'Brien.

French officials said the security conference in Munich earlier this month, which coincided with the death of Putin's most formidable domestic opponent, Alexei Navalny, was all about "doom and gloom", and that Macron, who is due in Kyiv in March, was keen to dispel that.

In March of the previous year, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court asserted that Russia had relocated "at least hundreds" of children from orphanages and care facilities in occupied Ukrainian regions, with "many" being put up for adoption. The ICC indicted officials, including President Vladimir Putin, for the abduction of Ukrainian children, classifying it as a war crime. Moscow denies any wrongdoing, contending that it has taken in children from the war zone to ensure their safety. Ukraine asserts that over 4,000 children have been taken by Russia.

The new measures also target the procurement network supporting Russia's military, particularly the supply chain involved in drone manufacturing. Twenty-seven companies, predominantly Russian, along with three mainland Chinese firms and one Hong Kong-based company, have been added to Annex IV, barring European firms from selling dual-use goods to them.

The command centre for these vessels will be based in the Greek city of Larissa and they would be ordered to fire on the Houthis only if they attack first and will not be authorised to shoot pre-emptively, an EU official told German Press Agency dpa.

This comes as the United States is already spearheading its own naval coalition in the region and has conducted retaliatory strikes on Houthis in recent weeks, along with the United Kingdom.

Recent Houthi attacks

As of Monday evening, Houthis said that they had targeted three vessels in the last 24 hours, including the British-registered Rubymar, the US-owned Sea Champion and the Navis Fortuna which they also described as “American”.

Houthi naval forces used missiles to target “two American ships in the Gulf of Aden. The first was ‘Sea Champion’ and the other was ‘Navis Fortuna,’” said the militant group in a statement.

UK-based maritime security firm Ambrey had earlier reported that a Greek-flagged, US-owned bulk carrier was attacked twice in two hours in the Gulf of Aden.

The bulk carrier reported a “missile attack” before another projectile hit the water just metres from the ship, said Ambrey. Meanwhile, the Royal Navy’s UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), said the ship’s master reported “evidence of shrapnel and damage to paintwork”.

The attack on “two American ships” claimed by Houthis also came a day after the militant group severely damaged a Belize-flagged Rubymar ship travelling through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, forcing the crew to abandon the vessel.

Houthi attacks affect Suez Canal revenue

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, on Monday, said that revenues from the Suez Canal had “decreased by 40 to 50 per cent” since this year due to the attacks by Houthis.

“See what is happening at our borders...with Gaza, you see the Suez Canal, which used to bring Egypt nearly $10 billion per year, (these revenues) have decreased by 40 to 50 per cent and Egypt must continue to pay companies and partners,” said the Egyptian president.

The Suez Canal raised around $8.6 billion for Egypt in the 2022-23 fiscal year and is a vital source of foreign currency in addition to tourism.

The United Nations, in late January, said that the overall number of ships passing through the Suez Canal had fallen 42 per cent in the previous two months.

EU launches Red Sea mission On Monday (Feb 19), European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the decision to deploy Naval Force Operation Aspides in a post on X. “Europe will ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, working alongside our international partners,” said von der Leyen. She added, “Beyond crisis response, it’s a step towards a stronger European presence at sea to protect our European interests.” The EU aims to have the mission named Aspides, Greek for “shield”, up and running in a “few weeks” with at least four vessels, an official said on Friday (Feb 16). EU launches Red Sea mission; Houthis claim to have targeted ‘two American ships’ in Gulf of Aden

Ursula von der Leyen announced Monday her bid for a second term as chief of the European Commission, vowing to defend the bloc from forces aiming to divide it.

The 65-year-old German former minister's candidacy comes at a time when the bloc is facing strong headwinds from the far-right, Russia's war against Ukraine is still raging, and with the spectre of Donald Trump returning to the White House rattling allies.

"We must defend against divisions from within and from outside. I am sure that we have the strength to do so, and that is the task that I have set for myself," von der Leyen said in Berlin, as she confirmed her candidacy following a meeting with her CDU party.

At the helm since 2019, von der Leyen has led the bloc's executive body as the EU traversed an extraordinary period of disruptions -- from Brexit to the coronavirus pandemic to Russia's invasion of its pro-EU neighbour.

Hendrik Wuest, a key figure in von der Leyen's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party in Germany, said five more years for her would be a much needed constant at a time of uncertainties.

"A second term would be a sign of stability, that is all the more needed at a time when our European values are being attacked from all sides," he told news site Politico.

Following Monday's nomination by the CDU, the broader alliance of conservatives across the bloc -- the European People's Party group to which the CDU belongs -- is expected to name her as its lead candidate for the post when it meets in Bucharest on March 6-7, EPP leader Manfred Weber has said.

Von der Leyen, a protégé of former German chancellor Angela Merkel who has served as minister on all four of her cabinets, is the first woman to lead the commission.

A second von der Leyen commission would likely find itself with a changed political landscape.

Voter surveys suggest extreme-right, anti-immigrant parties across Europe will grab more seats in European Parliament elections on June 6-9, pushing the legislature to the right.

That could slow progress towards the European Union green transition that von der Leyen had made a cornerstone of her first term. It could also grow the cohort of European lawmakers sympathetic to Trump should he regain the White House.

Firm on Ukraine support

EU lawmaker Daniel Caspary of the CDU said he expected her priorities to shift, with more concessions to Europe's farmers, though her support for Ukraine and for sanctions against Russia were likely to remain.

Underlining the crucial importance of standing firmly behind Kyiv, von der Leyen told the Munich Security Conference over the weekend that it was "much more than a question of Russia-Ukraine.

"It's a question of whether democracies globally prevail, and are we able to defend and protect our values. And the answer has to be yes," she stressed.

Alluding to a possible return by Trump, who has rattled NATO allies by threatening to abandon those who fail to meet their defence spending commitments, von der Leyen also voiced the importance of building a "strong Europe".

The bloc has to boost its defence resources -- improving spending on defence production and ensuring that the manufacturing is done in Europe so that billions in taxpayers' funds are channelled to companies that are creating jobs on the continent, she said.

Von der Leyen also outlined plans to "install a commissioner for defence" if she won a new term.

"And where he or she is coming from -- this is open but of course I think it's very important for the central and eastern European countries to have good portfolios and this is a good portfolio," she said.

According to sources familiar with the matter the fine is the culmination of a lengthy antitrust investigation probing allegations that Apple violated EU laws by allegedly leveraging its platform to prioritise its music streaming services over competitors.

The investigation, initiated following a formal complaint by music-streaming giant Spotify in 2019, scrutinised whether Apple obstructed apps from informing iPhone users about potentially cheaper alternatives for accessing music subscriptions outside of its App Store ecosystem.

The European Commission is expected to announce its findings early next month, asserting that Apple's actions contravene EU competition regulations designed to foster fair market competition.

"This fine sends a clear message that the EU will not tolerate anti-competitive practices, particularly from dominant players in the market," FT quoted a spokesperson from the European Commission as saying.

According to insiders, Brussels will charge Apple of exploiting its dominant market position and enforcing unfair trading conditions on its rivals.

The impending fine is anticipated to be one of the most substantial penalties imposed by the EU on major tech firms, rivalling the hefty fines previously levied against Google, which are currently under legal scrutiny.
