The announcement was made by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Sunday after a meeting of the party’s core committee in Lahore. In a presser, PTI lawmaker Shah Mahmood Qureshi said: “There was a long discussion and debate, and the party decided that it would participate in the by-polls for the 33 seats.”

Imran Khan will be the main candidate for all the 33 NA seats and as far as the legislators who were elected to those seats earlier, Qureshi said they will file their nominations as "covering candidates." “So we have decided to take part in the polls,” he said.

Candidates running for the vacant National Assembly seats will be able to file their nominations papers from February 6 to 8. The list of the nominated candidates will be out the next day. Nomination papers will be validated till 13 February and an updated list will be issued on 21 February.&nbsp;

If anyone would want to step back from their candidature, they will be able to do so by the next day and a finalised list will be issued on the same day.&nbsp;The candidates will be allotted election symbols on February 23 and polling will be conducted on March 16.

<h2>Why did the PTI members resign?&nbsp;</h2>

On 11 April, 2022, 131 PTI lawmakers tendered their resignation en masse in the Parliament House in Islamabad. This came right ahead when Shehbaz Sharif was to replace Imran Khan after the latter's ouster in a no-confidence motion. However, at the time, only 11 resignations were accepted. It was only months after without any resolution between the Speaker’s and the PTI lawmakers’ demands that on 17 January 17 the resignations of 34 PTI MNAs were accepted.

Solih's win on Saturday ensures him the presidential ticket of the biggest political party in the Maldives.

In the Maldives, this is the first time a sitting president has run for office in a party primary. Solih is the seventh president of the Republic of Maldives. 60-year-old Solih took office in 2018 for a five-year term. He'll run in the September election for the position of president.

Bolsonaro was directly accused of violence by President Lula. He claimed that Bolsonaro "triggered" it. At every opportunity, he encouraged attacks on the three powers. In a speech to the nation, Lula declared that this was also his responsibility, as quoted by The New York Times.&nbsp;

As per the BBC, Lula declared a state of emergency, allowing the federal government to take "any measures necessary" to restore order in the capital. Justice Minister Flávio Dino also announced the start of an investigation, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Rosa Weber said everyone in charge of security in Brasilia would be subject to an investigation.

As per the country's electoral board, only 8.8 per cent of the nine-million-strong electorate had turned out for Saturday's polls. The polls were a culmination of a power grab by Saied in the only democracy to have emerged from the Arab Spring.

An abstention rate of more than 91 per cent "shows that very, very few Tunisians support Kais Saied's approach", Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, president of the National Salvation Front, told AFP by telephone. He said&nbsp;Saturday's election was a 'fiasco'&nbsp;and called for mass protests to demand snap presidential elections.&nbsp;The vote was boycotted by most opposition parties.

He said that the result represented "great popular disavowal" of the process that began when Saied, elected in 2019, seized executive powers last year.

In July 2021, Saied sacked the government, froze parliament and surrounded it with military vehicles. This was followed by months of political deadlock and economic crisis.

Saied, a former law professor, followed up by seizing control of the judiciary and pushing through a constitution that consolidates his near-absolute power in a widely boycotted referendum in July.

Saied's moves, a decade after ouster of dictator Ben Ali, have raised fears of a return to autocracy.

The National Salvation Front, which includes Saied's nemesis the Islamist-inspired Ennahdha party, boycotted Saturday's election, saying it was part of a "coup" against Tunisia's democracy.

The ballot for the new 161-seat assembly followed three weeks of barely noticeable campaigning, with few posters in the streets and no serious debate among a public preoccupied with day-to-day economic survival.

Saied's moves were initially supported by some Tunisians tired of the messy and sometimes corrupt democratic system installed after the revolution.

But almost a year and half on, the country's economic woes have gone from bad to worse and inflation is higher than Saturday's voter turnout.

On Thursday, 300 people marched near the prison shouting "Freedom for Castillo" under the watchful eye of police.

Boluarte took the president's office on Wednesday after Congress sacked Castillo, who was later arrested on conspiracy and rebellion charges for making attempts to dissolve the legislature, hours before the former president was set to face an impeachment vote.&nbsp;

The first female president of Peru, Boluarte, assigned the post of economy minister to former Deputy Finance Minister Alex Contreras, who is known to have a pro-market stance and is a career civil servant.&nbsp;

Chemical engineer Oscar Vera was given the post of energy and mines minister, which is an important post in copper-producing Peru.

In a televised address, President Boluarte said, "I have worked hard to form a cabinet for unity and democratic consolidation that meets the needs of the country. I call for calm, tranquility and peace. Let us avoid conflicts that put our brotherhood as Peruvians at risk."

Former state prosecutor Pedro Angulo was named as the prime minister by the president and diplomat Ana Cecilia Gervasi was given the portfolio of foreign minister.

The 60-year-old lawyer, President Boluarte, earlier served as vice president of Castillo. If no new elections are held in the country, the Boluarte will remain in office till 2026.

Castillo's lawyer has denied the charges levied against him and said that the detention of the former president is arbitrary and illegal.&nbsp;

A request has been made for the former president's asylum in Mexico and the government authorities in Mexico and Peru are holding consultations over the request, the foreign minister of Mexico said on Thursday.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, protesters across the country are demanding Congress' closure and holding fresh democratic elections to elect a new leader and not let Boluarte finish Castillo's term. The protesters are also raising demands for a new Constitution to be drafted.&nbsp;

Peru's President Dina Boluarte announced the cabinet on Saturday and asked every minister to take the anti-corruption pledge. The president asked all the 17 ministers to swear that they will deliver their duties “loyally and faithfully without committing acts of corruption”. For taking the anti-corruption pledge, the cabinet ministers knelt before the president, wearing red-and-white sashes around their waists. When the ministers answered the president's question, a large crucifix was placed in front of them. Boluarte took the president's office on Wednesday after Congress sacked Castillo, who was later arrested on conspiracy and rebellion charges for making attempts to dissolve the legislature, hours before the former president was set to face an impeachment vote. The first female president of Peru, Boluarte, assigned the post of economy minister to former Deputy Finance Minister Alex Contreras, who is known to have a pro-market stance and is a career civil servant. Chemical engineer Oscar Vera was given the post of energy and mines minister, which is an important post in copper-producing Peru. WATCH| In a televised address, President Boluarte said, "I have worked hard to form a cabinet for unity and democratic consolidation that meets the needs of the country. I call for calm, tranquility and peace. Let us avoid conflicts that put our brotherhood as Peruvians at risk." Former state prosecutor Pedro Angulo was named as the prime minister by the president and diplomat Ana Cecilia Gervasi was given the portfolio of foreign minister. The 60-year-old lawyer, President Boluarte, earlier served as vice president of Castillo. If no new elections are held in the country, the Boluarte will remain in office till 2026. Castillo's lawyer has denied the charges levied against him and said that the detention of the former president is arbitrary and illegal. A request has been made for the former president's asylum in Mexico and the government authorities in Mexico and Peru are holding consultations over the request, the foreign minister of Mexico said on Thursday. Meanwhile, protesters across the country are demanding Congress' closure and holding fresh democratic elections to elect a new leader and not let Boluarte finish Castillo's term. Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro finally broke his post-election silence on Friday (December 9) as he spoke to his supporters who called for a military coup against Brazil's president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro said he had kept silent for almost 40 days, adding, "It hurts my soul."

"Who decides where I go are you. Who decides which way the armed forces go are you," Bolsonaro told his supporters at the gates of the presidential residence.

Though he didn't explicitly endorse his supporter's demand for a military coup, Bolsonaro said that the armed forces would respect Brazil's Constitution.

Bolsonaro has not recognised Lula's victory against him in October elections.

Lula's narrow victory over Bolsonaro will be certified by Brazil's national electoral authority on Monday.

Bolsonaro told his supporters that the armed forces were Brazil's bulwark to prevent socialism in the country, adding that "nothing is lost" and their cause would prevail one day.

"The Armed Forces are united. They owe loyalty to our people and respect to the constitution, and they are responsible for our freedom", he said.

"Unlike other people, we are going to win," he said.
