The man-made lake is bearing the brunt of heatwaves, little rain and drought. The lake that supplies water to nearly half the Greek population has dipped to its lowest in the past decades.

The artificial lake submerged the village of Kallio in the 1970s&nbsp;and the Mornos reservoir was brought up in its place. The deliberate act was undertaken to construct a dam that would supply water to Athens. However, people are shocked to see that the village has re-appeared as the water level touches a scary low.

The community that lived there was forced to move upland, but they are now shocked to see the situation. “It’s a nightmarish situation,” Apostolos Gerodimos, the head of the group, told The Guardian.

They were compensated and moved to other urban centres and started a new community.

“The more water levels fall, the more buildings that were submerged back then are re-emerging. If it doesn’t rain this winter the problem is going to get much worse," he added.

“Day by day, the water goes down,” Dimitris Giannopoulos, mayor of the broader Dorida municipality, told CNN. He said that he had not seen anything like this&nbsp;in the past 33 years.

The village of Kallio comprised 80 buildings, including an Evangelist&nbsp;church and primary school. The drought has not yet revealed the church remains, although parts of the stone building where the school was are now&nbsp;becoming visible.&nbsp;

Kostas Koutsoumbas, the village’s vice-mayor, says the water levels “have fallen 40 metres” this year and it looks like they will continue to fall further.

The surface area of the lake has shrunk from around 16.8 square kilometres in August 2022 to just 12.0 square kilometres this year, as per satellite images released by Greece’s National Observatory.

Greece has an arid Mediterranean climate and is at higher risk of being affected by global warming. There was not much snow during the winter, and the summer season witnessed heatwaves and was marred by wildfires. Some of the fires reached the outskirts of Athens.&nbsp;

With the severe drought situation in the country, conflicts are expected to increase if no interventions are made. To this effect, 83 elephants from identified conflict areas will be culled, meat will be allocated to the drought relief program under the Office of the Prime Minister."

Already, 157 animals of different species have been hunted in Mangetti&nbsp;National Park. Additionally, 20 have been hunted in Mahango, 70 in Kwando, 6 in Bufallo and 9 in Mudumo. In total, this has led to the delivery of 56,875 kg&nbsp;of meat.

The ministry says that along with supplying meat to the needy population, the culling will help take pressure off water resources by cutting down wildlife numbers in areas where their numbers "exceed available grazing and water."

What is your country's long-term plans to mitigate the ongoing water crisis and support global free trade?

The drought affecting the Panama Canal is the latest episode of a sort of collective “aha!” moment. We’re in the middle of a re-conceptualisation of our country, one that has historic, demographic, and strategic dimensions. It is what I have called our “Panama 3.0” era.

The Canal was designed and built in a very different world, more than 100 years ago. Its current operating model, built upon the use of freshwater, is increasingly at odds not only with the realities of climate change but also with a world in which freshwater is already more valuable than gold. So, Panama needs to consider and implement bold, creative ambitious solutions. Solutions that, ideally, go beyond depending on rainfall.

Panama administers a major maritime chokepoint, so it needs to coordinate with other chokepoint countries, like Egypt or Singapore, to guarantee world commerce and open supply lines. Bilateral trade between our two countries reached an all-time high of $582 million in 2022, but I would like to focus more on the long term. Panama will continue to be an important trade and investment partner for India in the Central American region, as a gateway for Indian companies that want to trade and do business with the Americas. This is only the beginning. We can expect more economic integration between India and Panama in the future as more Indian companies discover the advantages of doing business with one of the most financially stable economies in the Americas. We may also see more Panamanian companies doing business with India, which is soon becoming one of the largest consumer markets in the world.

India and Panama, both aim to be a major pharma hub. How can both countries collaborate in the pharma sector?

Despite these mutual aspirations, India and Panama have no conflicting interests in the pharma sector. Panama is looking to become a regional hub for international pharma companies, including from India, to set up base in Panama and export to the larger Americas region. Given Panama's free trade agreements with large economies like the United States, this is an interesting proposition for Indian companies that are looking for a safe, reliable nearshoring hub close to their primary export market. After all, nearly one-third of India's total pharma exports are sent to the United States. Already, half a dozen Indian pharma companies already have operations in Panama, and three of them use Panama as their sub-regional headquarters for the Central American region.

In the latest study, published in the journal Nature, an international group of scientists estimated that between 10 and 47 per cent of the Amazon will be exposed to stress by 2050 that could lead to widespread ecosystem change. &nbsp;&nbsp;

That could cause the critical ecosystem to stop absorbing or even to release the carbon it stores, further driving global warming and intensifying its effects. 
 
"We are approaching a potential large-scale tipping point, and we may be closer (both at local scales and across the whole system) than we previously thought," said lead author Bernardo Flores, of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Florianopolis, Brazil.

<h2>- 'White-sand savanna' -</h2>

The researchers used information from computer models, observations and evidence of past changes going back thousands of years to map out the complexity of the forest systems and identify key causes of stress.&nbsp;

They then analysed these stressors -- including global warming, annual rainfall, the length of the dry season and deforestation -- to see how these might act individually or together to cause feedback loops that could trigger a major collapse.

By 2050 the Amazon could be exposed to unprecedented levels of water stress, they said.&nbsp;

Previous research has suggested that global heating -- which has on average warmed Earth's surface around 1.2C above preindustrial levels -- could by itself push the Amazon into a far drier savannah-like state.

The latest study suggested its fate could be more complex than that.&nbsp;

While some areas could transition into "white-sand savannas", which are already expanding in the Amazon after wildfires, other areas of the Amazon could see patchy coverage of fire-tolerant trees interspersed with invasive grasses.

Wetter areas could remain as degraded forest, with fewer tree species and a greater proportion of fast-growing plants like bamboo.&nbsp;

"We have evidence showing that rising temperatures, extreme droughts and fires can affect how the forest functions and change which tree species can integrate the forest system," said co-author Adriane Esquivel-Muelbert from Britain's Birmingham Institute of Forest Research.

Swathes of the Amazon region were gripped by a brutal drought in recent months that shrivelled key waterways, withered crops and stoked wildfires.

Scientists from the World Weather Attribution group have said the historic dry spell was driven chiefly by climate change, more than the naturally occurring El Nino weather phenomenon.

Flores said the severe drought foreshadows the climatic conditions expected for the region in the early 2030s. &nbsp;

"Immense rivers went completely dry, keeping local and Indigenous peoples isolated for months, with scarce food and water. I never imagined that people could experience a lack of water in the Amazon," he told AFP.
