Italian fashion label Fendi, part of luxury conglomerate LVMH, on Wednesday named British designer Kim Jones as artistic director for womenswear collections, a role previously held by the late Karl Lagerfeld.

Jones, who already designs men’s clothing for LVMH stable mate Christian Dior, will retain both jobs.

At Dior and in a previous design role at Louis Vuitton, Jones was credited with freshening up collections by pairing tailoring with sportier looks, at a time when luxury brands are competing to attract younger consumers.

While sales of luxury menswear ranges have gained momentum in recent years, partly thanks to a shift toward more casual styles, they are still a sliver of labels’ revenues compared to women’s collections.

Jones will work alongside Silvia Venturini Fendi, one of the scions of the brand’s founding family who creates its menswear collections and accessories and collaborated with Lagerfeld until his death in February 2019.

Founded in 1925, Rome-based Fendi has long been known for its furs, and remains one of the most prominent exponents of fur designs.

Rivals like Chanel, Kering’s Gucci or Britain’s Burberry have dropped pelts in the face of pressure from animal rights activists and changing consumer tastes.

Fendi has also found success with its double “F” logo prints and handbag collections, although LVMH does not break out revenues for its brands.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, which forced retailers to temporarily shut stores and curtailed international travel to shopping capitals like Paris, LVMH’s biggest labels like Dior and Vuitton have maintained their momentum while smaller ones have struggled more, according to analysts.

Fendi said Jones’ first collection for the brand would be presented during Milan Fashion Week next February.

Amid the outbreak of coronavirus, there has been a shortage of masks and safety gears for health workers worldwide. Several luxury companies like Chanel, Gucci have started manufacturing masks and now even Dior has joined that list. On Tuesday, Dior announced that it had reopened its Baby Dior workshop in France to help make masks as the country is facing a shortage of it. Dior joins other luxury brands like Burberry, Gucci and Channel who have transformed their factories into medical supply factories to aid in fighting the current crisis. "We are proud to reopen our @BabyDior_official ateliers in redon which since yesterday has begun the continuous production of new masks on a volunteer basis," Dior stated on Instagram."Dior is actively committed to aiding and protecting all those who are on the front line every day. Thank you to our wonderful Petites mains who, in an exceptional show of solidarity, are working tirelessly to protect them." Dior reopens its factory to produce masks for health workers in France

Christian Dior turned back the clock for its latest runway show in Paris on Tuesday, as designer Maria Grazia Chiuri dipped into her childhood and teenage memories in Italy with 1970s-inspired looks.

Models wearing headscarves showcased pieces in chequered prints and plenty of fringes, while the designer also explored feminist references that first inspired her, and which have become a recurrent theme for the LVMH -owned brand.

"I come back to when I was younger in Rome around the seventies, eighties, because it was an important moment of my life... with important issues like the liberation of women," Chiuri told Reuters in an interview.

Some looks seemed inspired directly by Chiuri's own experiences, including a camouflage-style puffer jacket.

"I remember the first time I went to the flea-market to buy my denim pants, my military jacket because I didn`t want to be dressed with a pretty dress in which I didn`t recognise myself," she said.

Actresses Demi Moore, Nina Dobrev, and Sigourney Weaver were among the stars on the front row at the Paris show. Dior was one of the first major French brands to kick off Paris Fashion Week, which closes the latest season of shows that have whizzed through New York, London and Milan.

Inspired by Carla Lonzi, a feminist activist from the seventies and Marc Bohan, Dior`s creative director for 30 years, the Autumn-Winter styles featured polka-dot prints, crossed-body bags and see-through shirts.

Dior also reinterpreted the brand's distinctive "Bar" jacket in a curvaceous cashmere wool cardigan.

Other evening looks were more luxurious, like sheer silk gowns, though many were styled with sturdy boots rather than stilettos. The show closed on glittery, fluid dresses.

The venue was designed by the Claire Fontaine collective, and included displays of illuminated messages such as "Consent" and "We are all clitoridian women" hung above the catwalk inside a pop-up installation in the Jardin des Tuileries.

"There are certain times that you sense fashion is going to break open and I feel it's happening a little bit right now," American actress Andie MacDowell told Reuters after the show. "From losing corsets to burning bras, I think women are empowering each other."
The coronavirus outbreak meant there were few Asian buyers in attendance. Last week, Italian fashion houses presented in an empty theatre at Milan Fashion Week.

Christian Dior plays with 1970s influences at Paris Fashion Week

Actor Johnny Depp defended his recent advertisement with luxury fashion and beauty brand Dior which was taken off air after it was subjected to backlash on social media.

The ad titled Sauvage was considered offensive to Native Americans and people questioned Depp's presence in it for he is not a native. The clip featured the actor wandering through the desert as Native Americans perform a war dance in traditional dress.

Defending his recent collaboration with Dior, Depp said the teaser released didn't reflect the depth of the full project, titled 'We Are the Land'. "A teaser obviously is a very concentrated version of images and there were objections to the teaser of the small film.

The film has never been seen," The Hollywood Reporter quoted the actor as saying at Deauville Film Festival."There was never -- and how could there be or how would there be -- any dishonourable [intent].

The film was made with great respect for the indigenous people not just of North America but all over the world," added the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor. He further added that the clip was made with full respect and love for the natives.

The actor attended the event to receive a career honour and also present his latest film 'Waiting for the Barbarians' to the people after it's premiere at the Venice film festival. The 56-year old received a career tribute from legendary actress Catherine Deneuve who called him "fascinating chameleon, an elusive actor. "Depp's upcoming feature is an adaptation of author J.M. Coetzee's novel which narrates the cruelty of colonialism. The film is directed by Colombian director Ciro Guerra, who has helmed Oscar-nominated 'Embrace of the Serpent'.

Around an enormous outdoor runway lit with dozens of floating tealights, French label Christian Dior crisscrossed cultures and continents at its first fashion show in Morocco on Monday, with beaded dresses and patterned prints taking centre stage.

The 'Cruise' Collection - hosted outside the usual fashion week calendar, but which is an important source of sales - drew stars including actresses Lupita Nyong'o and Shailene Woodley to Marrakech for the extravaganza.

As night fell over the city's 16th century El Badi Palace and its pool and gardens, models - some wearing bandanas - showcased flowing gowns in maroon or black alongside patterned styles in fabrics from Ivory Coast, fashioned into the brand's trademark synched suit jackets.

Unusually for the French label, it commissioned an Abidjan-based firm to manufacture the cloth, which in its most elaborate form is printed on two sides, and which featured Toile de Jouy-style figures and landscapes Dior is known for.

"You're really speaking about the human touch here, like in couture," Dior's creative chief Maria Grazia Chiuri said in an interview in Paris ahead of the show. The fabrics, found across West Africa and showcasing symbols that are sometimes used as a form of language, had inspired the collection, she added.

Designers Pathé Ouedraogo - or Pathe'O, from Burkina Faso, who is known for dressing Nelson Mandela - and Grace Wales Bonner, a British artist, also worked with Dior on pieces for the show, among other collaborators.

"It helps us to have a different point of view," Chiuri said, adding that fashion was shifting from a time when it only "spoke only with a small audience".

"The way you can speak about the silhouette, the relationship between the dress and the body, and about how you represent yourself, if you see this argument only from one point of view, I don't think it's believable today."

LVMH-owned Dior and other luxury brands are increasingly turning to elaborate or far-flung catwalk displays to emphasise their Cruise ranges, which tend to have a longer shelf life in store than other collections.

With the Marrakech show, Dior also paid homage to the late Yves Saint Laurent, who took on the brand's creative reigns in the late 1950s and was inspired by North Africa throughout his career.

A museum dedicated to the designer, who went on to found his own label, opened in Marrakech in 2017.

Dior appoints first female creative director in its 70 year-history

Appointing a new Dior creative director is a "work in progress", the French fashion house`s chief executive said on Tuesday, with the luxury label still to name a head designer some six months after Raf Simons left to set up his own brand.

Dior, one of the world`s most famous designer houses, announced Simons` surprise departure in October after some three years at the helm. An in-house creative team has been working on collections since.

"(It is a) work in progress, work in progress and we`re giving it a little bit of time," Chief Executive Sidney Toledano told Reuters. "It`s an important position."

Toledano was speaking at a preview for Dior`s new London boutique opening this week, a four-floor store selling clothes, accessories, children`s wear as well as a home collection.

"The UK market in London business for us is doing very well, we still have double digit growth," he said, adding however that last year`s Islamist militant attacks in Paris had hurt tourism and sales in France.

"...What happened in November had a real impact on the first quarter but still we will continue developing our presence in Paris. We have a five-year plan and in September we`ll open a new fine jewellery boutique."

Dior also presented its cruise collection on Tuesday at Blenheim Palace near Oxford, Winston Churchill`s birthplace and where the label hosted fashion shows in 1954 and 1958.

Cruise collections, originally designed for wealthy fashionistas holidaying on yachts or cruises during the winter months, are outfits produced by stylists on top of seasonal lines.

Lucie Meier and Serge Ruffieux, who are leading Dior`s creative team, took inspiration from "not only the post-war high society`s wardrobes but also the restlessness and wanderlust (that) characterized the period", according to show notes.

Models, such as new Dior makeup ambassador Bella Hadid, strutted down the catwalk in tops, dresses and skirts adorned in floral as well as Asian and African prints and embroidery.

Sleeves were voluminous and up to the elbow, worn with trousers flared and cut above the ankle or slim skirts.

Dior`s signature Bar jacket, usually cinched at the waist, was slightly longer and covering hips, while its well-known bows were loosened to resemble scarves. Several outfits were layered, such as skirts over trousers.
