The opening game of a trio of Thanksgiving Day clashes went down to the wire but Chicago made a mess of their final possession, allowing Detroit to move to 11-1 on the season for the first time in franchise history.

The Lions had led 16-0 at half-time after three field goals and a three-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff to Sam LaPorta. But the Bears fought back strongly with three touchdowns in the second half -- two of them on the connection between quarterback Caleb Williams and receiver Keenan Allen.

When Williams found D.J. Moore with a superb 31-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, the Lions' advantage was reduced to three points. Chicago forced Detroit to punt on the next possession, leaving Williams with the ball and the chance to take the game to overtime or win it.

A pair of penalties hampered the Bears' final drive but despite Williams taking a sack with 36 seconds left in the game, a field goal opportunity remained well within reach. But instead of taking a timeout, the Bears offense tried to set up to gain some more yards for kicker Cairo Santos losing precious time.

The ball was snapped with just six seconds left and Williams threw an incomplete pass as the clock ran out.

The Bears, who suffered their sixth straight loss, looked confused and frustrated. "All of a sudden I see everybody come on the field and the game's over. So I was kind of like, 'What the... had just happened?'," said Bears tight-end Cole Kmet. "I'm sure the thought process was then to be able to get some yardage and then take the timeout and then kick the field goal. But we were just a little too late on that. And then that ended up being the final play," he added.

There was evident relief among the Lions after they flirted with what would have been a surprise loss. "It was a crazy ending and we fought hard to the end to get it done. It was scary," admitted Goff. "Our defense held strong. Our defense, they'll bend not break and they made those plays at the end there and we win," he added.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is 'still trying to put together' the pre-game detainment by Miami-Dade police on Sunday (Sep 8). The WR was eventually let go after 'several minutes' and addressed the situation post game.

"Right now, I'm still trying to put it all together ... I still don't know what happened," Hill said.&nbsp;

The police had detained Hill three hours prior to their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was detained for speeding and reckless driving before being placed in handcuffs.

The Detroit Lions got back to winning ways with a clinical all-round display to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders 26-14 on Monday (Oct 30).

Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw one touchdown and finished with 272 passing yards, while Detroit's rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs also caught the eye with his first home touchdown at Ford Field.

Gibbs, 21, piled up 152 rushing yards from 26 carries as Detroit returned to form after last week's 38-6 thrashing by Baltimore.

The victory sees Detroit improve to 6-2 to tighten their grip on the NFC North division, which they lead from Minnesota (4-4).

"I thought we played really well all across the board," Goff told ESPN after the win.

"We made some critical mistakes on offense but we were able to overcome them and that's what good teams do.

"Defence played their tails off and gave us a lot of good opportunities. It was a full-team win. It was great."

The Lions were slow to get going and were forced to settle for three straight Riley Patterson field goals to open up a 9-0 lead early in the second quarter.&nbsp;

The Raiders got back into the game in the closing minutes of the first half when Josh Jacobs rushed over from three yards for a touchdown after a 10-play 75-yard drive.

But Detroit responded immediately, with Goff picking out rookie tight end Sam LaPorta for an 18-yard touchdown with 27 seconds remaining in the second quarter to make it 16-7 at the break.

The Lions were rocked back early in the third quarter when Goff could only watch in dismay as former Los Angeles Rams team-mate Marcus Peters picked off his pass and raced 75 yards into the end zone.

That made it 16-14, but Gibbs then took over to produce a dazzling 27-yard rushing touchdown to leave Detroit 23-14 up after Patterson kicked the extra point.

Patterson then booted a 52-yard field goal, his fourth of the night, to complete the scoring.

"It was a long, hard game," Goff told broadcaster NBC. "We probably didn't play our best, but we're built for this, we really are -- playing the four-quarter game like this."

David Montgomery had 21 carries for 74 yards for Detroit, including the go-ahead touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

The Lions haven't won an NFL playoff game since 1991, and last played for an NFL title back in 1957.

An 8-2 run over their last 10 games last season had many thinking this is the year Goff and Co. can turn things around.

Goff, however, wasn't getting ahead of himself when asked what the win meant for the long-struggling Lions.

"It means we're 1-0," he said.

Mahomes, who had been 5-0 in openers, threw for 226 yards with two touchdowns. He was also the Chiefs' leading rusher with 45 yards on six carries.

But the Chiefs clearly missed star tight end Travis Kelce, who was out with a knee injury. Kadarius Toney struggled unsuccessfully to fill the void, one of his missed catches bouncing into the hands of Branch who returned it for a TD in his NFL debut.

Week one continues on Sunday, when the marquee match-ups include the big-spending Baltimore Ravens hosting the Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles, who fell to Kansas City in the Super Bowl in February, at the New England Patriots.

Former round 1 pick quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is heading to Detroit. The person familiar with the deal told USA TODAY Sports about the potential signing on the condition of anonymity. This would be Bridgewater's fifth team in as many seasons.

The 2014 NFL Draft pick will be reuniting with Lions head coach Dan Campbell. The QB was with the New Orleans Saints from 2018-19 during Campbell's tenure as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach with the Saints from 2016-2020.

The 30-year-old has played with five different NFL teams so far in his nine-year career which started with the Minnesota Vikings in 2014. After spending three years with the Vikings, Bridgewater joined the Saints in 2018 and stayed till the end of the 2019 season.

His next stop was in North Carolina with the Panthers where he spent a single season before moving to Denver to be with the Broncos for the 2021 season. He played with the Miami Dolphins last season before becoming a free agent.

In the same year, he threw five fewer interceptions (9) than the previous year (14). He suffered a career-threatening season-ending knee injury prior to the 2016 season but returned to action the following year, although played just one game.

He was largely a backup to Saints great Drew Brees in New Orleans and played in just 14 games in two seasons. The next two years, with the Panthers and the Broncos, respectively saw him getting back to good form as he played a total of 29 games for them.

Bridgewater racked up 3,733 yards in 340 completed passes out of 492 attempts to go with 15 touchdowns with the Panthers - his best year in the NFL. Caldwell, who is known as one of the faces of the NFL when it comes of Black head coaches, was fired as the Lions head coach in 2017. He, since then, has interviewed many times to be the head coach but with no luck. Caldwell, 68, said on Tuesday that he's only concerned about his current job. Caldwell, who is known as one of the faces of the NFL when it comes of Black head coaches, was fired as the Lions head coach in 2017. He, since then, has interviewed many times to be the head coach but with no luck. Caldwell, 68, said on Tuesday that he's only concerned about his current job.
