The US Department of Energy (DOE) has made a groundbreaking announcement, envisioning the transformation of once-secret lands into clean energy powerhouses. These sites, which were previously utilised for developing atomic bombs, are now poised to play a vital role in fostering clean energy initiatives across the United States.

The DOE has identified approximately 70,000 acres (283 square kilometres) of property across five states, most of which serve as a buffer for national security purposes. These lands have the potential to serve as hosts for renewable energy projects such as solar, wind, and nuclear power. This ambitious plan aligns with America's commitment to advancing towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.

US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm presented the groundbreaking 'cleanup to clean energy' plan, aligning with President Joe Biden's ambitious clean electricity goals. Secretary Granholm reassured the public about the safety of these lands, stating that they are now fully clean and ready for redevelopment.

Experienced developers supporting at least 200 megawatts of clean electricity generation are poised to bring about a revolutionary transformation in the nation's energy landscape through this initiative.

"These sites are all safe now, completely clean, and ready for redevelopment," said U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm at a press conference in Washington, D.C., held at her department's headquarters.

Hanford's transformation: from nuclear legacy to clean energy

During the 1940s, the United States government established Hanford and other complexes as part of the Manhattan Project to produce plutonium and uranium for atomic weapons.

Currently, Hanford is no longer operational, and the comprehensive decontamination of the entire site, plagued with highly radioactive waste leaks and other contamination, has already incurred billions of dollars in expenses. The ongoing cleanup efforts are expected to continue for several more years.

While there are no immediate details about the specific locations or timelines of potential developments, the initiative holds the promise of transforming these once-secret lands into significant contributors to clean energy generation.

Furthermore, amidst Hanford's continuous decontamination efforts to address highly radioactive waste and pollution, the ultimate mission remains crystal clear: harnessing the potential of solar, wind, and advanced nuclear technology to pave the path for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable America.

The Department of Energy's 'cleanup to clean energy' plan not only echoes historical significance but also perfectly aligns with environmental goals, propelling the nation towards the momentous achievement of a grid powered entirely by clean energy by 2035.

US to transform Cold War sites into largest solar power project

The White House will ask Congress next month for a 72 percent cut to research programs on clean energy and energy efficiency in fiscal 2019, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing draft budget documents.

The Trump administration is pursuing a so-called energy dominance policy that seeks to boost production and exports of oil, natural gas, and coal.

The Department of Energy had asked the White House for more modest spending cuts to the programs on advancing wind and solar power and efficiency technologies, but the executive branch`s Office of Management and Budget wanted deeper cuts, the report said.

The White House and the Energy Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the report.

The budget is primarily a political document and is not likely to be embraced by Congress, but it represents a starting point for the administration on negotiations.

Spending at the DOE`s energy efficiency and renewable energy was set at $2.04 billion in the 2018 fiscal year. The Trump administration had asked the spending to be cut to $636 million, a request that Congress did not approve.

White House to propose 72 per cent cut to clean energy research: Report

Oil prices sank in Asia today after data indicated a rise in US stockpiles, reigniting concerns about a supply glut, while profit-takers stepped in after the previous day's rally.

The American Petroleum Institute reported a 2.2 million barrel rise in reserves last week, confounding expectations of a dip at the height of the crucial summer holiday driving season.

The figures rattled traders as the Department of Energy prepares to release official data later today, which is considered a key gauge of demand in the world's top oil consumer.

At about 0645 GMT, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate fell 51 cents, or 1.09 per cent, to $46.29 while Brent was 60 cents, or 1.24 per cent, lower at $47.87.

"It's bearish for oil if stockpiles gain because seasonally speaking, inventories tend to decline at least until mid-August," Hong Sung Ki, a commodities analyst at Samsung Futures Inc., told Bloomberg News.

"But of course, we need to see whether this will be a one-time gain or not," the analyst added.

Both contracts surged almost five per cent on Tuesday from two-month lows after The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) said it expected the global supply glut to ease this year and next thanks to reductions in output from producers outside the cartel, particularly the United States.

Prices have fluctuated between $44 and $52 a barrel over the past month after hitting near 13-year lows below $30 in February, but a surge in OPEC production in June revived fears about oversupply.

Energy information provider S&P Global Platts said production from the OPEC climbed 300,000 barrels per day in June, close to an eight-year high of 32.73 million barrels per day.

This is due to a tentative recovery in production in Nigeria and Libya, and a "steady" rise in output from Saudi Arabia and Iran, it said.

"We had the bulls for a couple of weeks and the bears are starting to step in," David Lennox, an analyst at Fat Prophets in Sydney, said.

"The market has realised that surplus that we had was disrupted, and that it is coming back because those disruptions are going away," he added.

Canadian producers are also gradually coming back online, restoring supply for the biggest crude supplier to the US market, after wildfires swept through the Alberta oil sands region from May to July.

Oil prices sink in Asia triggering supply glut concerns

Oil prices sank for a sixth straight session today in Asia, tracking a sell-off across equities with an expected pick-up in output adding to worries about the global economy and a weaker-than-forecast fall in US stockpiles.

The Department of Energy said commercial inventories fell by 900,000 barrels in the week ending June 10, far fewer than the 2.33 million predicted in a Bloomberg survey, suggesting demand is easing in the world's top oil consumer.

The news sent the commodity tumbling and at about 0320 GMT on Thursday in Asia US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) slipped 46 cents, or 0.96 per cent, to $47.55 while Brent shed 34 cents, or 0.69 per cent, to $48.63.

After almost doubling between February and last week, WTI has plunged eight per cent from an 11-month high, while Brent has lost more than six per cent from an eight-month peak.

Supply-side fears have increased, with Canada's output likely to normalise as wildfires that hit its oil region subside while Nigerian rebels, who have been attacking crude installations, consider peace talks with the government.

"We still, when you think about it, have a surplus of supply because it has really only been disruptions that have seen that surplus disappear," David Lennox, an analyst at Fat Prophets in Sydney, told Bloomberg News.

He added: "The market is now starting to suggest that once the disruptions are behind us, surplus will re-appear and the rally that we have seen in the prices will evaporate."

Selling pressure has been inflamed by turmoil on stock markets as traders grow increasingly fearful that Britain will vote next week to leave the European Union, which many warn could precipitate another global rout.

Federal Reserve boss Janet Yellen on Wednesday issued a warning about the possible impact of a "Leave" vote as the US central bank lowered its economic growth and interest rate projections over the next few years.

A Bank of Japan decision to hold steady on monetary policy despite the weak economy has also added to uncertainty, said CMC Markets analyst Margaret Yang.
