The Congress vice-president further asserted that people don&#39;t trust the Modi-led central government. &quot;Business thrives on trust. Business is about creating harmony. The truth is that the trust in this government is dead. For some reasons, the PM and his government are absolutely convinced that every single person in this country is a thief,&quot; Rahul Gandhi said.

He also said that today no one in the government listens to the pain of people. &quot;One develops trust by listening to each other. Today there is no one in the government who is ready to listen to the pain of our people,&quot; the Congress vice president said.

Rahul also took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi&#39;s claim of having &#39;56-inch chest&#39; and said, &quot;Prime Minister Narendra Modi has very a big chest but a small heart. Modi ji and his government have given a double blow to our economy- demonetisation and GST (Goods and Services Tax).&quot;

As the BJP&#39;s prime ministerial candidate in January 2014, Narendra Modi declared at a rally in Uttar Pradesh that &quot;a 56-inch chest&quot; is a pre-requisite to convert India&#39;s most populous state into one as developed as Gujarat.

Ahead of the first anniversary of demonetisation on November 8, Rahul also targeted the prime minister over the shock move.

&quot;Prime Minister has forgotten that all cash is not black and all black is not bad. November 8th is the &#39;barsi&#39; (death anniversary) of note ban. GST or Gabbar Singh Tax has unleashed tax terrorism. Small businesses are crying due to the GST,&quot; Rahul Gandhi said.

On November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the&nbsp;demonetisation of Rs 500&nbsp;and Rs 1000&nbsp;banknotes with an aim to weaken the black money or shadow economy in the country. With the shock move completing a year, the Opposition parties have announced they will observe November 8 as &#39;black day&#39;.

The BJP will&nbsp;observe the day as &#39;Anti-Black Money Day&#39; to counter the Opposition&#39;s plan. The GST is an indirect tax which was introduced in India on July 1, 2017, and is applicable throughout India which replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and state governments.

On Monday, while addressing a rally in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Rahul for the first time termed GST as &#39;Gabbar Singh Tax&#39;.

Meanwhile, the Congress vice-president also launched an attack on Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and said, &quot;Businesses are drowning, but Mr&nbsp;Jaitley has the nerve to go on TV every other day saying things are just fine. However, recent research by eminent economists has shown that economic inequality is at is at its highest in the Modi regime.&quot;

Jaitley on Wednesday criticised the Congress over black money by saying that he can&#39;t recollect any significant step that the grand old party had taken during its tenure to address the problem. The Finance Minister also said that the Congress and others who are making comments on note ban have not understood the whole object behind the demonetisation move.

Jaitley said that it is obvious that those parties which were in power couldn&#39;t take action against black money as squeezing black money is not possible through baby steps. Rahul also mocked the BJP over Taj Mahal controversy, on a day Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Taj Mahal for the first time since assuming power in the state and after BJP MLA Sangeet Som&#39;s stirred up a controversy with his statement on the iconic monument. &quot;World is laughing at us with debates that Taj Mahal was built by Indians,&quot; Rahul said.

The BJP MLA from Uttar Pradesh raked up a controversy by saying that Taj Mahal was built by &quot;traitors&quot; who wanted to eliminate all Hindus. All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA) have given a call for demonstration against the problems that various banks and their employees are facing due to demonetisation.

The agitational programmes that they plan to undertake include demonstrations on December 28, followed by the unions addressing a letter to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on December 29, the two bank unions said. The union members also plan to demonstrate over the issue on January 2 and 3, 2017.

AIBEA general secretary C H Venkatchalam and his AIBOA counterpart S Nagrajan in a statement issued today said, &quot;As per the call of our organisations, already our units have undertaken the programme of demonstrations in all major centres and met the local executives of RBI to hand over our memorandum&quot;.

The unions have demanded to ensure supply of adequate cash to all banks and branches, restore all ATMs without further delay and ensure transparency in cash supply to banks.

&quot;If RBI is not able to supply adequate cash to banks, then decision should be taken to suspend cash transactions in the bank branches till sufficient cash is supplied to banks,&quot; the statement said.

They also demanded CBI inquiry into the cases of seizure of huge number of new currency notes with some big persons when the bank branches are cash starved. The unions also demanded compensation to the families of the persons and bank staff who lost their lives recently due to the demonetisation.

The statement asked RBI and state governments to ensure safety and protection of bank employees and officers by maintaining law and order in all branches to prevent harassment of the staff.

They also want proper compensation to employees and officers for their extra work/late sittings done since November 8. Both the unions claim to have over 5.50 lakh members out of the nearly 9 lakh bank employees in the country.

Bank unions call for agitation over note ban-related issues

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today that things will get worse before they get better. He was referring to the aftermath of demonetisation; there have been reports from around the country of people having to put up with tremendous hardship.&nbsp;

&quot;I had said from day one this is not an ordinary decision. It is full of difficulties. It is a difficult decision and I had said a lot of hardships and problems will be faced,&quot; the Press Trust of India reported Modi as saying.&nbsp;

&quot;For 50 days this difficulty has to be there. And this difficulty will even increase, but after 50 days, I have done my calculation, the situation, in one go, will turn to gradually move towards normalcy. You will see after 50 days that situation will slowly start improving in front of your eyes,&quot; he said.&nbsp;

Despite the hardships, so far, the common man -- or at least many of them -- seems to have stood behind Modi and his promise of finding the black money hidden in the economy.&nbsp;

Modi was in Deesa, Gujarat, where he was inaugurating dairy plants.&nbsp;

The demonetisation, the PM said, will root out terrorism, corruption and fake currency.

Twelve people were injured, after a car allegedly being driven by a drunk driver, rammed into a queue outside an ATM in Solapur district today.

The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, where the condition of three people is stated to be serious, police said.

The incident happened around 11 AM at Atarnagar on the Solapur-Bijapur road.

&quot;We have registered a case against the driver under relevant sections of IPC and he has been arrested. Bijapur Road police is investigating the matter,&quot; Solapur SP Ravindra Sengaonkar, told PTI.

The car driver, who was allegedly in an inebriated state, was beaten up by the crowd and handed over to police.

Alleged drunk driver rams 12 in ATM queue

Aiming to move towards a cashless India, the Centre and states could soon have powers to specify categories of employers who will have to pay wages either through cheques or by crediting the amount directly into the workers&#39; bank account.

&quot;Government is ready with the Payment of Wages (Amendment) Bill, 2016 which seeks to empower the Centre as well as states to specify industrial or other establishments where employers shall pay workers either by cheque or by crediting wages into their bank accounts,&quot; a source said.

&quot;The proposal to amend the Payment of Wages Act 1936, is likely to be placed before Union Cabinet for approval in the next few days. Government intends to push the bill during the ongoing winter session of the Parliament after Cabinet nod,&quot; the source added.

At present, an employer is required to obtain a written authorisation from the employee to pay wages either through cheque or by crediting it into the employee&#39;s bank account.

The Act had come into force on April 23, 1936, providing for payment of wage in coin or currency notes, or in both. The provision for payment of wages by cheque or crediting it into bank account after obtaining the requisite authorisation of employee was inserted in 1975.

At present, the Act covers all those employees in certain categories of establishments whose wage does not exceed Rs 18,000 per month.

Presently, the Centre can make rules regarding payment of wages in relation to railways, air transport services, mines and oilfields and its establishments, while states take&nbsp;the call regarding all other cases.

Centre, states to list industries for cashless wage payment

Earlier today, the government had warned that those who have allowed others to deposit money in their bank accounts, will be prosecuted for abetment under the Income Tax Act.

If it is established that the money deposited in bank account does not belong to the account holder, it would be subject to tax, interest and 200 per cent penalty.

Demonetisation: No exchange of old notes for non-bank customers on Saturday

With banks struggling to cope with rush to get alternative currency, the government has extended use of old defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes for paying household utility bills, fuel, taxes and fees and purchases from co-operative stores till November 24.

While withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from the night of November 8-9, the government had allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing at airports, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps for 72 hours.

This list was later expanded to include payments for metro rail tickets, highway and road toll, purchase of medicines on doctor prescription from the government and private pharmacies, LPG gas cylinders, railway catering, electricity and water bills and ASI monument entry tickets.

As banks struggled to give alternate currency, the deadline was extended by another 72 hours. That deadline was to end at midnight tonight, but has now been extended till November 24, official sources said.

With banks struggling to cope with rush to get alternative currency, the government has extended use of old defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes for paying household utility bills, fuel, taxes and fees and purchases from co-operative stores till November 24. While withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes from the night of November 8-9, the government had allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing at airports, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps for 72 hours. This list was later expanded to include payments for metro rail tickets, highway and road toll, purchase of medicines on doctor prescription from the government and private pharmacies, LPG gas cylinders, railway catering, electricity and water bills and ASI monument entry tickets. As banks struggled to give alternate currency, the deadline was extended by another 72 hours. That deadline was to end at midnight tonight, but has now been extended till November 24, official sources said.
