A frightening commotion broke out in the front of Delta Flight 1730, according to the airline and media reports.

As a man grappled with flight attendants -- and said repeatedly that he was "going to take the plane down" -- the pilot called over the public address system for "all able-bodied men" to assist.

Several, including an off-duty pilot, rushed forward and, after several moments of violent struggle partly captured on video, were able to overpower the man, police said.

The plane, which had been well on its way from the West Coast to Atlanta in the southeast, was diverted instead to Oklahoma City.&nbsp;

Police there took the suspect, identified as an off-duty Delta employee in his late 20s, into custody, reports said. His precise motive was unknown.

After complaining of chest pains and showing signs of what police said were mental issues, the man was hospitalized.

No other injuries were reported.

In a statement, Delta thanked the passengers and crew who "assisted in detaining an unruly passenger."

Police searched the plane before allowing the flight to continue on. The FBI is investigating.

The incident took place the same day the US Transportation Security Administration said its agents had screened more than two million passengers at airports -- the most since before the Covid-19 crisis erupted.

Meantime, data from the Federal Aviation Authority show that "unruly passenger" incidents on commercial flights have shot up this year amid high stress levels and as mask-wearing has taken on a political edge.

The agency has launched 394 formal enforcement actions in "unruly passenger" cases through May 25 of this year, a far higher pace than the 183 for all of 2020, according to its website.

Many more cases have not led to formal action.

For two weeks, Delta Air Lines and Coca-Cola had been under pressure from activists and Black executives who wanted the companies to publicly oppose a new law in Georgia that makes it harder for people to vote. This is a corporate ambush on Democracy.”

It was another illustration of just how fraught it is for big companies to wade in to partisan politics, where any support for the left draws the ire of the right, and vice versa.

In an interview conducted on Wednesday, the sisters shared their long fight with the coronavirus after Janice was taken to an emergency room.&nbsp;

Janice said she was in hospital and rehabilitation centres for about 115 days to recover from coronavirus, including a coma for 57 days.&nbsp;

After the interview, Janice, who is Atlanta-based employee for Delta, received a message from her company's CEO Ed Bastian which added to the happiness of the sisters after successfully enduring a fight against Covid-19.

"Please let Janice know while she was in the coma, we (including myself) were following her progress daily and including her in our prayers. She is a miracle and we are so proud of her strength in this fight," the statement by Bastian said.&nbsp;

"Also let her know I can't wait to send her and her sister on a first class trip, on me, anywhere in the world we fly when she's able to travel. Merry Christmas!"

The sisters greatly appreciated the gesture and thanked Delta CEO and other people who stood by them during the period of crisis.&nbsp;

"To be here having this interview with you now, to me it just makes me realize every morning when I wake up, to say 'Thank you God for another day," said Janice. &nbsp;

In one incident on July 26, 2016, a Muslim couple were removed from Delta Flight 229 at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris after a passenger told a flight attendant their behaviour made her "very uncomfortable and nervous".

"Mrs X" was wearing a headscarf and the passenger said, "Mr X" had inserted something into his watch.

The flight attendant said she saw Mr X texting on his cell phone using the word "Allah" several times.

The captain then spoke with Delta's corporate security, who said Mr and Mrs X were US citizens returning home and there were "no red flags."

However, the captain refused to let them re-board the plane.

The Department of Transportation said the captain had failed to follow Delta's security protocol and it appeared that "but for Mr and Mrs X's perceived religion, Delta would not have removed or denied them reboarding" of their flight.

The second incident covered in the order involved another Muslim passenger who boarded Flight 49 at Amsterdam heading for New York on July 31, 2016.

Other passengers and flight attendants complained about him but the first officer saw nothing unusual about him and Delta security also said "Mr A"'s record had "no red flags."

The captain prepared the plane for departure but then returned to the gate and had Mr A removed and his seat searched.

The Transportation Department said the captain had not followed Delta's security protocol and the removal of Mr A "after being cleared was discriminatory."

Delta disagreed that it engaged in discriminatory conduct but "does not dispute that each of these two incidents could have been handled differently," the order said.

The government said the fine "establishes a strong deterrent against future similar unlawful practices by Delta and other carriers."

Following the July 2016 incidents, Delta said it had reviewed and enhanced its procedure to investigate suspicious activity "to make it more collaborative and objective."

A passenger on a China-bound Delta Air Lines flight was charged on Friday with assaulting flight attendants and other passengers mid-air who fought desperately to restrain him as he tried opening the exit door of the plane, Reuters reported.

Joseph Daniel Hudek IV, 23, lunged for an exit door, grabbed the handle and tried to open it, according to the FBI.

Crew members and passengers of Boeing 767-300 battled to subdue Hudek.

The FBI said Hudek repeatedly punched a flight attendant and a fellow passenger and persisted in trying to pull open the door, even as a second flight attendant struck him over the head with two large wine bottles.&nbsp;

Both flight attendants were women.

Hudek managed to open the door halfway before he was finally restrained with zip ties.

The flight took off at 5.30 pm from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport but had to return after 45 minutes.&nbsp;

The plane landed safely, and the two individuals punched during the struggle were treated for facial injuries.
