The air quality in some of the areas of the national capital has improved to the moderate category while some regions still remain in the 'poor category'.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CBCP), Burari crossing, at PM 2.5, the AQI was docked at 156 at 8:30 in the morning.

In capital's one of most crowded areas - ITO Delhi, the AQI was 162 while in Mathura Road&nbsp;it was 133, which falls in the moderate category.

However, in Dwarka, Sector 8 and Wazirpur area, the level of air pollution was poor with PM 2.5 at 237 and 234 respectively.

During winter season each year, most of northern India suffers from a spike in toxicity in the air due to the change in weather patterns and crop residue burning in the neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Not only that, but a dip in temperature along with low wind speed also tends to trap air pollutants closer to the ground.

In Delhi's adjoining Ghaziabad and Noida also, the air quality improved to the moderate category with the AQI 174 and 159.

In Haryana's Gurugram also, at Vikas Sadan, the AQI docked at 111 in the morning today.

Delhi-NCR: Air quality improves to 'moderate'

The air quality of Delhi on Tuesday remained in the 'poor' category for the second consecutive day with overall Air Quality Index (AQI) at 242 with PM10 at 157 and PM2.5 at 70 at 9 am, said System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).

The capital received a drizzle in the morning but it did not bring down the pollution levels. The 'Poor' AQI category is forecast for November 27 as well.

An AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor and 401-500 is marked as severe/hazardous.

AQI was 235 in Dhirpur at 9 am and it dipped to the ' poor' category at 263 in Mathura Road area. AQI near Pusa, Airport Terminal 3 and Delhi University stood at 228, 264 and 215 respectively.

Residents of the city complained of breathlessness and fatigue while moving about outdoors in the morning and urged the government to take measures to deal with the problem.

"I feel suffocated when I go outdoors. I just want to breathe fresh air. After all, health is wealth," said Kapil Sharma.

"Pollution is a major problem in Delhi. Citizens must also make efforts to reduce pollution," said Ravinder.

"The government must take stringent measures to combat the air pollution menace and steps should be taken to curb stubble burning," stressed Poonam.
On stubble burning, the Centre-run SAFAR stated, "The fire counts as per SAFAR multi-satellite product estimate is 463 which is sufficiently high and wind arriving in Delhi are from North but fire contribution in Delhi's air quality is marginal. This is due to very high upper air transport level winds which may surpass the plume without descending in Delhi. It is an ideal example that fire counts are not directly proportional to deterioration of Delhi's AQI and meteorology playing a decisive role," the organisation stated in its advisory.

SAFAR has advised 'sensitive groups' to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion. It has also advised residents to take more breaks and do less intense activities. The asthmatics have been advised to keep medicines ready if symptoms of coughing or shortness of breath occur. Heart patients should see a doctor if there are palpitations, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/delhi-air-quality-index-to-be-bad-today-may-worsen-in-upcoming-days-263285">air quality in Delhi-NCR</a> plunged into 'very poor' category again on Thursday and is expected to drop to 'severe' by tomorrow, as per the data provided by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).

The Air Quality Index (AQI) today was recorded at 312 with PM 10 at 142 and PM 2.5 at 72.

"The overall Delhi AQI is in the very poor category and is slowly declining and may further deteriorate by tomorrow towards the higher end of the very poor scale and may touch 'severe' in some parts of Delhi by November 22," stated the organisation in its advisory.

The pollution in Delhi can be attributed to two factors - slow surface winds in Delhi, and increasing fire counts compared to last week. Additionally, stubble level winds from the burning sites will contribute to the pollution.

However, transport-level winds are likely to be highly variable in direction and may fluctuate between Easterly to Northerly and may not bring significant stubble impact to Delhi tomorrow.

"The pollution level in Delhi which use to be around 100-200 is reaching 600 levels on AQI. It is very dangerous for people. It is increasing cardiovascular diseases along with lung-related diseases. People having chronic diseases and bronchitis asthma are the worst hit," said Manoj Kumar, Director of the Department of Cardiology at a private hospital.

A meeting between the top leaders of NCP and Congress will be held on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing political crisis in Maharashtra.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/meeting-of-congress-ncp-leaders-tomorrow-in-delhi-263226">The meeting</a> will take place at the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/sharad-pawar-will-discuss-maharashtra-farmers-issues-with-pm-modi-today-263275">Sharad Pawar's</a> residence at Janpath in the national capital at 5 pm.

Speaking to ANI, NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Malik said, "Today, there is a meeting of the Congress and NCP leaders at 6 Janpath in Sharad Pawar's residence."
In that meeting, leaders of both the parties from Maharashtra and Delhi will discuss the current political situation in Maharashtra.

"There is a presidential rule in Maharashtra. People and farmers are suffering. The administration has&nbsp;collapsed. There should be an alternative government. There is a meeting between the two parties to find a solution," he said.

Speaking about the plan of NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena to form government in Maharashtra, Malik said, "When Sena and BJP have taken a decision not to form the government, three parties have to come together to form the government. We have to take everyone into confidence before making a decision. A process is underway. Without Sena, there cannot be an alternative government."

Maharashtra came under President's Rule after all the parties failed to form a government in the state.

BJP, which emerged as the single largest party, could not stake claim to form a government as its ally Shiv Sena remained firm on rotating the Chief Minister's post and equal sharing of Cabinet berths.

Shiv Sena parted its ways with BJP only to explore ways to form a government. It, however, failed to prove the support of the required number of MLAs in the time given by Governor BS Koshyari.

The Governor had then invited NCP, the third-largest party, to prove its ability to form the government failing which President's Rule was imposed in the state on Tuesday.

The Shiv Sena is now in parley&nbsp;with the Congress and NCP to form a government in the state.

The BJP won 105 seats in the 288-member assembly followed by Shiv Sena 56, NCP 54 and Congress 44.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/air-quality-improves-slightly-in-delhi-safar-says-relief-temporary-263072">air quality</a> is likely to be in the 'bad'&nbsp;to 'very bad'&nbsp;category on Wednesday and may worsen even further in the coming two days in the Delhi and NCR region, according to Skymet Weather.

According to weather experts from Skymet, the reason behind this is a western disturbance on the western side of the Himalayas which is going to impact the flow of air in Delhi-NCR regions.

The reduced flow of air is likely to lead to an increase in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/no-need-for-odd-even-scheme-as-delhi-skies-have-cleared-up-arvind-kejriwal-262895">accumulation of pollutants</a> in the region and on November 21 and 22 when the situation could worsen even further.

The air quality is likely to be in the 'bad' to 'very bad' category on Wednesday and may worsen even further in the coming two days in the Delhi and NCR region, according to Skymet Weather. According to weather experts from Skymet, the reason behind this is a western disturbance on the western side of the Himalayas which is going to impact the flow of air in Delhi-NCR regions. The reduced flow of air is likely to lead to an increase in the accumulation of pollutants in the region and on November 21 and 22 when the situation could worsen even further. Apart from Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad too are going to be impacted by the worsening air quality. Gravitas: Delhi's Pollution - crisis deepens

The overall air quality in the national capital remained in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/air-pollution-leading-to-10-15-spike-in-patients-with-cardiac-disease-says-doctor-262440">'severe' category</a> for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday.

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the overall air quality of the national capital docked at 505 at 7.30 am on Saturday.

"The overall Delhi AQI shot up very fast towards the higher side of Severe category mainly due to secondary particulate formation after Delhi experience slight drizzle which is always lethal as also happened in the first week of November. Although PM2.5 is recovering during the daylight, Western Disturbance induced cloudy conditions prevailing over entire northwest India may bring some isolated drizzle in Delhi to offset the day gain," SAFAR stated.

A puff of fresh air is all for what the Indian capital New Delhi is gasping for over the last 15-20 days as air quality is hovering from 'poor' to 'severe plus' category since late October. Although its effects are unproven, middle-aged and elderly residents were flocking to 'Oxygen bar', that is offering the city a 15-minute session to inhale a cocktail of oxygen in different flavours, for 500 rupees ($7).

The menace of air pollution has once again caused alarm in the national capital as air quality dipped to "severe" category on Wednesday morning and is expected to enter the 'very severe' or emergency category, according to&nbsp;overall air quality index (AQI).

In Delhi, the overall air quality index docked at 467 at 7:00 AM on Wednesday morning, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

There was no respite for residents in the National Capital Region (NCR) too as the air quality recorded in
Noida, Greater Noida and Faridabad stood at 472, 458 and 441 respectively. Visuals of thick and dense smog were observed in Delhi and its adjoining areas in the morning.&nbsp;

SAFAR also added that the air quality is expected to further deteriorate in the next two days and will fall under 'severe plus' category. The worsening situation may improve by November 15.

An AQI in the range of 201 to 300 is considered 'poor', 301-400 'very poor' and 401-500 'severe' and above 500 'severe plus'.&nbsp;

However, there was a decreasing trend in stubble burning, which is a major contributor to air pollution as per a methodology used by SAFAR.

As per officials in the weather department, Delhi witnessed a temperature of 11.7 degree Celsius on Tuesday morning, its lowest so far this season.&nbsp;

As the temperature lowers, it becomes easier for the pollutants to mix up and make the air toxic. This phenomenon results in smog, a foggy air which has the presence of pollutants.&nbsp;

As per the Central Pollution Control Bureau (CPCB), Delhi's overall AQI read 425 at 4 pm and 437 at 9 pm on Tuesday. The levels of PM 2.5, a deadly pollutant that can enter into lungs, breached the emergency mark of 300 micrograms per cubic metre and stood at 337 late on Tuesday. PM 10 was also five times higher than the safe limit of 100 micrograms per cubic metre.&nbsp;

The situation of pollution worsened in Delhi yesterday as the Delhi government lifted restrictions on the odd-even scheme due to the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. The odd-even is a rationing scheme where cars with odd and even number plates are allowed to run in the streets on alternate days.

Last week, the apex court pulled up Centre and state governments of northern Indian states for their inability to curb pollution. With the arrival of winter, the situation of air pollution worsens in northern India due to factors such as stubble burning and industrial pollution among others.

Stubble burning is a practice followed by Indian farmers where residues after harvesting are set on fire. The Supreme Court had earlier ordered a complete halt in stubble burning and announced incentives too in order to curb this menace.&nbsp;
