A 16-year-old girl was arrested in India’s national capital, Delhi after she shot and injured a 50-year-old woman and mother of a man who had allegedly raped her&nbsp;two years ago, said reports in the Hindustan Times, citing police sources.&nbsp;

The incident took place on Saturday evening after which the 50-year-old victim, later identified as Khursheeda, a resident of Subhash Mohalla in North East Delhi, was taken to the hospital, said a senior police officer.&nbsp;

The injured woman runs a grocery store. Her 25-year-old son had been accused of rape, which allegedly happened in 2021. It was during the initial investigation that the police found that the minor girl had filed an FIR against the victim’s son two years ago.&nbsp;

The Deputy Commissioner of Delhi police (northeast), Sanjay Kumar Sain, said that the police control room received a call about gunshots being fired at about 5:30 pm. “It has come to the fore that the girl had alleged that she was raped by the woman’s son in 2021, after which a case on charges of rape and under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered,” as per reports in the Hindustan Times, about the incident.&nbsp;

Additionally, they also said that after the primary treatment, Khursheeda was shifted to another hospital and legal action against the minor girl has been initiated.&nbsp;

India: 16-year-old rape survivor in Delhi shoots rapist’s mother; arrested

People on Tuesday took to streets in India's capital New Delhi protesting the non-action by the authorities on the brutal gang rape, and subsequent death, of a Dalit teenager.

The girl, allegedly raped by four upper-caste men, died of her injuries on Tuesday morning at a government hospital in New Delhi.

The 19-year-old woman was brutally assaulted at a field near her home in Hathras district --&nbsp;100 km (62-mile) from Delhi -- in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on September 14, according to a complaint filed by the family with police.

The four accused have been arrested, according to the authorities.

Found lying in a pool of blood and paralysed from injuries to her neck and spine, the woman was rushed to a local hospital before being brought to New Delhi on Monday as her condition worsened.

The news comes even as four men were hanged for the brutal gang rape and murder of a student on a bus in Delhi in 2012 -- a case which gained worldwide notoriety as the Nirbhaya case.

Famous personalities and women's rights activists took to social media to condemn this month's attack.

About 300 protesters from the Bhim Army, a party championing the rights of Dalits, entered the hospital premises and shouted slogans near the mortuary where the woman’s body was kept.

Priyanka Gandhi, a member of the opposition Congress party, blamed the assault on the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Uttar Pradesh, which is ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party.

Nearly 34,000 rapes were reported in the country in 2018 -- with one woman reporting&nbsp;a rape every 15 minutes.

Delhi police launched a formal investigation on a rape allegation on Saturday by a US woman who visited India earlier this year.

The police received a direct complaint from the woman who alleges that she was gang-raped at a plush hotel in the Indian capital.

She had contacted the police through an email by a US-based NGO but the case was registered only after the complaint from the woman.

&quot;The police have registered a case of rape and will now verify all aspects of the woman&#39;s complaint,&quot; Joint Commissioner of police Mukesh Meena told AFP.&nbsp;

The woman said that the tour guide spiked her bottle of water and raped her with four of his acquaintances inside her hotel room.

Police are now verifying the woman&#39;s timeline and tracking the suspects, including by checking security camera footage from the hotel, AFP reported.

Last month, a 35-year-old Japanese tourist was raped in southern India. Another Japanese tourist was raped last year in the western city of Jaipur, less than a month after six men gang-raped a 22-year-old Japanese tourist in the eastern city of Kolkata.

Five men were sentenced for life in June this year for or gang-raping a 52-year-old Danish tourist in New Delhi in 2014.

US woman alleges gang-rape in Delhi hotel

India&#39;s crime record bureau&#39;s data show&nbsp;Delhi recorded one of the highest number of rape cases in the country. 
 
As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data of 2015, Delhi recorded 2,199 cases of rape, 92 cases of gangrape, and 927 cases under the child sexual abuse law -- The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.&nbsp; 
 
But if one looks at the 2016 numbers, there seems to be a significant drop in crime cases against women. 
 
As per the Delhi Police data, in the first six months of 2016, accessed by DNA, there were 473 cases of rape, 18 cases of gangrapes, and 572 cases registered under the POCSO Act. 
 
There are also 709 cases of rapes under the &lsquo;others&rsquo; category, which includes cases registered under Section 377 (intercourse against order of nature), custodial rapes, etc. 
 
These figures show the highest incidences from Outer Delhi. While there were 99 rape cases, there were three gangrape cases and 136 cases under the POCSO Act. 
 
With four rapes, no gangrape cases and two cases under POCSO Act, New Delhi recorded the least number of violent incidents against women.&nbsp; 
 
That is a significant drop of over 33%. Is that because Delhi is witnessing a decrease in sexual attacks on women? 
 
After the December 2012 Delhi gang rape case, there was a sudden spurt in the number of rape cases reported in the city. The Delhi Police attributed it to proactive reporting and registration of such cases.&nbsp; 
 
A slide in numbers does not necessarily mean the national capital has become safer. To put things into perspective, rape numbers in 2013 more than doubled from previous year.&nbsp; 
 
But Delhi Police had then said the increase in numbers was a positive sign as police started recording cases verbatim. 
 
Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal said the decline in number of cases is down to poor conviction rate and less number of forensic labs in the city. She said such reasons deterred women from approaching the police.&nbsp; 
 
&ldquo;Firstly, the conviction rates in such cases are shockingly low. In 2014, out of 11,000 cases there were convictions of less than 100, as per the data furnished by the Delhi Police to the DCW. And the number of forensic labs in Delhi is abysmal; there is only one such in the entire capital,&rdquo; said Maliwal.&nbsp; 
 
She says that following a notice by the DCW, the forensic lab in Delhi, situated in Rohini, replied saying that over 1,500 of the samples in the facility in cases pertaining to rape were putrefied. &nbsp; 
 
Maliwal says that a high level committee is need of the hour. &ldquo;A committee comprising home minister Rajnath Singh, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, LG Najeeb Jung and DCW can speed up the conviction. There should be a meeting every two months,&rdquo; said Mailwal. &nbsp;
