Delhi has recorded two cases of Omicron BA.2.12.1, amid concerns&nbsp;over impending Covid fourth wave in&nbsp;India’s national capital.

India’s coronavirus genomic surveillance centre INSACOG found several samples from Delhi with Omicron variant derivative BA.2.12.1 cases, which is said to be contributing to the recent rise in cases in the capital city.

Over 300 samples were genome sequenced in the first fortnight.&nbsp;

Even though an official declaration is awaited,&nbsp;Dr Sujeet Kumar Singh, director of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), confirmed the detection of the variant in Delhi but did not divulge further.

BA.2.12.1 and BA.2.12—two subvariants of Omicron BA.2—were recently identified by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in New York and other parts of the US.

"New sub-variants BA.2.12 (52 per cent samples) and BA.2.10 (11 per cent samples) are showing high transmission and have been found in over 60 per cent of the total samples from Delhi sequenced recently,” official sources told PTI news agency.

"The BA.2.12 variant appears to have a growth advantage of about 30% to 90% per week over BA.2 (Omicron)," the source added.

Covid 4th wave in Delhi? New Omicron BA.2.12.1 sub-variant found to be causing surge in cases

The national capital Delhi and financial hub Mumbai have reported a big fall in COVID-19 infections in the past two days and most of those who contracted the virus have recovered at home, authorities said on Monday.

Mumbai's daily new infections fell below 10,000 on Sunday for the first time since early this month, after touching an all-time high of 20,971 on January&nbsp;7. It reported 7,895 infections late on Sunday, Mumbai's municipal corporation said.

Delhi's cases have fallen consistently since hitting a peak of 28,867 on Jan. 13 and is expected to be fewer than 15,000 on Monday, for the first time since early January, the city government's health minister told reporters.

Both cities have said more than 80% of their COVID-19 hospital beds have remained unoccupied since the fast-transmitting Omicron variant led to a massive surge in cases from the start of the year.

"With very large numbers of sub-clinical, asymptomatic and undetected cases, it is difficult to pinpoint a peak by new cases," Rajib Dasgupta, head of the Centre of Social Medicine &amp; Community Health at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said in an email.

"In this situation, monitoring hospitalisation is more prudent; today's case can be next week's hospitalisation."

Other epidemiologists say a national peak in cases could come by early- or mid-February.

Experts have attributed the low hospitalisations to high levels of previous infections and vaccination. India has fully vaccinated about 70% of its 939 million adults and hopes to give the primary two doses to another 70 million or so teenagers by next month.

The government has advised states to mainly ask only people with symptoms of COVID-19 to get tested instead of random checks like earlier that badly stretched resources, especially in the last major wave in April and May when millions were infected and tens of thousands died.

India’s main cities record sharp fall in Covid infections

As per the data released on Wednesday by the Union Health Ministry, India has documented 781 cases of the Omicron form of coronavirus across 21 states and UTs, with 241 people recovering or migrating.

Delhi had the most cases (238), followed by Maharashtra (167), Gujarat (73), Kerala (65), and Telangana (62).

India's total number of COVID-19 cases surged to 3,48,08,886, while the number of active cases jumped to 77,002.&nbsp;

According to the report, the death toll has risen to 4,80,592 with 302 new fatalities.

For the past 62 days, the daily increase in new coronavirus infections has been below 15,000 per day.

Active cases account for 0.22 per cent of all infections, the lowest since March 2020, according to the ministry, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was 98.40 per cent, the highest since March 2020.

In the last 24 hours, the active COVID-19 caseload has grown by 1,546 cases.&nbsp;

On August 7, 2020, India's COVID-19 tally surpassed 2 million, followed by 3 million on August 23, 4 million on September 5, and 5 million on September 16.

It exceeded the 6 million level on September 28, the 7 million mark on October 11, the 8 million mark on October 29, the 9 million mark on November 20, and the 10 million mark on December 19.

On May 4, India passed the 20 million mark, and on June 23, it passed the 30 million mark.&nbsp;

Amid a rise in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the Indian capital New Delhi, the government has imposed restrictions on certain things as a precautionary step.&nbsp;

On Tuesday (December 28), New Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced the government's decision to implement level one of the Graded Action Plan.&nbsp;

He addressed the citizen in Hindi which is loosely translated in English as: "We had written in that (Graded Action Plan) if the positivity rate is more than 0.5 per cent for two continuous days, under such circumstances it would be the Yellow Level or level one and after that, we would shut a few things."

"So, the positivity rate has been more than 0.5 per cent for the last 2-to-3 days and that is why a decision to implement level one of the Graded Action Plan has been taken. Restrictions are being imposed on certain things," he added in the video posted on his official Twitter handle.&nbsp;

As per the new restrictions, a night curfew was imposed, on the other hand, metro trains, restaurants, bars were asked to operate at 50 per cent capacity.&nbsp;

It is important to note that the capital had earlier banned Christmas and other celebrations ahead of New Year amid threats of a possible surge in coronavirus cases fueled by the Omicron variant.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the government has also planned to close cinema halls, spas, gyms, multiplexes, banquet halls, auditoriums and sports complexes under the guidelines of the Yellow alert of Graded Response Action Plan.&nbsp;

Action taken by Delhi Police

Delhi Police said that more than 4,00 FIRs were registered and 754 challans were issued for violations of Covid-appropriate behaviour during the first day of the night curfew imposed.&nbsp;

The curfew is imposed from 11 pm to 5 am and according to a data shared by the Delhi Police for Monday-Tuesday, 411 FIRs under section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 754 challans were issued to those violating Covid guidelines.

New Delhi: Indian capital imposes 'Yellow Level' restrictions amid rise in coronavirus cases

The national capital recorded 335 COVID-19 deaths in a day and 19,133 new cases even as the positivity rate dropped below 25 per cent for the first time since April 18, according to the bulletin issued by the Delhi health department on Thursday.

This is the third time in the last four days that the number of new cases remained below 20,000. Delhi had reported 20,960 cases on Wednesday, 19,953 on Tuesday, 18,043 on Monday, 20,394 cases on Sunday, 25,219 on Saturday, 27,047 on Friday, 24,235 on last Thursday and 25,986 on Wednesday last week.

At 24.29 per cent, the case positivity rate is its lowest since April 16, when it was 19.7 per cent, according to government data.

It was 24.6 percent on April 17. The national registered a positivity rate of 26.4 per cent on Wednesday, 26.73 per cent on Tuesday, 29.56 per cent on Monday, 28.33 per cent on Sunday, 31.6 per cent on Saturday, 32.7 per cent on Friday and 32.8 per cent on last Thursday. On April 22, a positivity rate of 36.2 percent, the highest so far, was recorded.

The city had witnessed 311 deaths on Wednesday, 338 on Tuesday, 448 on Monday, the highest so far; 407 on Sunday, 412 on Saturday, 375 on Friday, 395 on last Thursday and 368 on Wednesday last week. It has so far recorded 12,73,035 cases, of which over 11.64 lakh have recovered.

The death toll due to the viral disease stands at 18,398, the bulletin said.

Battling the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Delhi has left financial capital Mumbai far behind in the daily tally of cases, becoming the worst-affected city in the country.

On Wednesday, the positivity rate was 15.92 per cent.

A total of 82,569 tests, 59,401 RT-PCR and 23,168 rapid antigen were conducted in the city on Tuesday, the latest health bulletin showed.

The number of cumulative cases on Thursday stood at 7,84,137. Over 7.18 lakh patients have recovered from the virus.

The number of active cases has increased to 54,309 from 50,736 a day before, as per the bulletin.

The number of people under home-isolation increased to 26,974 from 24,155 on Wednesday while the number of containment zones mounted to 8,661 from 7,598 a day before, the bulletin said.&nbsp;

Battling the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Delhi has left financial capital Mumbai far behind in the daily tally of cases, becoming the worst-affected city in the country. The report which is submitted to the Delhi government said that fatality rate in the national capital is 1.9 per cent which is more than the national average of 1.5 per cent and needs to be brought down further for controlling the pandemic.&nbsp;

It also expected a lot of patients outside Delhi coming to the city for treatment, which can stress the health system. Patients who are arriving from far away areas are expected to be more serious, the report noted.&nbsp;

It recommended that the government makes arrangements for hospitalisation of one-fifth of these 15,000 people, taking into account severe and moderate cases.&nbsp;

It has also urged the government to control gatherings in view of the festive season.&nbsp;
