The alternative makes use of a unique strain of yeast called metschnikowia pulcherrima, or MP. As per Chris Chuck, professor of bioprocess engineering at the University of Bath, who along with his team is behind the innovation, MP is not fussy and can be fed grass and food waste.

While traditional palm oil production takes around seven years, ‘palmless’ reportedly takes “less than seven days from start to finish”.

Accounting for over 40 per cent of the world’s vegetable oil usage, Palm oil continues to dominate the market. The tasteless, colourless and odourless oil is equally popular with cosmetic makers and food companies. It owes its popularity to the fact that it doesn’t change the taste or look of the product but instead acts as a natural preservative.

What’s problematic about its usage is the widely documented and significant deforestation it leads to. The tree can grow in low-lying, hot, humid areas near the equator, 85 per cent of which is in Indonesia and Malaysia, areas home to endangered species like the Orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino.

In 2020, 28.7 million hectares of land were in use for palm oil conservation, a nine-fold increase from 3.3 million hectares in 1970.

As per BBC, Ticku, the person behind C16 Biosciences, got the idea for Palmless back in 2013, when on a visit to Singapore she was forced to wear a mask due to the toxic air because of Indonesia’s burning rainforests.

Three of the world’s largest central banks have been accused of financing agri-business giants that are engaged in the destruction of the climate change-sensitive Amazon rainforest in Brazil, a report published on Wednesday claimed.

These three central banks— Bank of England, the US Federal Reserve and the European Central— have purchased millions of dollars in bonds issued by the companies linked to deforestation and land-grabbing, says a report called ‘Bankrolling Destruction’, published by the rights group Global Witness.

“Because these programmes are guaranteed by the respective governments in the UK, the US and EU Member States, this means taxpayers throughout those territories are unwittingly underwriting companies engaged in the destruction of the Amazon and other rainforests,” the report said.

The report has named three big agri-businesses operating in Brazil engaging in deforestation and that have sold bonds to the banks. These are: Cargill, Inc., the Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM) and Bunge Ltd Financial Corp.

It has claimed that the Bank of England, since 2016, “purchased an undisclosed share in a £150m corporate bond issued by Cargill, Inc.”, while the European Central Bank bought an “undisclosed amount of debt issued by Bunge Finance Europe BV.”

And the US Federal Reserve, in the last two years, has bought bonds worth $16m issued by the Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM) Bunge Ltd Financial Corp, and Cargill, Inc.

“All this comes despite the repeated public statements from all three central banks stressing the risks that climate change poses to financial stability and long-term economic growth,” the report noted.

Responding to the allegations, Cargill clarified that it was “committed to ending deforestation and conversion in our agricultural supply chains” while Bunge stated it was “committed to complying with all regulations either in local or global markets and to adhering to our own strict social-environmental policies,”&nbsp;reports The Guardian.&nbsp;ADM, on the other hand, has refused to comment.

In a Facebook post, Bakar said the authorities could not “promise what we can’t do”.

“The massive development of President Jokowi’s era must not stop in the name of carbon emissions or in the name of deforestation,” she said, referring to Widodo by his nickname.

“Indonesia’s natural wealth, including forests, must be managed for its use according to sustainable principles, besides being fair,” she said.

The deal was announced on Monday at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. It was the event’s first major announcement.

Indonesia is home to the world’s third-largest expanse of tropical forest cover, but rampant deforestation since the 1960s has seen half of the country’s forests cut down by illegal loggers and to make way for commercial plantations such as palm oil.

There are 142 species already extinct, while 442 others are teetering on the brink, with fewer than 50 trees remaining in the wild.

Clearance for crop production (affecting 29 per cent), logging (27 per cent), clearance for livestock grazing or farming (14 per cent), clearing for development (13 per cent) and fire (13 per cent) are the top threats for trees worldwide.

The report, said Rivers, lays out a road map to mobilise the conservation community and other players to ensure that tree conservation is a high priority in conservation agendas.
