Manchester United great Cristiano Ronaldo bashes Ten Hag for 'negative mindset', urges club for overhaul

Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo has backed current Real Madrid star and Frenchman Kylian Mbappe to win the Ballon d’Or in the future. Speaking on his newly launched YouTube channel on Tuesday (Sep 10), Ronaldo backed the 2018 World Cup winner to be a success at the Spanish club. While Mbappe is nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, Ronaldo missed out on nomination for the first time since 2006 after an announcement was made last week.

"I think [Mbappé] will do well. The structure of the club ... it's nice, it's good," Ronaldo said on his newly-launched YouTube channel.

"They have a great coach and the president, Florentino [Pérez], who has been there many many years. I think it won't be a big problem because of his talent. Mbappé can be the next golden ball [Ballon d'Or] winner. Him, [Erling] Haaland, [Jude] Bellingham, Lamine [Yamal]," he added.

The 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or was released last week with Ronaldo and Lionel Messi missing out on nomination for the first time since 2003. The Portugal star, now playing in Saudi Pro League (SPL) has backed Mbappe to shine having made a summer move to Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain.

While he failed to score in his opening two La Liga matches, the striker has since scored for Los Blancos. He scored on his club debut against Atalanta in August in the UEFA Super Cup.

While Ronaldo predicts Mbappe to win the Ballon d’Or, it is hard to make a case this season with a host of star names in the running. Nations League: Cristiano Ronaldo's 901st career goal sees Portugal through vs Scotland

Spain were held by Serbia in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday in their first game since winning Euro 2024, while Cristiano Ronaldo reached another milestone by scoring his 900th career goal as Portugal beat Croatia. Eight of Spain's starting line-up in their Euro 2024 final victory over England almost two months ago were on the field at kick-off against Serbia in Belgrade.

Among them was Lamine Yamal, with the Barcelona prodigy just one of the Spain players to be denied by home goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic. Luis de la Fuente's team are also the reigning Nations League champions having won the most recent edition of the tournament last year.

They will now hope to register their first victory in League A, Group 4 when they travel to face Switzerland in Geneva on Sunday. The Swiss lost 2-0 to Denmark on Thursday, with Patrick Dorgu and captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scoring late goals for the home side in Copenhagen.

Switzerland finished the match with nine men as both Nico Elvedi and Granit Xhaka were sent off in the second half. In Lisbon, Ronaldo's 900th career goal proved to be the winner as 2019 Nations League champions Portugal edged Croatia 2-1 in Group A1.

Ronaldo, 39, put behind him a disappointing Euro 2024 in which he failed to score as he turned in a Nuno Mendes cross in the 34th minute at the Estadio da Luz to reach the landmark. He appeared emotional as he celebrated the goal, his 131st in a Portugal shirt. Half of his goals were scored for Real Madrid, with the remainder spread across his spells at Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United and current club Al-Nassr.

Diogo Dalot's goal had put Portugal in front early on before Ronaldo netted, with a Dalot own-goal reducing the deficit before the break.

- Scotland lose to Poland -

Portugal next host Scotland, who lost 3-2 to Poland at Hampden Park, with the visitors grabbing the victory thanks to a 97th-minute Nicola Zalewski penalty. Poland had been 2-0 up as Sebastian Szymanski gave them an early lead and captain Robert Lewandowski added a penalty just before the break.

However, Billy Gilmour pulled one back for League A newcomers Scotland moments after the restart, and Scott McTominay equalised before Roma's Zalewski sneaked his spot-kick under Angus Gunn deep into stoppage time.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Slovakia and Northern Ireland in League C, while Sweden -- now being coached by Jon Dahl Tomasson -- beat Azerbaijan 3-1 away in Baku with Newcastle United's Alexander Isak netting twice.

Ronaldo makes bold statement

'Winning Euros with Portugal is like winning the WC': Cristiano Ronaldo makes bold revelation after 900th goal

Lionel Messi will not win another Ballon d'Or this year after being left out of the nominees revealed by organisers on Wednesday, as stars of Spain's Euro 2024-winning team and Real Madrid's Champions League victors feature heavily. Messi claimed the eighth Ballon d'Or of his glittering career last year. Now aged 37, he is not among the 30 contenders this time despite winning another title with Argentina at the Copa America in July.

The former Barcelona supestar, now playing club football in MLS for Inter Miami, was also missing from the nominees in 2022 when Karim Benzema took the honours. However, he returned to win last year after leading Argentina to glory at the World Cup in Qatar.

The most prestigious individual award in football is voted for by a jury of journalists from each of the top 100 countries in FIFA's world ranking.

Brazil forward Vinicius Junior is among the favourites and is one of six members of the Madrid team that won La Liga and the Champions League last season to be nominated.

Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Toni Kroos, Antonio Ruediger and Fede Valverde are the others, while Kylian Mbappe -- who left Paris Saint-Germain for Real over the close season -- features too.

Carvajal is among the contenders from the victorious Spain team alongside Alejandro Grimaldo, Dani Olmo, Rodri, Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal.

Manchester City's Norwegian star Erling Haaland and England and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane are on the list as well, but there is no place for five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo, now 39. Xabi Alonso, who won the Bundesliga in an unbeaten season with Bayer Leverkusen, is among the favourites for best coach.

His rivals include Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti and Spain's Luis de la Fuente. Meanwhile, Aitana Bonmati of Barcelona and Spain will hope to retain the women's Ballon d'Or.

Former winners Ada Hegerberg and Alexia Putellas are also nominated, along with five members of the United States' Olympic gold medal-winning team in Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, Lindsey Horan and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. The Ballon d'Or ceremony is due to take place in Paris on October 28.

Legendary Portugal defender Pepe announces retirement at 41

Theo Hernandez scored the winning kick as Kylian Mbappe's France edged a tense Euro 2024 quarter-final clash with Portugal 5-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes on Friday in what will likely be remembered as Cristiano Ronaldo's last-ever match at the tournament.

France were successful with all their penalties as they advance to a last-four showdown with Spain, while Portugal's Joao Felix was the only player to miss, sending his team's third kick against the post.

It was overdue success in a shoot-out for France after they lost the 2022 World Cup final on penalties to Argentina and went out of the last Euros three years ago in the same way, against Switzerland in the last 16.

They also lost on penalties in the last major tournament in Germany, going down to Italy in the final of the 2006 World Cup.

Mbappe, who missed the crucial kick against the Swiss, was already off the pitch by the time this shoot-out came around, having been replaced by Bradley Barcola midway through extra time.

Barcola, Ousmane Dembele, Youssouf Fofana and Jules Kounde also scored from the spot for France.

"I am proud of my players. Even if we are not doing everything perfectly, we don't give up," said France coach Didier Deschamps. "Once again we are in the semi-finals. I will savour this a little even if we have another game coming up."

Mbappe endured a frustrating evening as he continues to search for his best form in the competition but appears inhibited while wearing a mask to protect the nose he broke against Austria in France's opening game.

At least he will get another chance to star in the semi-final, while Ronaldo, at 39, appears to have played at a Euros for the last time.

This has been his sixth European Championship, but he failed to add to his tournament record tally of 14 goals in Germany after misfiring in all of Portugal's five matches.

He scored his penalty, Portugal's first, but Roberto Martinez's team go out having failed to find the net in over six hours of football.

They beat Slovenia on penalties in the last 16 after a goalless draw, but this time fell short in what was a disappointing game in Hamburg.

"In the same way that it was maybe cruel for Slovenia in the last 16, today it was cruel for us. That's football," Bernardo Silva told CNN.

Neither of these teams had played anywhere close to their potential in their previous games at the tournament, but especially France, who have got this far without any of their players scoring a goal in open play.

Frustrating night for Mbappe

Randal Kolo Muani and Eduardo Camavinga came into the France line-up, while Antoine Griezmann was deployed as a number 10 behind the attackers.

France have been happy to sit off teams and rely on an excellent defence, while also struggling to play with any real intensity when in possession.

ALSO READ: Euro 2024: Spain continue flawless run to knockout hosts Germany; Kroos drops curtains on illustrious career Mbappe, who missed the crucial kick against the Swiss, was already off the pitch by the time this shoot-out came around, having been replaced by Bradley Barcola midway through extra time. I will savour this a little even if we have another game coming up." Mbappe endured a frustrating evening as he continues to search for his best form in the competition but appears inhibited while wearing a mask to protect the nose he broke against Austria in France's opening game. Frustrating night for Mbappe Randal Kolo Muani and Eduardo Camavinga came into the France line-up, while Antoine Griezmann was deployed as a number 10 behind the attackers. France have been happy to sit off teams and rely on an excellent defence, while also struggling to play with any real intensity when in possession. They had less of the ball in this game, a contest which never caught fire but did briefly come to life in the second half. Portugal began to cause problems with runners getting into the box from midfield, first when Bruno Fernandes had a shot saved by Mike Maignan just after the hour mark.
After seeing the match move into extra time as both Portugal and Slovenia could not score in normal time, Ronaldo was presented with an opportunity to win the match. However, presented the opportunity, the 39-year-old missed his penalty with Slovenia captain and goalkeeper Jan Oblak guessing the right way.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia helped Georgia beat tournament-favourites Portugal 2-0 on Wednesday (Jun 26) at the European Championship 2024 after scoring in the second minute of the match. The Napoli star, who is a childhood Cristiano Ronaldo fan, beat his idol on the biggest footballing stage but remained awestruck by the Portuguese. While most Georgian players ran onto the pitch after the final whistle, Kvaratskhelia went straight to Ronaldo to hug him and later got his jersey as well. "I got Ronaldo's jersey and we've made it through to the next round. This is the best day in the lives of Georgian football fans. We've made history, no one would believe we'd make it happen," said Kvaratskhelia. "No one would believe we could beat Portugal but that's why we're a strong team; if there's even a one per cent chance, we've shown we can make it happen," he added. Why did Frank Lampard avoid Cristiano Ronaldo? Former Chelsea player reveals

Youngster Francisco Conceicao snatched Portugal a last-gasp 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in their Euro 2024 Group F opener on Tuesday just minutes after coming off the bench.

The 21-year-old Porto winger capitalised from close range after the Czechs were unable to clear a cross, completing his team's comeback.

The Czechs went ahead against the run of play through Lukas Provod's fine strike from the edge of the box after the hour mark.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal did not shine but dug just deep enough to claim victory, with Robin Hranac's own goal pulling them level before Conceicao's dramatic winner.

Ronaldo, 39, playing at a record-extending sixth European Championship, was denied by Stanek on three occasions as Portugal constantly looked to find the competition's all-time top goalscorer.

The striker hit the post with the score tied and Diogo Jota nodded in the rebound but the goal was disallowed for offside against Ronaldo.

"We showed all our coolness and resilience," said Portugal midfielder Vitinha.

"We remained calm, got the draw and always believed until the end to get the win.

"Luckily we managed to do it with the help of the players who came on... we are truly a team."

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez selected 41-year-old defender Pepe, who became the oldest player in Euros history, beating the record set by Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly aged 40 in 2016, as part of a three centre-back defence.

Portugal won that tournament in 2016 to claim the trophy for the first time and captain Ronaldo said they deserve another, although they got off to a stuttering start in Germany.

In coach Ivan Hasek's first competitive game after taking over in January, the Czech Republic largely frustrated Martinez's side, who qualified unbeaten while scoring more goals than any other team.

Ronaldo sent an effort wide with his shoulder after Rafael Leao cut inside with menace early on, as the Portuguese controlled the ball.

Youngster Francisco Conceicao snatched Portugal a last-gasp 2-1 win over the Czech Republic in their Euro 2024 Group F opener on Tuesday just minutes after coming off the bench.

"Luckily we managed to do it with the help of the players who came on... we are truly a team." Portugal coach Roberto Martinez selected 41-year-old defender Pepe, who became the oldest player in Euros history, beating the record set by Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly aged 40 in 2016, as part of a three centre-back defence. Bruno Fernandes' deflected dipping effort had some Portugal fans out of their seats and Leao was inches away from connecting with a low cross from the Manchester United playmaker. Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek thwarted Ronaldo twice in the first half of his record 26th Euros appearance, but on both occasions the striker appeared marginally offside. The Al Nassr hitman's brightest moment came with a clever backheel which played in Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Vitinha, but the Czech defence swarmed around him quickly and blocked his shot. Debate over whether Ronaldo should still be a starter or not has rumbled on since the 2022 World Cup and at times Portugal looked short on ideas beyond slinging crosses in towards him. Euro 2024: Francisco Conceicao's stoppage time winner helps Portugal down Czechs in group opener

It was a night of drama in the Euro 2024 on Tuesday (June 18) as Portugal snatched a late winner to start proceedings in Group F as they beat Czechia 2-1. A game in which Cristiano Ronaldo’s side trailed until the final 20 minutes saw them roll their sleeves and mount an amazing comeback as Francisco Conceicao scored the winning goal in the 93rd minute with his first meaningful touch of the match. But who is Francisco Conceicao and why is he considered the next big thing in football?

Francisco Conceicao makes headlines

Hailing from a very influential football family in Portugal, Conceicao emerged from Porto’s famous youth academy before bursting onto the scene at club level. Born in December 2022, Conceicao was part of Sporting Lisbon’s academy until 2018 when he decided to swap Lisbon for Porto. One of the major reasons for this was his father Sergio’s appointment as Porto’s senior team’s head coach who brought the youngster along with him.

He made his first team debut for Porto in 2021 when he played against Benfica as a substitute. He was handed his debut by his father at that time which was a proud moment for the duo. He wore the No.10 shirt for the 2021-22 season, a hallmark of any football team’s best player. However, he failed to impress in his first spell before being sold to the Dutch side Ajax. He spent a year in the Netherlands capital before returning to Portugal on loan.

Conceicao was handed back the No.10 shirt as he showcased his talent yet again for the side earning applause from the national team manager. His deal was made permanent ahead of the 2023-24 season having already won the Liga Portugal and the Portugal Cup.

International stint

Sergio Conceicao, Francisco’s father scored at the Euro 2000 for the national side and he followed in his footsteps on Tuesday when the latter scored against Czechia. Having been a regular at youth levels, Conceicao represented under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-21 levels before making his debut for the senior side in 2024.

Euro 2024: Who is Cristiano Ronaldo's teammate Francisco Conceicao, Portugal's match-winning hero vs Czechia?

Ahead of Portugal's opening Euro 2024 match against Czechia, the official FIFA World Cup Instagram handle paid tribute to Indian cricketer MS Dhoni and Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo using the common link that binds the two superstars.

Both Dhoni and Ronaldo have been the legends of their respective sports and contributed immensely to the success of their national teams. The similarities do not stop here as both wear the iconic no. 7 on their jerseys.

FIFA used the 'Thala for a reason' phrase that is often used in popular culture by the fans of the cricketer to associate it with Ronaldo who wears the same-numbered jersey. 'Thala' (Tamil word for 'head' or 'leader') is what fans call Dhoni affectionately.

Ronaldo's last dance

While Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, Ronaldo is still going strong at the young age of 39. The Portuguese star has said he is lucky to be able to represent his country at the top stage and making every moment count in the final essay of his career.

"I know I don't have many years of football left," Ronaldo said in the lead-up to the Euros.

"It's a gift to play year after year, after 35. I'm 39 and every year is about enjoying [myself]. To score for the national team is special. The national team is the love of my life, winning the Euros would be a dream."

The Portuguese is the leading goal scorer in men’s international football with 128 goals in 204 official matches. He will be playing his final Euros, having featured in six previous editions, winning one (2016) and finishing runners-up (2004) in another.

There has been suspense around Mbappe’s kit number and he is likely succeeding his idols Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Mbappe to wear No.9?

According to several reports, Mbappe will don the No.9 kit at Real Madrid after it was revealed that Luka Modric will continue for another year. This meant that Modric would continue to wear No.10 for the 2024-25 season while Mbappe could be handed the vacant No.9 at the club. The number is generally taken by an attacker that suits Mbappe for at least a season before he can take over the coveted No.10 from Modric.

The number was once donned by Mbappe’s idol Cristiano Ronaldo while his countryman Karim Benzema was the last player to wear the famous number. Interestingly, like Mbappe, Ronaldo also took the shirt number temporarily in the 2009-10 season with club legend Raul Gonzalez then wearing No.7.

It is expected that after the 2024-25 season, Modric will announce his retirement from club football which will pave the way for the French superstar to take the number.

Cristiano Ronaldo greets Kylian Mbappe after Real Madrid switch, texts 'excited to see you light up Bernabeu'

Legendary footballer Cristiano Ronaldo was seen in tears on Friday (May 31) evening after his Al-Nassr side lost in the King of Champion Cup final against arch-rivals Al-Hilal on penalties. Ronaldo, known for his sheer passion for his game, was consoled by several players as Al-Nassr were beaten 5-4 on penalties while the game had initially finished 1-1 after extra time. Video of Ronaldo crying in the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia was making rounds on the internet with fans showing sympathy to the Portugal superstar.

Ronaldo in tears

Having finished runners-up in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) to Al-Hilal, Ronaldo’s side still had an opportunity to close the season with silverware as they took on Al-Hilal. However, failing to capitalise on the opportunity during the match and ultimately losing in the penalty shootout left Ronaldo in tears. He was seen emotional after losing the final, despite having won top honours in world football. Ronaldo’s hunger and emotions were clearly visible in losing a national cup final despite having a trophy cabinet which includes Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Serie A and Club World Cup medals.

His side needed a late show to come back into the match having trailed for the majority of the 90 minutes. Former Fulham striker Alexander Mitrovic had given Al-Hilal a valuable lead in the seventh minute and looked on course for the Cup before Al-Nassr’s Ayman Yahya equalised just two minutes before the 90th minute.

Incredibly, Al-Nassr played the majority of the second half with 10 men after former Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina was sent off in the 56th minute. However, it was Al-Hilal who ended with fewer players on the pitch when Ali Albulayhi and Kalidou Koulibaly were sent off in quick succession towards the end of the match.

No luck for Ronaldo

There was no luck for Ronaldo and Co, however, who scored four times in the shootout but could not prevent Al-Hilal from completing a League and Cup double. Last week Al-Hilal lifted the SPL trophy with a record points tally of 96 in 34 matches. They finished the league season unbeaten and dropped points in only three matches. In 34 matches, Al-Hilal won 31 and drew three in one of the greatest league seasons in the history of club football. Coach Jorge Jesus was rewarded with a new contract as a result earlier in the week.

For Ronaldo, the attention now turns to the UEFA Euro 2024 where he will lead Portugal in Germany and will try to clinch his third international trophy with the side.

Cristiano Ronaldo has created history again, this time in the Saudi Pro League. The Portuguese scored two goals during his team Al-Nassr's last game of the season and took his tally to 35 goals in the season - the most by a player in the Saudi league. Courtesy of Ronaldo's goals, his team capped off the season with a 4-2 victory over Al-Ittihad.

The previous record for most goals in a Saudi Pro League season was 34, set by former Al-Nassr and Morocco player Abderrazak Hamdallah in the 2018-19 season. This was also Ronaldo's first full season at Al-Nassr after joining the league early last year. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored four hattricks in the season as well.

For his goals on Monday (May 27), Ronaldo had to wait a bit longer after two of his goals were deemed offside early in the first half. He scored his first one of the night in the final second of the first 45 minutes, thanks to a long pass from Mohammed Al-Fatil.

The 39-year-old scored his second goal in the second half with 21 minutes remaining in the game. He celebrated the achievement wildly before being substituted for the rest of the game five minutes later. Have a look at the goal here:

Al-Nassr's coach Jorge Jesus also praised the legendary footballer and said: "This season has been truly exceptional for the team, arguably our best ever. The credit goes to the immense talent within the squad and the incredible sense of unity that transcends both on and off-field interactions."

The season, however, remained a disappointing one for Al-Nassr despite individual brilliance from Ronaldo. They not only failed to win the trophy but also finished a distant second with 82 points, behind eventual winners Al-Hilal (96 points in 34 games).
