Former South African cricketer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=ab+de+villiers">AB de Villiers</a> had offered the team management to come out of his international retirement to participate in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">Cricket World Cup 2019</a>.

However, the offer was denied as the selectors had already finalised the 15-member squad for the World Cup, which is underway in England and Wales.&nbsp;

De Villiers made the offer 24 hours before the final squad was announced, reported ESPNcricinfo.&nbsp;

The report further added that de Villiers approached South Africa's captain Faf du Plessis, head coach Ottis Gibson but his request was "not even considered".&nbsp;

The relevance of this report became significant after the Proteas have suffered their third consecutive loss in the World Cup.&nbsp;

South Africa lost to hosts England by 104 runs, then slipped to a 21-run loss to Bangladesh and on Wednesday, they were defeated by India&nbsp;by six wickets.&nbsp;

Last year in May, AB De Villiers<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/twitterati-raise-concern-over-ab-de-villiers-retirement-decision--139217"> announced his retirement</a> via a video post on his Twitter account.&nbsp;

For the tournament, the team will wear a special jersey, which was launched in March.&nbsp;

The kit makers&nbsp;have emblazoned dates of India's past World Cup triumphs - which are the ODI World Cups in 1983 and 2011, and the T20 World Cup win in 2007 - behind the back of collar.&nbsp;

Ahead of the World Cup, Team India donned the jersey for the first time in five-match home series against Australia.&nbsp;

Besides, the team is also likely to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/orange-to-be-new-blue-team-india-to-sport-alternate-jersey-in-selected-world-cup-matches-224232">sport orange jerseys instead of the usual blue</a> in selected games, including the one against hosts England on June 30.&nbsp;

The jersey, which will be predominantly orange with a tinge of blue, will be unveiled during the course of the tournament.

Nuwan Pradeep and Lasith Malinga starred with the ball as Sri Lanka fought back to crush Afghanistan's hopes of a memorable World Cup victory on Tuesday.

Afghanistan, bidding for just their second win in a World Cup match and their first over a Test nation were in command halfway through a gloomy day in Cardiff after dismissing Sri Lanka for 201,.

But faced with a rain-revised target of 187 in 41 overs, their batting let them down again as they were bowled out for 152.

Victory saw Sri Lanka bounce back from a 10-wicket thrashing by New Zealand in their World Cup opener.

Pradeep took a career-best four for 31, while Malinga (three for 39) struck at both ends of the innings, finishing the match with a trademark yorker that bowled Hamid Hassan.

Afghanistan had slumped to 57 for five, with Thisara Perera holding a brilliant running catch in the deep to dismiss Hazratullah Zazai on the hook for 30.

Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib (23) and Najibullah Zadran (43) then started to turn the match again with a sixth-wicket stand of 64.

But paceman Pradeep struck twice, having Naib lbw before bowling Rashid Khan to leave Afghanistan 123 for seven.

And when Najibullah was run out by a direct hit from Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne, Afghanistan were all but beaten at nine down.

Earlier, Sri Lanka came out of the blocks quickly against the unfancied Afghans, who suffered a seven-wicket loss to champions Australia in their tournament opener, and were set for an imposing total at 144 for one.

But they lost their last nine wickets for 57 runs, Mohammad Nabi taking three in five balls after Gulbadin won the toss.

Shell-shocked Sri Lanka kept on&nbsp;losing wickets at regular intervals, with 35 extras the second-highest scorer of the innings behind Kusal Perera's 78.

A dramatic 22nd over saw Nabi bowled Lahiru Thirimanne for 25 before having Kusal Mendis caught by Rahmat Shah in the slips for two.&nbsp;

Angelo Mathews was next to go, for a duck, also caught by Shah.

Leg-spinner Rashid Khan eventually got in on the act when he had opener Kusal Perera, who had seen wickets tumble at the other end, caught behind.

Rain then intervened, forcing the players from the field,&nbsp;with Sri Lanka 182-8.

The delay meant the match was reduced to 41 overs a side but Sri Lanka folded quickly after the resumption, losing Malinga and Pradeep for the addition of just 19 more runs.

Afghanistan, playing in only their second World Cup, beat Sri Lanka soundly in last year's Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates, but for the second match in a row this World Cup their batting let them down.

Watch: Quinton de Kock's stunning catch that dismissed India's Virat Kohli in World Cup

India launched their World Cup campaign with a six-wicket win over South Africa at Southampton on Wednesday as the Proteas suffered their third defeat in as many matches this tournament.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and batted but a superb double strike by Jasprit Bumrah left his side reeling.&nbsp;

India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal then took four wickets in a meagre total of 227 for nine.

India, with Rohit Sharma, dropped early in an innings of 122 not out -- the highest individual score of the tournament to date -- took their time over the chase before winning with 15 balls to spare.

Earlier, Indian wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal took four wickets as one of the pre-tournament favourites got their Cricket World Cup campaign off to a confident start by restricting South Africa to 227 for nine at a vibrant Rose Bowl on Wednesday.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss in bright sunshine and elected to bat first. However, the clouds closed in and seamer Jasprit Bumrah (2-35) found prodigious movement in both directions to remove openers Hashim Amla (6) and Quinton de Kock (10) inside the first six overs.

Du Plessis (38) and Rassie van der Dussen (22) put on a patient 54 in 80 balls in a bid to rebuild the innings, but when the latter was bowled trying a reverse-sweep off Chahal (4-51), two more wickets fell in quick succession.

Chahal then bowled Du Plessis and left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav trapped JP Duminy (3) leg before wicket as India's slow bowlers squeezed the run-rate and bamboozled the batsmen.

David Miller (31) and Andile Phehlukwayo (34) got starts but could not pass 50, while Chris Morris (42) and Kagiso Rabada (31 not out) put on 66 for the eighth wicket to ensure the side posted a score that gives them a chance.

The innings mirrored South Africa's World Cup campaign to date as their batsmen struggled to find form or fluency on wickets that were good for striking. They have lost their opening two matches to England and Bangladesh, while India are playing their first game.

India launched their World Cup campaign with a six-wicket win over South Africa at Southampton on Wednesday as the Proteas suffered their third defeat in as many matches this tournament.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and batted but a superb double strike by Jasprit Bumrah left his side reeling. India beat South Africa by six wickets in Cricket World Cup

Virat Kohli-led Team India will start their 2019 World Cup campaign against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/key-players-in-india-vs-south-africa-world-cup-clash-224311">South Africa today at Southampton</a>.&nbsp;

All the participating teams have played at least one match in the ongoing edition and now the 'Men in Blue' will begin their quest to win the World Cup for the third time.&nbsp;

South Africa, on the other hand, have had a disappointing start in the World Cup, losing both matches they have played so far. They lost to hosts England by 104 runs, then slipped to a 21-run loss to Bangladesh on Sunday. &nbsp;

It couldn't get worse for captain Faf du Plessis after star pacers Dale Steyn and Lungi Ngidi suffered injuries. &nbsp;

Ngidi will back in the squad within the next 10 days but legendary fast bowler Steyn has been ruled out of the tournament after failing to recover from a&nbsp;shoulder injury.&nbsp;

India, however, are fresh and are all geared up for their campaign opener. &nbsp;

India will be&nbsp;starting their campaign late but skipper Virat Kohli termed it as team's "advantage" as the players are well aware of the conditions and pitch&nbsp;behaviour.&nbsp;

Conditions:&nbsp;

The forecast suggests that Southampton will be cloudy and there could be light showers but chances of a downpour are very less. However, it had rained here a day earlier, so the Indian cricket fans will be keeping their fingers crossed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Overall, the conditions suggest that it is going to be a batting-friendly match, similar to what we have seen in the last ODI contest at this venue&nbsp;between England and Pakistan in which 734 runs were scored in 100 overs.&nbsp;

Head-to-head:&nbsp;

India and South Africa's ODI rivalry has a long history considering the number of matches they have played together. &nbsp;

Both the team have played a total of 83 ODI matches, India have won 34 and South Africa has emerged victorious in 46 games.&nbsp;

Three matches have ended without any result.&nbsp;

In World Cups, both the teams have met four times and South Africa have won thrice. &nbsp;

But since 2012, India has defeated South Africa in all five ICC events (not bilateral series) they have played which includes the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophy, in 2012 and 2014 World T20 and in the 2015 World Cup.&nbsp;

World Cup: Indian team attends practice session ahead of South Africa challenge

As <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/virat-kohli-and-team-attends-practice-session-ahead-of-south-africa-challenge-224017">Indian team gears up for its first match</a> in the ongoing Cricket World Cup, Men in Blue's lethal pacer Jasprit Bumrah was taken for a doping test on Monday.

Dope control official took the pacer for conducting a test during the team's practice session at the Rose Bowl stadium in Southampton.

There were a total of two sittings in the test. In the first round, Bumrah was taken for a urine test and after 45 minutes, the blood sample of the pacer was taken.

Under every ICC event, every Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) player has to undergo a doping test conducted by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

A BCCI source confirmed that Bumrah was indeed taken for a doping test.

However, the source did not reveal whether any other player is scheduled to undergo a doping test.

There is something about ICC World Cups where inevitably the relationship between Indian media and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/virat-kohli-and-team-attends-practice-session-ahead-of-south-africa-challenge-224017">the national team</a> becomes frosty.&nbsp;

It wasn't great during the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the start seemed to have been on a discordant note during this edition as well after the Indian media contingent decided to boycott an interaction session with net bowlers Deepak Chahar, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed.&nbsp;

With two days left for India's first game against South Africa, it was expected that at least coach Ravi Shastri or a senior player or support staff would address the media as it has been the norm in any bilateral series with skipper Virat Kohli coming on the pre-match day.&nbsp;

Also Read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jasprit-bumrah-undergoes-doping-test-224018">Jasprit Bumrah undergoes doping test</a>

However, to everyone's disbelief, Indian team's media manager informed the waiting journalists that since Chahar and Avesh are going back on Tuesday (Khaleel is staying back), it was felt that they should get an opportunity to interact with the media.&nbsp;

Livid with decision, senior members of the fraternity protested vehemently to this outrageous idea and he was told that if the team wants to cancel the session, they are free to do so as it is unfair both for the media as well as the two youngsters, who don't have any authority to answer team related queries.&nbsp;

When asked why no player or support staff was made available, the media manager said that it was done since India haven't started its World Cup campaign yet.&nbsp;

The logic didn't seem convincing as it has never happened two days before a marquee event. It seemed more like a case where the Indian media was being told that you have to make do with whatever we make available for you.&nbsp;

This seemed to be in complete contrast with the relationship that the jumbo Bangladeshi media share with their 'Tigers' or even the handful of Pakistani journalists with their players.&nbsp;

Many were reminded of the 2015 World Cup, when there was a complete gag on media save pre and post-match days and skipper Dhoni would come for every post-match interaction instead of day's performer, who would be interviewed by the official BCCI website.&nbsp;

Cricket World Cup 2019: Media boycotts interaction session with Indian cricket team

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said his struggling side could still reach the World Cup semi-finals, even after talisman paceman Dale Steyn was ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury.

The 35-year-old fast bowler had been battling to be fit in time for Wednesday's crucial clash against fancied India in Southampton after two defeats in two matches for South Africa.

But the seamer has been forced to admit defeat, leaving head coach Ottis Gibson's side short of firepower.

"Steyn has suffered a second shoulder injury which has not responded to treatment and has ruled him out of bowling for the foreseeable future," Cricket South Africa said in a statement.

South Africa have called up left-arm pace bowler Beuran Hendricks as a replacement for the remainder of the tournament, with Lungi Ngidi also nursing a hamstring problem.

In pics: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/key-players-in-india-vs-south-africa-world-cup-clash-224311">Key players in India vs South Africa World Cup clash</a>

Paceman Anrich Nortje was ruled out with a thumb issue before the World Cup even started.

But Du Plessis said despite their injury problems and their poor start to the tournament, South Africa were aiming to reach the last four of the round-robin event, in which all 10 teams play each other.

"Six games is the target, and there's seven games left," the skipper told reporters during his pre-match press conference at the Ageas Bowl.

"It would be great if we could start that tomorrow. There's no easy games any more in the World Cup.... Whether it's winning or losing, the main thing is getting to the semi-finals."

South Africa, who have never won the World Cup, have endured a wretched start to the tournament, losing to hosts England by 104 runs then slipping to a 21-run loss to Bangladesh on Sunday.

Top-order batsman Hashim Amla returns for the India game after missing the second match following a hit on the head during the tournament opener against England.

Stay positive

Du Plessis said he it was important to stay "strong and positive" despite the challenge of working with limited resources.

"Naturally, guys will have a little bit of confidence that's been chucked away and that is normal, that is part of being human," he said.

Hendricks will arrive on Wednesday but will not be available to face India.

Du Plessis said he hoped Steyn's international career was not at an end.

"It's been a tough two-and-half years for him, and he would need support right now," he said. "The team and management will put things in place to look after him. He needs love at the moment, he tried really hard to get fit for this campaign."

Du Plessis admitted South Africa's injury problems had forced him to draw up a new plan.

"I think we'll really have to look at that now, there's only 14 players to pick from now. There's not a lot of options for the bowling attack," he said.

"You have to decide whether you go with all your all-rounders in your team, bat deep and try to get a big score."

In pics: Key players in India vs South Africa World Cup clash Paceman Anrich Nortje was ruled out with a thumb issue before the World Cup even started. Whether it's winning or losing, the main thing is getting to the semi-finals." South Africa, who have never won the World Cup, have endured a wretched start to the tournament, losing to hosts England by 104 runs then slipping to a 21-run loss to Bangladesh on Sunday. Top-order batsman Hashim Amla returns for the India game after missing the second match following a hit on the head during the tournament opener against England. Stay positive Du Plessis said he it was important to stay "strong and positive" despite the challenge of working with limited resources. He needs love at the moment, he tried really hard to get fit for this campaign." Du Plessis admitted South Africa's injury problems had forced him to draw up a new plan. "I think we'll really have to look at that now, there's only 14 players to pick from now. There's not a lot of options for the bowling attack," he said. "You have to decide whether you go with all your all-rounders in your team, bat deep and try to get a big score." India skipper Virat Kohli also sympathised with Steyn and wished his Indian Premier League teammate, for Royal Challengers Bangalore, a "speedy recovery".

People expect century but my focus is on victory, says Virat Kohli ahead of South Africa clash

Pakistan lived up to their 'unpredictable' billing by beating world number one <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pakistan-stun-england-by-14-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-224013">England in a World Cup match</a> on Monday, just three days after losing to world number eight West Indies in their first game of the tournament.

An aggressive Pakistan team turned up at Trent Bridge to deservedly beat pre-tournament favourites England by 14 runs.

It was in marked contrast to Pakistan's seven-wicket humiliation by the West Indies at the same venue on Friday.

Yet England, perhaps, should have seen it coming for all they beat Pakistan, who had lost their 11 previous completed one-day internationals, 4-0 in a recent series.

After all, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/englands-joe-root-scores-first-hundred-of-cricket-world-cup-2019-223998">2017 Champions Trophy in England</a> and Wales saw Pakistan start the tournament with a 124-run defeat by India only to thrash their arch-rivals by 180 runs in the final.

The lows and highs of Pakistan cricket were neatly summed by former England captain turned commentator Nasser Hussain.

"Pakistan cricket at its best, one minute down, next minute up," said Hussain when Azhar Ali dropped India captain and Virat Kohli off Mohammad Amir in the final and the very next ball Shadab Khan took a sharp catch to dismiss the star batsman.

Sent into bat by England on Monday, Pakistan posted their second highest World Cup total of 348 for eight, just one short of their score against Zimbabwe at Jamaica in the 2007 edition.

It was the complete opposite to the way they batted on Friday when they were shot out for 105 - their second-lowest World Cup total - by the West Indies pace trio of Oshane Thomas, Jason Holder and Andre Russell.

West Indies polished off the low target for the loss of just three wickets in a mere 13.4 overs, with Pakistan seemingly completely demoralised by the drubbing.

But amid a chorus of criticism from former players and fans back home, Pakistan roared back right from the start against England, scoring 69 without loss in the initial 10-over powerplay.

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed accepted his team could go from the inept to the inspiring in just a few days.

"That's the interesting thing about Pakistan, so I always say be patient with us," Sarfaraz told AFP after the match. "We told the players to show aggression against England and stage a strong comeback."

"I am happy that they did that," added Sarfaraz who made a valuable 55 in an innings where Mohammad Hafeez's 84 was the top score.

"The most important thing was to put a decent opening stand and once we did that we posted a good total and then the bowlers did very well," the wicket-keeper explained.

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur said last month that he and his backroom team were fed up with the cliched description of the team's form swings.&nbsp;

"'Unpredictable' –- that's a word that us as coaching staff hate," Arthur said.

Pakistan's performances in their first two matches of this World Cup indicate, however, they may have to live with the tag for a while yet.

And Wasim Akram, a member of the Pakistan side that heeded the words of then captain and now prime minister Imran Khan to "fight like cornered tigers" as they came back from the brink of elimination to win the 1992 World Cup, suggested that perhaps they just ought to embrace it.

"Even I don't know why we are so unpredictable for so many years," the left-arm fast-bowling great said at Trent Bridge on Monday.

"But it's the beauty of Pakistan cricket and why people follow the team."

Inept to inspiring: I always say be patient with us, says captain Sarfaraz after beating England

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/people-expect-century-but-my-focus-is-on-victory-says-virat-kohli-ahead-of-south-africa-clash-224280">Virat Kohli</a> will embark on the most defining journey of his international career, carrying the hopes of more than a billion when he leads India against an injury-hit South Africa in their World Cup opener here Wednesday.&nbsp;

Kohli is one of the best batsmen of this era but this edition of the World Cup will define his legacy as a leader, an aspect on which the jury is still out despite some heady achievements in the Test arena.&nbsp;

The current team does have potent match-winners with the skipper himself being the biggest of them all but it still misses the aura, the 'class of 2011' under Mahendra Singh Dhoni had.&nbsp;

Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh were in a different league with the support cast comprising Munaf Patel, Ashish Nehra, Suresh Raina and a young Kohli.&nbsp;

But this team, led by Kohli and mentored by Dhoni, has had its share of good results and six wins in nine games would ensure a smooth passage into the semi-finals.&nbsp;

Two years of investment has gone into building a potent ODI squad, something that started right after the 2017 Champions Trophy final loss against Pakistan.&nbsp;

The 'Men In Blue' have had adequate rest. All other teams have already played two games each and they can't wait to kick-start their campaign with a commanding performance.&nbsp;

The first match in a tournament of such vast magnitude is always important and South Africa's confidence will be at its lowest following back-to-back defeats against England and Bangladesh.&nbsp;

To make matters worse, senior speedster Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the tournament due to a shoulder injury and has been replaced by left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi is also out for at least tomorrow's game with a hamstring strain. Hashim Amla got a nasty hit on the helmet off Jofra Archer's short ball against England in the opening game.&nbsp;

The clash couldn't possibly have been more well-timed as India have a chance to hold the Proteas by the scruff of their neck when they are seemingly at their weakest.&nbsp;

However, a cornered opponent is always a dangerous proposition and head coach Ravi Shastri, a shrewd tactician by all means, will be surely making the players aware of the consequences of taking their foot off the pedal.&nbsp;

The pitch at the Ageas Bowl stadium in Southampton, devoid of grass cover, is expected to be a batting-friendly but Kohli will have a few points to ponder upon as the weather forecast on match day indicates cloud cover with intermittent shower.&nbsp;

Will the third seamer in Bhuvneshwar Kumar come into the picture? Does Ravindra Jadeja's warm-up matches' form get more credence than Kuldeep Yadav-Yuzvendra Chahal's 22-month show in tandem? Does Kedar Jadhav fit in without playing a single game for a month or Vijay Shankar gets a look in?&nbsp;

These are some of the pressing questions that skipper Kohli needs to address going into the first game.
There's no doubt that the Proteas are badly hit by poor form and injuries but it may just take one fiery spell from Kagiso Rabada to straighten things up.&nbsp;

A bit of help from the weather conditions with his scorching pace and ability to move the ball, Rabada could just unsettle the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, who haven't had the best of times during the past few months.&nbsp;

Both are capable of turning the match on its head but they could be short on confidence due to lack of runs since the start of the away ODIs against Australia.&nbsp;

Rohit's apparent weakness against leg-spinners could be exploited by rival captain Faf du Plessis, who can again think of giving the new ball to Imran Tahir.&nbsp;

KL Rahul is expected to take the No. 4 slot but it needs to be seen as to how well he performs when the condition are nippy. Dhoni at No 5 will be the stabilising factor and if he bats like the Bangladesh warm-up game, he can be a nightmare for the Proteas attack.&nbsp;

But what will be a bigger worry for Du Plessis will be the batting where AB de Villiers' absence has surely had an impact. The poor technique of Proteas batsmen against slow bowlers have been time and again exposed and 20 overs of quality spin bowling could be too hot to handle for the South Africans.

In all, it's advantage for&nbsp;India at Southampton.

Let the action begin: Mighty India face low on confidence South Africa

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/virat-kohli-and-team-attends-practice-session-ahead-of-south-africa-challenge-224017">India cricketers</a> are likely to sport orange jerseys instead of the usual blue in selected games of the ongoing World Cup, including the one against hosts England on June 30.&nbsp;

The jersey, which will be predominantly orange with a tinge of blue, will be unveiled during the course of the tournament.

"The BCCI marketing team is still working on the design and the jersey will be unveiled very soon," a BCCI source told PTI.

The need for an alternative jersey arose after International Cricket Council issued a guideline before the start of the Word Cup, requiring teams to have two different uniforms for all its televised tournaments except hosts England.

"For televised ICC events all participating teams will be required to provide for two different coloured kits, except for the host country who has a preference in the choice of colour and may, if it chooses to do so, provide only one coloured kit to be worn in all matches throughout the event. In advance of the event the teams will be notified which coloured kit will be worn in each match," the ICC had said in a release.&nbsp;

India's blue jersey clashes with England's blue, and therefore Virat Kohli and his team will be seen in orange on June 30 at Edgbaston.&nbsp;

Similarly, India could take the field in orange colours against Afghanistan whose jersey is also predominantly blue. In the rest of the game, India will wear blue as usual.&nbsp;

South African players donned their usual greens against England in the tournament opener but in their following game against Bangladesh, they wore a jersey which was predominantly yellow.&nbsp;

Bangladesh's main jersey is also predominantly green.&nbsp;

Bangladesh in fact had become the first team to unveil its alternative uniform ahead of the World Cup with red replacing the green. Afghanistan is another team which has already unveiled its second jersey.&nbsp;

The concept of multiple jerseys has been inspired from club football in which players choose their colour on a home and away basis.

"For televised ICC events all participating teams will be required to provide for two different coloured kits, except for the host country who has a preference in the choice of colour and may, if it chooses to do so, provide only one coloured kit to be worn in all matches throughout the event. In advance of the event the teams will be notified which coloured kit will be worn in each match," the ICC had said in a release. India's blue jersey clashes with England's blue, and therefore Virat Kohli and his team will be seen in orange on June 30 at Edgbaston. Similarly, India could take the field in orange colours against Afghanistan whose jersey is also predominantly blue. In the rest of the game, India will wear blue as usual. South African players donned their usual greens against England in the tournament opener but in their following game against Bangladesh, they wore a jersey which was predominantly yellow. Bangladesh's main jersey is also predominantly green. Bangladesh in fact had become the first team to unveil its alternative uniform ahead of the World Cup with red replacing the green. Afghanistan is another team which has already unveiled its second jersey. The concept of multiple jerseys has been inspired from club football in which players choose their colour on a home and away basis.

World Cup: South African pacer Dale Steyn ruled out of tournament due to shoulder injury

South Africa's troubles compounded after young fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was ruled out of the team's next World Cup game against India here Wednesday.&nbsp;

Ngidi had suffered a left hamstring injury during <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bangladesh-beat-south-africa-by-21-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-223723">team's defeat against Bangladesh on Sunday</a> and hobbled out of the field bowling only four overs.

"Ngidi suffered a sharp discomfort in his left hamstring. We decided he had a hamstring strain. He will be out for at least week to 10 days," team doctor Mohammed Moosajee told the media persons after the match against Bangladesh at the Oval.

"He will have a scan tomorrow and hopefully ready for the West Indies game."
Ngidi has had injury issues having missed IPL due to a side strain while playing a home series against Sri Lanka.

Ngidi's ideal replacement should be Dale Steyn provided he gets fit in time. Steyn bowled a couple of overs in the nets but there is still no clarity on his availability for the India game.

If Steyn doesn't make it, all-rounder Chris Morris could possibly be an ideal replacement candidate.

There was however some positive news for the Proteas as senior batsman Hashim Amla seems to have recovered from the concussions suffered after being hit in the helmet by Jofra Archer.

"The plan is to have him ready for the India game in Southampton. His initial reports on concussion was inconclusive. The next test showed he could bat. However he felt some symptoms and was rested for the Bangladesh game," Moosajee said.

South Africa cannot afford any more mistakes at the World Cup and will need to win almost all their remaining seven games if they hope to qualify for the semi-finals, former all-rounder Jacques Kallis has said.

South Africa lost their tournament opener to England by 104 runs before they suffered an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bangladesh-beat-south-africa-by-21-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-223723">upset 21-run defeat against Bangladesh</a> on Sunday.

"I think you'll need six wins, maybe five with a really good run rate, to finish in the top four," Kallis said in a column for the International Cricket Council.

"So South Africa almost need to win every game they will play. There will be no margin for error," he added.&nbsp;

The top four teams from the new round-robin format qualify for the semi-finals and defeat against India on Wednesday could also potentially affect South Africa's net run rate, which will decide the final standings if teams are tied on points and wins.

"It doesn't get any easier though against India but it's their first game and our third, so maybe that could give us the edge we need," Kallis added.

"They've not played for a week and maybe there will be some first game nerves, whereas we're settled.

"Strange things happen in this sport and if we can get a win then I think we can go on a streak and we are still good enough to be a contender."

Kallis criticised captain Faf du Plessis for the lack of a backup plan during Bangladesh's innings.

"It's great having a game plan but you need to have a back-up when it's not working, I felt we were one step behind the entire match and just tactically a bit off," he said. "We need to be a bit smarter."

Injuries to South Africa's pace attack have also thrown a spanner in the works with experienced Dale Steyn yet to fully recover from a shoulder injury and Lungi Ngidi injuring his hamstring against Bangladesh.

"The injury to Lungi Ngidi certainly didn't help Faf," Kallis added. "He's a world-class player and a big part of our attack. You've got to play Dale Steyn against India now, and hopefully he is close to fitness.

"We've got to play all our cards and we can't afford anymore silly mistakes at vital stages. These are the best sides in the world and they'll always punish you."

Pakistan beat World Cup favourites England by 14 runs despite centuries for Joe Root and Jos Buttler at Trent Bridge on Monday.

Having scored 348 for eight in their 50 overs thanks to 84 from Mohammad Hafeez and Babar Azam's 63, Pakistan held off the England charge with a late flurry of wickets to leave them 334-9.

Root scored 107 and Buttler made 103, but that was not enough to stop hosts England suffering a first defeat in their second match of the tournament as Pakistan bounced back from a thrashing against the West Indies.

Earlier, Pakistan put their woeful start to the World Cup behind them on Monday, racking up a hefty 348 for eight wickets at Trent Bridge after being put in to bat by hosts and tournament favourites England.

Mohammad Hafeez top-scored with 84 off 62 balls including eight fours and two sixes, while Babar Azam made 63 and captain Sarfaraz Ahmed belted a quickfire 55.

England banked on the pace of Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer for early wickets, no doubt hoping to recreate the way the West Indies skittled Pakistan out for 105 on Friday.

Instead, opening batsmen Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq delighted their vocal supporters by belting a string of fours and one six in an opening partnership of 82.

England spinner Moeen Ali finally broke the pair up, claiming the wicket of Fakhar (36) when he miscalculated the spin and was stumped by keeper Jos Buttler.

Woakes took a diving catch at extra cover to dismiss Imam-ul-Haq (44) six overs later, giving Moeen his second wicket of the morning and leaving Pakistan on 111-2.

Babar and Mohammad Hafeez then steadied the ship for Pakistan with a partnership of 88 runs - partly helped by England's Jason Roy dropping a relatively easy catch off Hafeez when on 14 at mid-off. The home side, indeed, were uncharacteristically ragged in the field for most of the innings.

Moeen and Woakes combined again for the next wicket, when Babar mistimed and lofted the ball towards mid-on where Woakes dived forwards to scoop up the catch.

Hafeez was eventually caught, hitting the ball low towards mid-off where Woakes gleefully snatched his third catch of the day.

Woakes matched his performance in the field with three late wickets, leaving England with a challenging, record-setting target. The best successful World Cup run chase to date came in 2011 when Ireland made 329 against England.

Germany's star footballer Thomas Muller shared a picture posing&nbsp;in the Indian cricket jersey, carrying a cricket bat in his left hand. He wished all the participants good luck for the Cricket World Cup 2019, which is underway in England and Wales.&nbsp;

He gave a special mention to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/injury-scare-for-india-skipper-virat-kohli-hurts-thumb-during-training-223619">Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli</a> and extended good wishes to the 'Men in Blue'.

The 29-year-old, himself a world champion with Germany in 2014, took to social media on Monday to declare his support for India, who start their World Cup campaign against South Africa in Southampton on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka's batsmen must show more patience under pressure in Tuesday's "must-win" encounter against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">World Cup</a> dark horses Afghanistan to put their crushing opening-round defeat behind them, pacer Lasith Malinga said on Monday.

New Zealand thumped Sri Lanka without losing a single wicket in Cardiff on Saturday to begin their campaign in style after seam bowlers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson skittled them out for 136.

Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne contributed an unbeaten 52 in that total as the Sri Lankan top-order's vulnerability in bowler-friendly conditions was exposed and Malinga said that a similar performance against Afghanistan would cost them dear.

"Patience is very important. We know these conditions, we can have someone get 60-70 runs and still the ball can move. Whoever the batsman is, he has to finish the game," Malinga told a news conference at the same venue.

"I feel players need to get confidence... we need to get mentally tough. The pressure is with us, yes, but we have to play free and do our best.

"At the moment we want to be concerned with our own skill and how we're going to play. (It is) a must-win game tomorrow. We'll try our best... in accuracy and tactically, everything hopefully will be there tomorrow."

Afghanistan fared only slightly better against defending champions Australia in their opener, losing by seven wickets, but Malinga is not taking them lightly.

"I think they have experienced players because most of them play in franchise cricket. They know how to accelerate and they have confidence," he added.

"The important thing is handling pressure... that's the big challenge for us."

Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib, meanwhile, said his team were targeting a morale-boosting victory against the former champions to get back on track.

"We have the opportunity to do well against them. I hope if we play 50 overs, batting, then definitely we can beat them," he said.

"If we play 50 overs, maybe (it will be) difficult for them... I saw the Sri Lankans play and they've lost a few games in the last two years... they're struggling in one-day matches."

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis warned his team to expect "harsh words" as he fights to save his country's spluttering World Cup challenge after they <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bangladesh-beat-south-africa-by-21-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-223723">lost to Bangladesh on Sunday</a>

Du Plessis' side are already in danger of blowing their World Cup bid after two defeats in the first four days of the tournament left their campaign in turmoil.

Thrashed by 104 runs against hosts England on Thursday, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-record-partnership-spurs-bangladesh-to-score-their-highest-odi-total-223680">South Africa struggled again</a> when they returned to the Oval to face Bangladesh on Sunday.

After Bangladesh posted their highest one-day international score of 330-6, South Africa's attempt to become the first team in World Cup history to successfully chase a total that high fell 21 runs short.

It was a bitter defeat for Du Plessis, who took his share of the blame when he admitted he was wrong to put Bangladesh into bat after winning the toss.

With seven games remaining, South Africa can't afford more slips if they are to make the semi-finals from the 10-team group.

They face title contenders India on Wednesday knowing a victory is essential and Du Plessis promised he would get tough in a bid to spark his side.

"My style of captaincy has always been that there's a line and if you don't perform to that line there will be a lot of harsh words," he said.

"There's a time for strictness, and when you see that a dressing room needs you to be strong and to motivate them. But today was not good enough."

"If guys think they can make excuses for performances like today then they will be challenged - that's a fact. All I can say is that we'll keep fighting."

"I'm extremely disappointed, and gutted to say that all formats of our game at the moment are just not firing."

"To blame bad luck is not just an option for me. You still have to find a way to put in performances and we're just off in some areas."

Adding to South Africa's woes, Lungi Ngidi sustained a hamstring strain against Bangladesh that will rule him out for up to 10 days.

Du Plessis hopes to have key batsman Hashim Amla fit to face India in Southampton after he missed the Bangladesh game following a head injury against England.

However, pace bowler Dale Steyn remains a major doubt with a shoulder injury that has kept him out of the first two matches.

Du Plessis top scored for South Africa with 62, but conceded his team were undermined by sloppy bowling and careless batting.

"Our plan in both the England game and this game was that we make sure we target them with aggressive bowling, but we weren't at our best," he said.

"The opening bowlers would be the first to say we didn't execute our skills today."

"We're just off in all facets and it's not good enough."

"With the bat once again we looked good, did some good things, but myself included, you need to go through and score hundreds, that's what wins you matches, not 30s and 40s."

Du Plessis insisted South Africa have not lost their identity, but with their hopes of winning the World Cup for the first time already fading, he knows they need an immediate response to the crisis.

"Plan A's gone. Now we have to look at all our options, reshuffling all our cards and seeing what we can do with it," he said.

"I have to believe we can still win the tournament. I wouldn't be South African if I said no to that."

"We know we're not good enough at the moment. I don't think it's got anything to do with identity. At the moment it's a skill thing.

"Every single player in our dressing room is not playing to their full potential."

"It's just about making sure you look at yourself in the mirror and see how you can find that answer."

The addition of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=jofra+archer">Jofra Archer</a> in the side allows England to pick up wickets at any stage of an innings during the World Cup, former captain Kevin Pietersen has said.

Archer's World Cup debut, where he picked up three wickets in England's 104-run victory over South Africa, was among the early tournament highlights after he was fast-tracked into the hosts' one-day international setup.

The Barbados-born quick is now expected to lead the pace attack with Mark Wood when they take on Pakistan in their second match later on Monday.

"The addition of Jofra Archer to that setup gives England the capabilities to take wickets from overs one to 50," Pietersen told Sky Sports.

"Occasionally they might get a couple of wickets with the new ball and then try and back (leg-spinner Adil) Rashid to get wickets. If Rashid doesn't get any wickets in the middle overs then they struggle.

"Archer can knock over the top order of every single team. He can then come in the middle of the innings and get a couple of wickets from short-pitched deliveries and then at the death he is a fantastic bowler."

Archer impressed Pietersen during the Big Bash Twenty20 league in Australia where he picked up 35 wickets in 28 games for Hobart Hurricanes.

The 24-year-old is yet to make his test debut and Pietersen backed him to make England's squad to team up with veteran fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad when they take on Australia in the Ashes series, which begins in August.

"Having faced him, having played with him in Australia in the Big Bash, he is something to be looked after just because of the pace and bounce," Pietersen added. "He has the ability to take wickets all the way throughout the innings.

"He is a special, special talent. I'm telling you now it should be an Anderson, Broad and Jofra Archer combination come the first test matches of the Ashes."

Defending champions Australia defeated Afghanistan by seven wickets in their campaign opener of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">Cricket World Cup 2019</a> on Saturday at Bristol’s County Ground.&nbsp;

Openers Aaron Finch and David Warner completed their half-centuries as Australia chased down the target of the 208-run target in 34.5 overs.&nbsp;

Finch scored a total of 66 runs off 49 balls and his innings included 6 fours and 4 sixes before losing his wicket to Gulbadin Naib.&nbsp;

Usman Khawaja, in at number three, scored 15 runs and lost his wicket to Afghan's spin sensation Rashid Khan.&nbsp;

Warner, who returned after a year-long ban, played brilliant innings and scored an unbeaten&nbsp;89 runs.&nbsp;

He was given the player of the match for his performance.&nbsp;

"Need to keep our nerves and look to see through that period. It's a different contrast from the team back then (in 2015). There was more experience at that point but this squad also has great energy in it," said Warner after the match.&nbsp;

Steve Smith, who is also coming after serving a one-year ban, scored 18 runs.&nbsp;

Glenn Maxwell scored the winning runs.&nbsp;

"Need to keep our nerves and look to see through that period. It's a different contrast from the team back then (in 2015). There was more experience at that point but this squad also has great energy in it," said Warner after the match. Steve Smith, who is also coming after serving a one-year ban, scored 18 runs. Glenn Maxwell scored the winning runs. Australia win! 👏 The defending champions stroll to a comfortable seven-wicket win, riding on David Warner's 89*.
