Health ministry figures showed deaths from COVID-19 stood at 231 on Sunday from a record 233 on Saturday, but medics and funeral services say the real toll is much higher, and crematoriums are overloaded.

The total official death toll has risen 50 per cent already this month to 5,000 with the spread of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/delta-is-the-fastest-covid-19-variant-and-will-pick-off-the-most-vulnerable-who-393278">Delta variant</a> that has also surged elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

Reuters was unable to reach the health ministry or a junta spokesman for comment on the outbreak and public response.

Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing appealed for volunteers and for national cooperation at a meeting on the coronavirus emergency in comments broadcast on state television on Sunday.

"Some people do not dare to volunteer because of intimidation. Some people want to join but they have different reasons and difficulties," he said. "As I said before, I welcome them. Cooperation is required."

The state-run Global New Light of&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;newspaper said producing more oxygen was a priority. The junta's critics say lives have been lost because of restrictions it has imposed on some private oxygen suppliers in the name of stopping hoarding.

Groups of friends in the main city, Yangon, told Reuters they were clubbing together to try to import oxygen cylinders from neighbouring Thailand.

COVID-19 response runs underground in junta-ruled Myanmar

Vivek Murthy, the US surgeon general, defended the renewal of the mask mandate in Los Angeles on Sunday, saying that other areas may have to follow.&nbsp;

According to Hilda Solis, a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors member, in the last few days, they have had almost 1,900 cases, while over 460 patients were admitted to their intensive-care units (ICUs).

"This is very disturbing, and of course, as responsible elected officials, we have to do something," she added.

Health officials are working to reassure the public that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus-vaccine">vaccines</a> are safe and effective, but vaccine skepticism, driven by misinformation, has grown in many places.

"What I worry about," he said, "is that we still have millions of people in our country who are not vaccinated. We have to still protect our children under 12 who don't have a vaccine."

The US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/joe-biden">Joe Biden</a> and other administration officials have also harshly criticised social media platforms for spreading misinformation about coronavirus.

Murthy, while talking to CNN, said that these, "platforms have to recognize they played a major role in the increase in speed and scale with which misinformation is spreading."

A team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Human Development and the Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) led this&nbsp;longitudinal&nbsp;study which was published in the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry.

Until now, there was an assumption that the environment affected us only over a longer period of time. However, the study showed that even short stays outdoors are beneficial to the brain.&nbsp;

As part of the research, six middle-aged, healthy city dwellers were examined over a period of six months.&nbsp;

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to take 280 scans of their brains. During the study, participants were asked to report on their own behaviour during the past 24 hours and, specifically, on the amount of time they spent outside before imaging.

The participants' fluid intake and intake of caffeine-containing beverages were also asked to see if these variables altered the association between time spent outside and their brains. Duration of time spent in the sunshine was also asked so as to account for seasonal differences.

Interestingly, grey matter in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and lateral part of the&nbsp;cerebral cortex's frontal lobe, thus establishing a positive&nbsp;correlation with participants' time enjoyed outdoors.

Planning and regulating actions are some of the functions of this part of the cortex i.e. cognitive controls. There is also evidence that many psychiatric disorders are associated with a loss of grey matter in the prefrontal cortex.

Time spent outside had a positive effect on brain structure even when the other factors that could also explain it were held constant.

Talking about the severity of the new variant of coronavirus, Catt warned her Instagram followers in a post and wrote, “I’m telling you this so that you understand that the pandemic is very much NOT over”, along with a photo of herself in bed.&nbsp;

“Delta is relentless and highly contagious and grabbed ahold of me even after getting vaccinated,” she wrote.

Catt explained that she contracted the Delta variant of the virus while caring for an unvaccinated person who was sick with it, despite wearing a mask while in their presence.

Lambda’s prevalence and its mutations, which resemble those found in several other highly contagious or worrisome variants, mean that it is worth watching, scientists said. But much remains unknown, and it is not yet clear how much of a risk it poses.

“I think some of the interest is just based on the fact that there’s a new variant, and it has a new name,” said Nathaniel Landau, a microbiologist at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine who is studying the new coronavirus variants.

“But I don’t think there’s any more reason to be concerned than before we knew about this variant,” Landau added. No evidence so far suggests that lambda will outcompete delta, the highly transmissible variant that’s now dominating most of the world. “There’s no reason to think that this is now something worse than delta.”

Pablo Tsukayama, a microbiologist at Cayetano Heredia University in Peru who documented lambda's emergence, concurred. Latin America has “limited capacity” to do genomic surveillance and follow-up laboratory investigations of new variants, he said. That has led to an information gap fueling concerns about lambda. “I don’t think it’s going to be worse than any of the ones that we have already,” he said. “It’s just that we know so little that it lends itself to a lot of speculation.”

As of mid-June, lambda had been reported in 29 countries, territories or areas, according to a June 15 update from the WHO. The variant had been detected in 81 per cent of coronavirus samples sequenced in Peru since April, and 31 per cent of those in Chile to date, the agency said.

The variant accounts for less than 1 per cent of samples sequenced in the United States, according to GISAID, a repository for viral genome data. Isolated cases have been reported in a number of other countries.

The variant contains eight notable mutations, including seven in the gene for the spike protein, found on the surface of the virus. Some of these mutations are present in other variants and might make the virus more infectious or help it evade the body’s immune response.

But big questions remain unanswered. It is not yet clear whether lambda is more transmissible than other variants, whether it causes more severe disease or whether it renders vaccines less effective.

“We don’t have a lot of information, compared to the other variants,” said Ricardo Soto Rifo, a virologist at the University of Chile who has studied lambda.

Preliminary laboratory studies, which have not yet been published in peer-reviewed journals, provide reason for both concern and reassurance. In these studies, research teams led by Soto Rifo and Landau found that antibodies induced by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/pfizer">Pfizer</a>, Moderna and CoronaVac vaccines are less powerful against lambda than against the original strain, but that they are still able to neutralize the virus.

“This decrease in the neutralizing antibodies does not mean that the vaccine has decreased effectiveness,” Soto Rifo said. Real-world studies of how well the vaccines hold up against the variant are still needed, he said.

The researchers also reported that like several other variants, lambda binds more tightly to cells than the original strain of the virus does, which may make it more transmissible.

Although many questions remain, Trevor Bedford, an evolutionary biologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, said that he does not find lambda as worrisome as delta and does not expect it to become as dominant globally.
