Authorities in India's national capital have made wearing of masks in public places mandatory due to rise in coronavirus cases.

Officials said a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed on anyone who violates the directive, however, the fine is not applicable to people travelling together in private cars.

Delhi has witnessed a surge in COVID-19 for the past two weeks. On Wednesday, the national capital reported eight deaths due to the virus which was the highest death toll in the past six months, the health department said. Delhi reported 2,495 new COVID-19 cases including seven fatalities on Tuesday with the positivity rate rising to 15.41 per cent.

The number of new COVID-19 cases has been above 2,000 in the past one week with active virus cases at 8,205.

Delhi reported 2,726 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths on Thursday marking the ninth consecutive day when the capital logged over 2,000 cases in a day. The positivity rate on Thursday stood at 14.38 per cent. The country's capital had recorded over 28,000 COVID-19 cases in January this year during the third wave of the pandemic with positivity rate of 30.6 per cent.

Health officials said there are over 5,000 patients on home isolation in the capital. Reports say teams have been formed to ensure people wear masks in public places.&nbsp;

India reported over 58,000 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours including 534 fatalities.

According to India's health ministry, the daily positivity rate is at 4.18 per cent with 2,14,004 active cases. The total coronavirus cases reported was 58,097 along with 15,389 recoveries on Wednesday.

The total death toll due to the virus in the country has risen to 4,82,551 since the pandemic began last year. India had reported 37,379 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday with&nbsp;1,892 Omicron cases across 23 states and Union Territories.

India's&nbsp;health ministry said there were 2,135 cases of Omicron variant detected across states and Union Territories with&nbsp;Maharashtra recording 653 cases followed by Delhi (464 cases)&nbsp;Kerala(185 cases), Rajasthan (174 cases),&nbsp;Gujarat(154 cases)&nbsp;and Tamil Nadu with 121 Omicron cases.

India's western state of Maharashtra which has recorded the most number of fresh cases declared that rapid RT-PCR test would be required for all the international passengers landing at Mumbai international airport.

On Tuesday, Mumbai had reported 10,860 coronavirus cases which was the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases since April 7 last year as Nagpur district recorded 196 new coronavirus cases.

India Jharkhand state also witnessed a surge in coronavirus cases with 2,681 fresh cases on Tuesday as authorities said the cases had doubled from the previous day.

A record single-day spike of 1,163 fresh cases took the COVID-19 tally in Delhi to over 18,000 on Saturday and the death toll due to the disease mounted to 416, authorities said.

The previous daily high in fresh cases, 1,106, was recorded on May 29.

This is the second consecutive day in Delhi when over 1,100 COVID-19 cases have been reported.

In a bulletin issued on Saturday, the Delhi health department said the death toll from coronavirus infection has risen to 416, and the total number of cases mounted to 18,549.

It added the cumulative death figures refers to fatalities where primary cause of death was found to be COVID-19, as per the report of the Death Audit Committee on the basis of case sheets received from various hospitals.

On Friday, the total number of cases stood at 17,386 including 398 deaths.
