In a letter to states, Bhushan said, "Corbevax will be available as precaution dose after completion of 6 months or 26 weeks from the date of administration of the second dose of either Covaxin or Covishield vaccines for population above 18 years."

Notably, this is the first time that a booster dose that is different from the one used for primary vaccination against COVID-19 has been allowed in the country.

"In addition to the existing homologous precaution dose, the option of a heterologous precaution dose with Corbevax would be available to all persons above 18 years of age," Bhushan said in the letter.

The Union health ministry reportedly took the decision following the recommendations of the COVID-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI). It had reviewed data of the double-blind randomised phase-3 clinical study which evaluated the immunogenicity and safety of booster dose of Corbevax vaccine when administered to COVID-19-negative adult volunteers of age 18-80 years previously vaccinated with two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin.

Corbevax is currently being used to inoculate children in the age group of 12 to 14 years.

Hyderabad-based drugmaker Biological E's Corbevax has become the first vaccine in India to get the Drugs Controller General of India's (DCGI) approval for a heterologous COVID-19 booster shot.

According to Biological E, people who are 18 years and above as well as who have already taken two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin can now receive a dose of Corbevax.

Earlier, a government panel had also recommended granting emergency use authorisation for Corbevax for children in the five to 11 years age group.

“The Subject Expert Committee on COVID-19 of the CDSCO which deliberated on Biological E’s EUA application has recommended granting emergency use authorisation for use of Corbevax in the age group of five to 11 years,” a source told news agency PTI.

Mahima Datla, Managing Director, Biological E. Limited, said, "We are very happy with this approval, which will address the need for COVID-19 booster doses in India. We have crossed yet another milestone in our COVID-19 vaccination journey. This approval reflects once again the sustained world-class safety standards and high immunogenicity of Corbevax."

The statement further said, "Biological E has conducted a multicentre Phase III placebo-controlled heterologous booster clinical trial in 416 subjects from 18 to 80 years of age who were previously vaccinated with two doses of either Covishield or Covaxin at least 6 months prior to the administration of CORBEVAX as a booster dose."

"In a subset of subjects evaluated for nAb against the Omicron variant, the Corbevax booster shot resulted in a significant increase in the nAb titers against the Omicron variant. After the booster dose of Corbevax, Omicron nAbs were observed in 91 pc and 75 pc of subjects who had received primary vaccination by Covishield and Covaxin respectively," said the statement.

India began administering precaution doses of vaccines to healthcare and frontline workers and those aged 60 and above with comorbidities from January 10.

Over thirty million (3 crore) children in the age group of 12-14 years have been administered the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Tuesday.

The vaccination for children between the 12-14 age group started on March 16 with Biological E's intramuscular vaccine Corbevax, which is administered to the beneficiaries in an interval of 28 days.

So far 30,669,820 children between the 12-14 age group have been administered the first dose of the vaccine while 10,200,272 have received the second dose.

In the age group of 15-18 years, 587,704,28 first doses of the vaccine have been administered, and 43,308,651 second doses.

The countrywide vaccination drive began on January 16 last year with healthcare workers getting inoculated in the first phase.

Vaccination of frontline workers started on February 2, 2021. The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination commenced on March 1 last year for people over 60 years of age and those aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions.

India launched vaccinations for all people aged more than 45 years from April 1 last year. The government then expanded its vaccination drive by allowing everyone above 18 years of age to be inoculated against the viral disease from May 1, 2021.

COVID-19 vaccination for minors in India started from January 3 onwards for those in the 15-18 age group with Bharat Biotech`s Covaxin. The drive later expanded on March 16 to include children aged above 12 for Biological E`s Corbevax.

The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination commenced on March 1 last year for people over 60 years of age and those aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions. Similarly, the COVID-19 precaution dose administration for the age group 18-59 years also started from April 10 onwards.

Corbevax in late December was given emergency use approval for use in adults, but it has yet to be included in the national immunisation program. 
 
On August 21, last year, the Centre placed an order for 300 million&nbsp;Corbevax medicines.&nbsp; 
 
So far, India's vaccination programme has employed almost 1.76 billion vaccine doses, with roughly 84 per cent of those being a domestic version of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 shot made by the Serum Institute of India.

The third wave of COVID-19 infections in India, caused by the Omicron coronavirus variety, has largely subsided, with the government reporting 16,051 infections on Monday, down from over 300,000 in late January.

In the fight against the covid 19 pandemic, the Indian government has cleared two more vaccines and one antiviral drug for emergency use. The two latest vaccines that have been given the green light are the serum institute of India's Covovax and biological ease jab Corbevax.

Molnupiravir is an antiviral drug that is being developed by nearly 13 companies in India. This can be used to treat adult patients of Covid who, the doctors believe, have a heightened risk of "progression of the disease". The antiviral drug will not be used for Covid patients under the age of 18, for now, as per local media reports.

With these new approvals, the number of approved Covid vaccines has increased to eight. Till now, Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik V, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson and ZyCoV-D had approvals India.<o:p></o:p>
