The researchers discovered that there was a slow decline in the levels of the virus in a sample of milk which was stored at 4 degrees Celsius and hinted at the chances of H5N1 being present in refrigerated raw milk for several weeks. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert over an India-made cough syrup that was sold in Iraq after it was found contaminated and deemed “not safe for use”.

The alert came after a sample of the common cold syrup, ‘Cold Out’, was obtained from a location in Iraq and submitted for laboratory analysis.

"The sample was found to contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol (0.25%) and ethylene glycol (2.1%) as contaminants. The acceptable safety limit for both ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol is no more than 0.10%," the health body said.

The WHO said that diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal.

The syrup was manufactured by Fourrts (India) Laboratories Pvt. Ltd, a Chennai-based plant, and the product is stated to be manufactured for Dabilife Pharma Pvt. Ltd. India, the WHO said in a statement.

"To date, the stated manufacturer and the marketer have not provided guarantees to WHO on the safety and quality of the product," the alert said.

It said that this syrup may have marketing authorisations in other countries or regions.

<h2>Toxic chemical&nbsp;</h2>

"The substandard batch of the product is unsafe and its use, especially in children, may result in serious injury or death," the alert warned.

"Toxic effects can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death," the WHO said.

The Iraqi officials have not yet found any deaths related to poisonous medications, but last week the Ministry of Health&nbsp;said that the medicine failed separate tests conducted by Iraqi authorities and that products circulating in the market were being confiscated.

<h2>Fifth time&nbsp;</h2>

This is the fifth time that contaminated syrups have been tied to an Indian manufacturer.

Cases of Indian-made tainted cold syrups have been reported in Indonesia,&nbsp;Gambia, Uzbekistan and&nbsp;Cameroon, and have killed about 300 children in the past year, reports Bloomberg.

The Indian manufacturer Marion Biotech, which had exported the syrups to Uzbekistan, had its drug license cancelled by the Uttar Pradesh government.

The company involved in Gambia, Maiden Pharmaceuticals, denied that its drugs were responsible for the deaths in the country. Later, tests by an Indian government laboratory found no toxins in the syrup.

According to Reuters, DCGI (Drugs Controller General of India) chief VG Somani wrote to WHO, saying the samples of Maiden's syrup had not been contaminated with ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol.

<h2>PFAS present in everyday products</h2>

Locations and cities which were close to “potential sources” of PFAS faced the most contamination by the chemicals, which were found in a glut of everyday products ranging from non-stick cookware to takeout containers and fire-fighting foam. 
 
Dr. Jamie DeWitt, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology in the Department of Pharmacology &amp; Toxicology at East Carolina University while speaking to CNN, said, “There’s been almost no place scientists have looked where they have not found PFAS.” 
 
The study discovered that most of the exposed regions included central and southern parts of California, the Great Plains, the Great Lakes and the Eastern Seaboard. As per the USGS, the probability of PFAS not being present in tap water is around 75 per cent in rural areas and around 25 per cent in urban areas.

<h2>Harmful effects of PFAS</h2>

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said that exposure to certain levels of PFAS may lead to increased high blood pressure or decreased fertility in pregnant women. The chemical substances may also have developmental effects in children and can increase the risk of a few cancers which include prostate, kidney, and testicular. The researchers are carrying out more studies to explore other potential health impacts of PFAS.

As per the court documents, the accused entered the Waitrose store around 7:30 on Wednesday evening with several syringes full of blood, which he then injected into several food items. After that he went and did the same at the Sainsbury’s Local store and also threw raw eggs at this store. He then proceeded to Tesco Express to perform the same act and was later arrested.

"Officers were called at around 19:40 after a man was reported to be shouting abuse at people in the street. The man is alleged to have visited three supermarkets in Fulham Palace Road SW6 and injected foodstuffs using a number of syringes. Chinese authorities said tests of a batch of human immunoglobulin for intravenous injection, reportedly contaminated with the HIV antibody, showed the negative presence of the virus.

"Shanghai authorities have run virus tests for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C on the reported batch and they all show negative," the National Medical Products Administration said in a statement on late Wednesday.

China's National Health Commission had earlier said there was a "very low" risk of HIV infection from the batch after a baby was reported to have tested "weak" HIV positive.

It asked medical institutions to halt the use of the batch and seal remaining supplies for further investigation.

Shanghai's Medical Products Administration said it had ordered the manufacturer to halt production.

Human immunoglobulin is made with human blood plasma and is used to treat a variety of conditions.

The Shanghai Medical Products Administration said in a statement on Wednesday that the batch, identified by China's National Health Commission as number 20180610Z, was made by China Meheco Xinxing Pharma Co, a unit of state-controlled China Meheco Group Co Ltd.

The manufacturer could not immediately be reached for comment on Thursday. Chinese offices are largely shut for the week-long Lunar New Year holiday.

The investigation began after a baby in Jiangxi province had initially tested "weak" positive for HIV during a health check, the exposure that was traced to the batch under investigation, domestic media the China Economic Observer reported. The baby subsequently tested negative for HIV, the report said.

It is not clear how many people may have been injected with the batch under investigation. The media report said the batch contained 12,226 doses due to expire in 2021.

The Chinese government has repeatedly vowed to tighten safety oversight and to crack down on companies and officials following a string of food and drug scandals in recent years, including one last year involving the maker of a rabies vaccine.
