There is no specific data to suggest the exact number of affected women, but the campaigners believe there were several hundred victims of this forced sterilisation.&nbsp;

Although the programme ended with communist regime’s collapse in 1989, the women in labour were continued to be misled into signing consent forms before caesarean births. In some cases, they were not even told that they were being sterilised after the delivery. &nbsp;

The compensation claims will be administered by Czech health ministry. It is also yet to announce when the process will begin. The victims will also have to support their claims. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Elena Gorolová, a 51-year-old social worker from Ostrava, said, the move marks a historic win. She was sterilised at the age of 21.&nbsp;

The groups separately called the accord a "significant accomplishment that achieves consensus" among most claimants, the Boy Scouts and more than 250 local councils.

Thursday's settlement requires a judge's approval and could face opposition from insurers that would be on the hook for payouts.

In a court filing, affiliates of American International Group Inc, Chubb Ltd , Travelers Cos and other insurers said the Boy Scouts excluded them from negotiations and gave victims' lawyers too much of a say in crafting a settlement.

"With only the fox guarding the hen-house, the outcome is utterly at odds with what BSA itself asserted was necessary for a confirmable (bankruptcy) plan," the insurance affiliates said.

Founded in 1910, the Boy Scouts filed for Chapter 11 in February 2020 after being hit with hundreds of sexual abuse lawsuits.

These lawsuits were filed after several U.S. states, including New York, began letting people sue over alleged sex abuses that occurred decades earlier.

Two African-American half-brothers who spent 31 years in prison in the southern US state of North Carolina for a crime they did not commit have been awarded $84 million, their lawyer said Monday.

"This is the largest jury verdict ever returned in a wrongful conviction case in the history of the United States," Des Hogan told AFP.

Henry Lee McCollum and his half-brother Leon Brown, both of whom are intellectually disabled, were convicted of the 1983 rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl.

They were respectively 19 and 15 years old at the time of their arrest and claimed to have been forced to sign confessions.

Their convictions were overturned in 2014 after the discovery of DNA evidence that placed another man at the scene where the girl's body was found.

McCollum and Brown pursued a federal civil rights case and a jury on Friday awarded them a total of $84 million in compensatory damages, punitive damages and interest.

"The jury sent a message that the old times of ignoring the rights of the poor, the people of colour, the marginalised in rural counties, are gone," Hogan said.

"They are thrilled that they won, they are happy that the jury said the sheriff was wrong," Hogan said. "They were vindicated."

The judges said Ntaganda did not have the resources to pay the compensation himself. Instead, they asked the tribunal's own Trust Fund to help set up and finance vocational and other programmes to support victims of his crimes.&nbsp;

Ntaganda was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2019 for murder, rape and other atrocities committed when he was military chief of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC) militia in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in 2002-2003.&nbsp;

Hundreds of civilians were killed and many thousands forced to flee during the fighting.&nbsp;

"The chamber hereby unanimously issues an order for reparations against mister Ntaganda (and) assesses mister Ntaganda's liability for these reparations at 30 million US dollars," judge Chang-ho Chung said.&nbsp;

As Ntaganda could not pay, "the Chamber encourages the Trust Fund for Victims to complement the reparation awards to the extent possible and engage in additional fundraising efforts as necessary to complement the totality of the award," he added.&nbsp;

In 2020 the fund, which relies on voluntary contributions, had around 18 million euros in reserves and much of that was already pledged in other cases.&nbsp;

Victims eligible for the reparations programme include victims of attacks led by Ntaganda, child soldiers under his command, rape victims and children born out of rape.&nbsp;

The judges awarded collective reparations, meaning there will be no individual pay outs. Any money will instead go to charities or funds set up to help victims.&nbsp;

ICC orders record $30 million compensation for Congo victims 

The Punjab government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs. 50 lakh to the kin of the deceased coronavirus victims.

The compensation will be provided only to the&nbsp;legal heirs of state employees who lost their lives to the coronavirus while performing official duty.

It will will&nbsp;remain in force from April 1, 2020, to July 31, 2020, subject to review thereafter.

The ex-gratia will be admissible to all employees covered under the old pension scheme and those recruited on and after January 1, 2004, and covered under the New Pension Scheme (NPS). The spokesperson said the cases of providing monetary relief to the dependants of manpower working on contract or through outsourcing, will be considered under the provisions of the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

Punjab has recorded 1,762 COVID-19 cases, including 31 deaths. The state is now hoping to be able to ease some lockdown restrictions.

Cho, a daughter of Korean Air chairman Cho Yang-ho, was sentenced to a year in jail in 2015 for violating aviation security and business practices laws but was freed five months later when an appeals court gave her a suspended jail term.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday confirmed that 11 people have lost their lives due to cyclone Gaja.

He also announced that the government will give Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh to those injured severely and Rs 25,000 to people who have suffered minor injuries.

The Chief Minister further said that the amount of damage that has been caused due to the cyclone has not been ascertained as yet.&nbsp; 
“The most affected districts of Tamil Nadu are Thiruvaarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjore, Cudallore, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram,” Palaniswami said while addressing a press conference.

Elaborating upon the measures that the state government is taking in the cyclonic storm, he said: “The state government is working on war footing to ensure that everything is fine at the earliest. We have also taken precautionary steps to avoid any more damages or calamities. Around 82,000 people are staying in 421 relief camps. Indian Administrative Services officials are on the ground to ensure rescue and relief operations are executed properly.”

Palaniswami also informed that officials have been explained how to deal with issues related to cyclone Gaja.

Mohammad Shami's estranged wife Hasin Jahan has demanded Rs 10 lakh maintenance per month for the interim period when the case is on.

Hasin has demanded Rs 7 lakh as family maintenance while Rs three lakh per month for the child.

As per media reports, Hasin's lawyer said the court has understood the significance of the litigation and has hence decided to hear it on urgent basis.&nbsp;

He added that the court has also asked Shami to clarify his point immediately.

He further expressed confidence that his client will definitely win the case.&nbsp;

The lawyer also confirmed that the pacer's wife has filed the domestic violence case against Shami, his mother, elder brother, sister and sister-in-law.

These are the same persons against whom Jahan had lodged a police complaint on March 8 at Jadavpur police station.&nbsp;
