A new report of the UN on the state of nature talks about how the international community collectively missed a critical deadline to safeguard biodiversity.

UN report: World missed a critical deadline to safeguard biodiversity

As the US inches closer to the day of voting, climate change is increasingly becoming a hot topic for debates. There are wildfires raging through California, Oregon and the state of Washington, moulding the narrative of presidential campaigns.

4.5 million acres of land has burnt since August, 6,200 homes and structures have been destroyed, and 3 million more homes are at risk of being ravaged. 36 people have died so far. And 64,000 people have been forced to evacuate. Additionally, the air quality has worsened.

Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump have laid out their vision to tackle this natural disaster.

Donald Trump

Donald Trump has never really been a believer in climate change, and has often called it a hoax. But he landed in Sacramento, California for a briefing about the wildfires, where officials from other political backgrounds were also present. This included Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, and Wade Crowfoot, the Secretary of California’s natural resources agency.

The two men urged Trump to understand the science behind these wildfires.

“If we ignore that science and sort of put our head in the sand and think it's all about vegetation management, we're not going to succeed together protecting Californians”, Crowfoot said.

“It'll start getting cooler. You just watch”, Trump then said.

Crowfoot went on to say, "I wish science agreed with you." Trump fired back with “I don't think science knows”.

Trump had also earlier claimed that COVID-19 would disappear as months get hotter. He is now hopeful that the fires will disappear when things start getting cooler.

Joe Biden

Joe Biden thinks Donald Trump is the one setting these fires. Speaking in Delaware, Biden called Trump a "climate arsonist".

US Election 2020: Where do Trump and Biden stand on climate change?

In northeast Greenland, an occurrence has raised alarm bells of climate change as a large chunk of ice in the Arctic has broken away.

The chunk that is separated from Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf has a length of 11 sq kms and satellite images have shown that it is broken away into several small pieces.

Scientists on Monday said the vast and ancient ice sheet sitting atop Greenland had sloughed off a 113 square kilometer chunk of ice last month. The section of the Spalte Glacier at the northwest corner of the Arctic island had been cracking for several years before finally breaking free on August 27, clearing the way inland ice loss to the sea, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland reported.

"The atmosphere in this region has warmed by about 3C since 1980," said Dr Jenny Turton, as quoted by BBC News, adding that in 2019 and 2020, the summer temperatures were at record high levels.

Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden is about 80 km long and 20 km wide and at 79N, the glacier splits into two.

There is a minor offshoot that turns towards north, called Spalte Glacier that has now separated.

With climate change driving up Arctic temperatures, the once-solid sea ice cover has been shrinking to stark, new lows in recent years.

This year’s minimum, still a few days from being declared, is expected to be the second-lowest expanse in four decades of record-keeping. The record low of 3.41 million square kilometers, reached in September 2012 after a late-season cyclonic storm broke up the remaining ice – is not much below what we see today.

Climate change: Massive chunk of ice twice the size of Manhattan separated

A new United Nations report claims that governments across the world have failed to conform to their pledges made a decade a go to protect wildlife.

The report, which was published on Tuesday also claimed that the destruction of nature may be slowed, and even reversed through conservation efforts.

Besides bringing to the light the inaction of world governments, the report also suggested changes to at least delay, if not stop climate change.

The changes were suggested in sectors like farming and urban planning, which could help save a million species.

Later this month, countries are going to meet for a UN summit on biodiversity, and may build upon this report to trigger future action.

The report added that making commitments are not enough, and that action on those commitments is pertinent to saving wildlife across the globe.

Before countries meet next year in China for a new wildlife pact, the UN has asked governments to set aside 30 per cent of the planet’s land and sea areas for conservation.

As of now, only 17 per cent of the world’s land receive protection. To survive, the world needs to protect 30 per cent resources.

The report also pointed to improvements in conservation. For instance, the Japanese crested ibis, which had almost vanished, recently started to produce chicks in the wild. Conservationists had released captive-bred birds, which may have facilitated this resurgence.

If it weren’t for conservation efforts, the number of bird and mammal extinctions would have been twice as high during the last decade.

The report also taken into account the effects of COVID-19 pandemic, and the impact of industrial society on the natural world.

The virus emanated from an animal, and could open up risks of more such pandemics jumping from animals.

Ever wondered just how cold the last Ice Age was? Were there only glaciers scattered across the planet with no vegetation in sight? Scientists know the exact answer.

After studying ocean plankton fossils and climate models, scientists have reached a conclusion on exactly how cold the last Ice Age was.

The last Ice Age covered swathes of land across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, even places were ice is not common.

Officially referred to as the “Last Glacial Maximum”, the Ice Age which happened 23,000 to 19,000 years ago witnessed an average global temperature of 7.8 degree Celsius (46 F), which doesn’t sound like much, but is indeed very cold for the average temperature of the planet. The Ice Age was 7 degrees Celsius colder than the average global temperature in 2019, the research posits.

Scientists also found inconsistencies in the temperatures around the globe. Some regions were a lot cooler than the others. Naturally, poles were the coolest, while the tropics were less affected.

The lead author of the study, Jessica Tierney from the University of Arizona believes that such understanding may help understand what to expect in the future. These included mammoths, mastodons, woolly rhinos, and saner-toothed cats among many. It was during the Ice Age that humans entered North America for the first time ever. They crossed over through a bridge that connected Siberia to Alaska when sea levels were lower than they are today.

Pope Francis on Tuesday asked countries to continue fighting global warming as per the 2015 Paris climate accord.

"Modern society had pushed the planet beyond its limits and the time to fix a climate emergency was running out", he said.

"Our constant demand for growth and an endless cycle of production and consumption are exhausting the natural world," Francis said.

"Forests are leached, topsoil erodes, fields fail, deserts advance, seas acidify and storms intensify. Creation is groaning!", he added.

He was speaking on the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, when he urged countries to be more mindful of the planet.

"We need to do everything in our capacity to limit global average temperature rise under the threshold of 1.5°C enshrined in the Paris Climate Agreement, for going beyond that will prove catastrophic, especially for poor communities around the world," he added.

Recently, United States President Donald Trump began the process of removing US from the Paris agreement. US is the world's second largest emitter of greenhouse gases, just behind China.

On the other hand, his rival Joe Biden from the Democratic party said that he intends to return the US to a leadership role on climate change. He expressed a desire to reenter the US in all potential climate negotiations, and to work on the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Pope Francis added that biodiversity loss, climate change induced disasters, and the unequal impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the poor were all a "wakeup call in the face of our rampant greed and consumption".

A study has revealed that rising temperatures caused by climate change have contributed to a consistent presence of West Nile virus cases in the United states.

The study published in Medical News Today on August 20, which is also World Mosquito Day, focussed on temperature changes in the US and the accompanying spread of West Nile virus between 1900 to 2020.

The study highlighted how some of the key factors that helped spread the virus throughout the country were the extreme temperatures and in some areas, the frequency of droughts.

Another factor that has seen more significance between 2004 and 2019 has been the temperatures exhibited in the Southwest, and particularly in California. Temperatures in this area have been consistently high and on average have seen low levels of precipitation.

The US Environment Protection Agency has, hence, listed the West Nile virus as an indicator of climate change.

“Multiple factors impact the complex epidemiology of [West Nile virus] besides its transmission and distribution,” Professor Shlomit Paz, a climatologist and climate change specialist and head of the Department of Geography and Environment Studies at the University of Haifa in Israel, wrote. She also noted that weather conditions are some of the top determinants in this equation.

“Generally,” Paz points out, “during the past 50 years, the average temperature across the US has risen, while precipitation has increased by an average of about 5%.”

“Some extreme weather events, such as heat- and cold-waves, intense precipitation events, and regional droughts, have become more frequent and intense,” she added.

Describing the ice loss as "staggering," the group found that melting glaciers and ice sheets could cause sea levels to rise dramatically

Earth has lost 28 Trillion tonnes of ice since 1994 due to global warming

Greenland's ice sheet melted more last year than any year previously recorded, according to a new study.

Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is the world's largest island. It's located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of Canada's Arctic Archipelago. Around 79% of its surface is covered in ice.

The said research was published in the journal Communications Earth and Environment on Thursday. It found that in 2019, Greenland's ice sheet lost an annual record of 532 billion tonnes of ice, with 223 billion tonnes of ice lost during the month of July alone.

On the contrary, between 2003 and 2016 the ice sheet lost about 255 billion tonnes of ice on average -- per year.

Greenland's ice sheet is the second biggest in the world after Antarctica's, and its annual ice melt during summer contributes more than a millimeter rise to sea levels every year.

In 2019, Greenland's ice sheet lost 15% more ice than the previous record set in 2012, the study found.

Last year was the third hottest year since records began and surface air temperatures at the Arctic were the second highest in 120 years of records.

Interestingly, two colder years that preceded 2019 saw a reduction in the ice melt.

The report follows another study published last week that found Greenland's ice sheet has melted to a point of no return.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, a new report has claimed that the human consumption of earth's resources witnessed a fall in 2020.

The researchers shared this data on Saturday when the world marked Earth Overshoot Day, the date when humanity has consumed all the biological resources that Earth can renew annually.

According to the Global Footprint Network, this day has seen a rise since the 1970s, but this year this day was observed on August 22, almost a month more than last year on July 29.

The group also said there has been 9.3 per cent fall in humanity's footprint as compared to last year.

However, Mathis Wackernagel, president of Global Footprint Network said these figures are "not something to celebrate", adding "it's not done by design, it's done by disaster."

Coronavirus has killed nearly 800,000 people across the globe and led to strict lockdowns earlier this year in several countries, which caused a slowdown in industrial activities, and vehicular pollution, among others.

The research has also found that coronavirus led to a 14.5 per cent drop in CO2 emissions compared to last year and an 8.4 per cent fall in commercial forestry, due to less demand prompting less harvest.

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg urged German Chancellor Angela Merkel "to be brave enough to think long-term" in a meeting on Thursday where they discussed the climate crisis and measures to fight global warming.

During a 90-minute conversation in the chancellery, Merkel explained her climate policy priorities for Germany's European Union presidency, the goal of achieving EU climate neutrality by 2050 and interim targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, a government spokesman said.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Thunberg said Merkel had been nice and very friendly, but that the chancellor had a great responsibility and huge opportunity to become a world leader in the fight against climate change.

"What it comes down to is that we all start to treat the climate crisis like we treat any other crisis," Thunberg said, adding that she and her fellow activists had asked Merkel to tackle climate change with more urgency.

"What we want is leaders. We want people to step up, to dare to step out of their comfort zones, to prioritize the future ahead of us now and to be brave enough to think long-term," she said.

Thunberg was joined by fellow members of the Fridays for Future campaign group, among them Luisa Neubauer.

"She at least confirmed that she is willing to get stuff done during the presidency," Neubauer said. "Yet eventually, at the end of the day, it's about common budgets, it's about very clear targets, it's about numbers and figures and that we need action, more than really nice and big words."

The government spokesman said Merkel and the activists agreed that global warming posed a challenge for the world and that industrialized countries had a special responsibility to tackle it.

"The basis for this is the consistent implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement," the spokesman said.

The German government admitted earlier this week that it would have missed its climate target for 2020 if the economic havoc wrought by the coronavirus pandemic had not caused a large drop in greenhouse gas emissions.
