<p>A former sergeant from the US Army was arrested on Friday (Oct 6) for attempting to provide classified information to China, said US Justice Department.</p>

<p>Joseph Daniel Schmidt (29) has been charged with retaining secret national defense information and trying to give it to China. Schmidt served in an army intelligence unit from 2015 to 2020.</p>

<p>After leaving the military, Schmidt offered the secret information to Chinese consulate in Turkey and the Chinese security services.</p>

<p>Schmidt had access to secret and top secret information while serving in the 109 Military Intelligence Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state. In March 2020, he went to Hong Kong. The Justice Department has reportedly said that in Hong Kong, Schmidt "continued his efforts to provide Chinese intelligence with classified information."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"He allegedly retained a device that allows for access to secure military computer networks and offered the device to Chinese authorities to assist them in efforts to gain access to such networks," the department said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Schmidt was living in Hong Kong and returned to the US on Friday (Oct 6). He was arrested as he landed in San Francisco.</p>

<p>"Members of our military take a sworn oath to defend our country and the Constitution," acting US attorney Tessa Gorman said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In that context the alleged actions of this former military member are shocking –- not only attempting to provide national defense information, but also information that would assist a foreign adversary to gain access to Department of Defense secure computer networks."&nbsp;</p>

<p>If found guilty of charges levelled against him, Schmidt could face up to 20 years in prison.</p>

<p>Schmidt has been arrested just two months after the arrest of two members of the US Navy who were suspected of spying for China.</p>

<p>Jinchao Wei, serving on USS Essex in San Diego, allegedly gave away dozens of photos, documents and videos that detail &nbsp;operation of ships and the system that are aborad it.</p>

<p>Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao, served at a naval base near LA and is accused of spying for China for almost two years.</p>

He attended a meeting and proceeded to ask very specific questions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He was told again to focus on his job, not any “deep dives” into classified intelligence information.</p>

<p>And a third memo from February this year showed that the 21-year-old was again found viewing information “that was not related to his primary duty and was related to the intelligence field”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prosecutors said in their filing that&nbsp;Teixeira continued to share information with his "online associates, defying these admonishments and taking further efforts to conceal his unlawful conduct," the Associated Press reported.&nbsp;</p>

Relatives of two men killed in the 2012 attack on a US consulate in Libya have filed a lawsuit blaming the deaths on Hillary Clinton's "reckless" handling of classified information in her private email server. While secretary of state, Clinton conducted official government business on a private server at her home, which critics say exposed official US correspondence to possible hacking attacks from foreign governments and terror operatives. The FBI concluded last month that the Democratic presidential nominee had been "extremely careless" with classified information on her server, but nevertheless declined to recommend criminal charges against her over the scandal. US authorities ended their probe into the matter, but Clinton's political enemies have been trying to keep controversy over her email server alive, including linking it to the attack in Benghazi nearly four years ago. Parents of two American security agents at the consulate in their wrongful death suit filed yesterday against Clinton allege that terrorists were able to determine the men's whereabouts because of her use of a private server. The assault on the US consulate, which occurred while Clinton was secretary of state, killed four Americans in all, including Washington's ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens. "It is highly probable, given defendant Clinton's history of reckless handling of classified information, that defendant Clinton, as secretary of state, sent and received information about ambassador Christopher Stevens and thus the US Department of State activities and covert operations that the deceased were a part of in Benghazi, Libya," said the text of the lawsuit filed in the US district court in Washington, DC. "As a direct result of defendant Clinton's reckless handling of this classified, sensitive information, Islamic terrorists were able to obtain the whereabouts of ambassador Christopher Stevens and thus the US State Department and covert and other government operations in Benghazi, Libya and subsequently orchestrate, plan, and execute the now infamous September 11, 2012 attack."
