A drone detected by security personnel at Vandenberg Base, which is a launch site for SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets and missile tests, led security personnel to a nearby park, where they found Zhou with the device hidden in his jacket.

Agents who received a search warrant upon reviewing the drone found out that it had aerial photographs of the base.

Zhou is a Chinese national who, as per the Justice Department, is a lawful permanent resident of the United States, and had visited China recently in the month of February.

Zhou made a court appearance in San Francisco on Tuesday, facing charges of failing to register an aircraft not providing transport and violating national defence airspace. Notably, he did not enter a plea during his court appearance.&nbsp;

He is due to appear in US District Court in Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

In the year 2023, the United States found and traced an alleged spy balloon as it was spotted hovering above the US military installations. The authorities had shot it down and retrieved its large payload of electronics.

Chinese customs data show there have been no shipments of wrought and unwrought germanium or gallium to the US this year through October, although it was the fourth and fifth-largest market for the minerals, respectively, a year earlier.

Similarly, China's overall October shipments of antimony products plunged by 97 per cent from September after Beijing's move to limit its exports took effect.

China accounted last year for 48 per cent of globally mined antimony, which is used in ammunition, infrared missiles, nuclear weapons and night-vision goggles, as well as in batteries and photovoltaic equipment.

This year, China has accounted for 59.2 per cent of refined germanium output and 98.8 per cent of refined gallium production, according to consultancy Project Blue.

"The move is a considerable escalation of tensions in supply chains where access to raw material units is already tight in the West," said Project Blue co-founder Jack Bedder.

Prices of antimony trioxide in Rotterdam had soared by 228 per cent since the beginning of the year to $39,000 a metric ton on Nov. 28, data from information provider Argus showed.

"Everyone will dig in their backyard to find antimony. Many countries will try to find antimony deposits," said a minor metals trader in Europe, declining to be named.

Perpetua Resources (PPTA.O), opens new tab, which is developing an Idaho antimony mine with U.S. government financial support, said China is "weaponizing accessing" to minerals critical for the US military and technology firms.

"We must get serious about American mineral sources," said Perpetua CEO Jon Cherry. "It's time to end our reliance on China and secure our future."

Internet censors have taken down a speech by prominent Chinese economist Gao Shanwen after he warned that a widespread lack of opportunities for young people was pulling down growth in the country, Radio Free Asia reported.&nbsp;

Today, young people in China are tightening their belts and "turning off the lights and eating noodles", instead of following promising careers and contributing their disposable income into the economy, Gao, a chief economist at SDIC Securities, said at an investor conference in Shenzhen on Tuesday.&nbsp;

“Turning off the lights and eating noodles” is a catchphrase used to describe someone who is down on their luck after failed investments in the stock market.&nbsp;

Gao's statement went viral on social media and was considered insensitive enough to be removed from the "Economist Book Club" public account on WeChat.&nbsp;

Gao further argued that areas with younger populations had seen worse economic performance since the ending of the zero-COVID policy in December 2022 than areas with older populations.&nbsp;

“The younger the population of a province, the slower the consumption growth; the older the population of a province, the faster the consumption growth,” Gao said, citing recent economic data.&nbsp;

“This conclusion is somewhat counterintuitive and is summarized ... in three sentences: vibrant older people, lifeless young people, and middle-aged people in despair,” he added.&nbsp;

He continued that many older people in China have pensions to rely on, whereas, young people are barely contributing to the economy at all.&nbsp;

“For the elderly, ... there will be no impact on their income, and they can continue to enjoy their twilight years and dance in public places,” Gao said.

“For young people, income expectations have been significantly revised downward, the certainty of income growth has been significantly revised downward,” he said. “They can’t find jobs, or the jobs they find are significantly different from their expectations.”
