India has sent 100 tonnes of Nano Nitrogen fertiliser to Sri Lanka in the backdrop of latter barring the use of contaminated Chinese fertilisers.

Sri Lanka had barred shipment of Chinese organic fertiliser after it was found to be contaminated with bacteria, a development that has miffed Beijing which was quick to blacklist People’s Bank of Sri Lanka in a quid pro quo move. The People's Bank is the second largest commercial bank in Sri Lanka.

Indian supplies reached on two Indian Air force Globemaster aircraft on Thursday, which was Diwali day. The supplies were requested by Sri Lankan government.

A release by the Indian high commission in Colombo said, "the deployment was essentially to support the government of Sri Lanka's initiative towards organic farming and to expedite availability of Nano Nitrogen fertiliser to the Sri Lankan farmers".

The C17 aircraft operations were coordinated in close liaison with Sri Lanka Air Force.

The Indian mission pointed out that the close coordination between the two services led to the "quick deployment....and expeditious disembarkation" of IAF aircraft.

The Indian crew was received by Chief of Staff,&nbsp;Sri Lanka Air Force AVM Prasanna Payoe.

This is not for the first time that New Delhi has reached out to Colombo as part of its "Neighbourhood First' policy" and 'First Responder' in the region.

Sri Lanka has raised with Beijing the issue of Chinese-made doormats featuring the island's national lion flag being sold through online retail giant Amazon.

The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry on Friday said it had called for an inquiry into the sale of non-slip doormats on Amazon with the print of Sri Lanka's national flag. It has taken up the issue with the Chinese embassy in Colombo, and also asked Colombo's mission in Beijing to track down the manufacturer.

The ministry has also instructed the Sri Lankan embassy in Washington to "follow up on the matter" with Amazon.

"There have been recent reports on social media platforms of a 'Sri Lanka Flag Non-Slip Doormat' which is being advertised for online purchase on the Amazon website. Foreign Secretary Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage has informed the Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing to contact the manufacturer concerned in China and also has brought to the attention of the Chinese Embassy in Colombo, the advertising of Sri Lanka's national flag as a doormat. The Sri Lanka Embassy in Washington DC has also been instructed to follow up on the matter with the advertising platform Amazon," the Lankan Foreign Ministry said in a statement, dated March 12.

Several Chinese vendors on Amazon were offering the non-slip doormat with Sri Lanka's flag on it at prices ranging from $10 to $24.

Unable to service its loans, the government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe leased a Chinese-built port at Hambantota to a Beijing company for US $1.12 billion in 2017.

Samaraweera said the country was able to maintain economic stability despite the April 21 attacks that killed at least 258 people at three churches and three luxury hotels.&nbsp;

The government expects tourism to decline 30 per cent this year as a result of the suicide bombings. The loss of revenue has been estimated at US $1.5 billion.&nbsp;

The minister's remarks came as the census department said the country's economic growth in the first quarter of this year was 3.7 per cent -- better than the 3.5 per cent forecast by the authorities.&nbsp;

That compares to 1.79 per cent in the final quarter of 2018 and 4.02 per cent a year earlier.&nbsp;

Last month, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka cut its main lending rate by 50 basis points to 8.5 per cent to encourage borrowing and mitigate any fallout from the bombings.

Forty-five foreigners were among the dead from the April 21 suicide attacks and nearly 500 people were wounded.

The government has begun subsidising loans to hotels which were already suffering a declining in foreign guests following last year's political crisis.
