Carbon stores in the Earth's interior are still elusive and cycle carbon over millions of years. According to scientists, carbon which is drawn into the Earth's interior remains tucked away at great depths and does not generally show up in the form of volcanic release.

The findings, published in Nature Communications focus specifically on "subduction zones" in the Earth's interior where tectonic plates collide and are forced deeper into inside zones.

They found that only a third of the carbon which is recycled beneath volcanic regions returns to the Earth's surface through recycling. Until now, it was believed that the carbon that goes down mostly ends up returning to the surface.

To tackle climate change, scientists need to find way to reduce the amount of Carbon Dioxide in our planet's atmosphere. And with such observations from the deep Earth, scientists may be able to better understand the nature of carbon on Earth. They want to establish&nbsp;how carbon travels and interacts between the atmosphere, oceans and life on the surface.

What did the scientists do?

Surface carbon can reach the Earth's deep zones only through plate subduction, as mentioned above. Instead of what scientists thought was returning to Earth from volcanoes, the carbon is pushed deeper into the Earth through chemical processes, essentially working in the Earth's favour and limiting scope of greenhouse effect.

Cambridge University's team undertook the experiments at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility where low concentrations of metals were&nbsp;observed under high pressure and temperature conditions.

To recreate the conditions of subduction zones where tectonic plates reside, they used a heated "diamond anvil". Based on this, they ascertained that carbonate rocks (which resemble chalk) lose calcium but gain magnesium when pushed into the Earth's mantle.

Owing to this process, the carbon material does not dissolve into volcanic fluids, but is instead pushed deeper into the mantle where it may become diamond, proving not all carbon returns to the surface.

As per the researchers, forests in the southeast of the Amazon have been badly hit by deforestation and climate change. However, in this area, the temperatures have increased in the two hottest months of the year by 3.07C. Carbon survived an interstellar journey to reach the Earth, entirely avoiding vaporisation, as believed earlier, according to a new study.

Carbon is the backbone of life on Earth. It is responsible for regulating climate and making Earth a habitable planet.

The study, detailed in the journal ‘Science Advances’, showed that most of Earth’s carbon was inherited directly from the interstellar medium -- the material that exists in space between stars in a galaxy.

This likely happened after the cloud of dust and gas that circled our young sun and contained the building blocks of the planets, formed and warmed up.

Further, carbon was also likely isolated into solids within one million years of the sun’s birth, said the research team from the University of Michigan in the US.

The team quashed the previously believed condensation model saying that the gas molecules that carry carbon would not be available to build the Earth because once carbon vaporises, it does not condense back into a solid state.

"The condensation model has been widely used for decades. It assumes that during the formation of the sun, all of the planet’s elements got vaporised, and as the disk cooled, some of these gases condensed and supplied chemical ingredients to solid bodies. But that doesn’t work for carbon," said Jie (Jackie) Li, Professor at the Michigan University.

For the study, the team estimated the upper bounds of how much carbon the Earth might contain. It helped the researchers to find when the carbon might have been delivered here.

Carbon must exist in the right proportion to support life on the Earth. While excess carbon can make Earth like planet Venus, trapping heat from the sun and maintaining a temperature of about 880 degrees Fahrenheit, too little, on the other hand, would resemble Mars: An inhospitable planet unable to support water-based life, and having temperatures around minus 60.

"I believe the cold and pollution are the main causes." &nbsp;&nbsp;

A seasonal lack of rain and snow in Kabul, coupled with a fast-growing population, fume-belching vehicles, and proliferation of diesel-fuelled generators, are contributing to the deteriorating air quality.

Kabul's air pollution exceeds the World Health Organisation's (WHO) safe levels on any given day in winter. Recently the city of five million people has ranked among the most polluted in the world, according to the AirVisual network.

The air quality index reading is often above 300, while at night it can top 600. Recent snow and rain offered some respite, but readings still remain well above the WHO's limits.&nbsp;

Any reading over 100 is considered unhealthy.&nbsp;

Long-term exposure to air pollution can cause strokes, heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory illnesses, WHO said.

Authorities have turned to media to educate people on air pollution and encourage the use of face masks, even though they often provide poor protection.&nbsp;

"On the most polluted days we advise people to stay indoors... when the pollution level is at its highest," said Mohammad Kazem Homayoun, NEPA's chief for Kabul.&nbsp;

In a country where most people are illiterate and healthcare is limited, the information is unlikely to help many. &nbsp;

Doctors are also falling victim to the toxic air.&nbsp;

Sohrab Noori, head of the ICU at Wazir Akbar Khan hospital — where the number of admissions for respiratory-related problems has increased — said he had developed a "winter cough" for the first time.&nbsp;

"I think it's an allergic reaction to the air pollution," Noori said as he walked past patients hooked up to oxygen cylinders.&nbsp;

"If it (air pollution) continues in the long term, in two to three months we might have a big health crisis."&nbsp;

The White House has "quietly killed" a $10-million per year NASA program that tracks carbon and methane, key greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, the journal Science said.

NASA's Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) tracked sources and sinks for carbon and made high-resolution models of the planet's flows of carbon, said the report.

"Now, President Donald Trump's administration has quietly killed the CMS," it said, describing the move as the latest in a "broad attack on climate science" mounted by the White House.

The journal said NASA "declined to provide a reason for the cancellation beyond 'budget constraints and higher priorities within the science budget."

It also quoted US space agency spokesman Steve Cole as saying there was no mention of the CMS in a budget deal signed in March, which "allowed the administration's move to take effect."&nbsp

Cole, responding to a request for comment from AFP, said Trump proposed cutting the CMS project and four Earth science missions last year.

After much deliberation, Congress decided they wanted those four space missions to be funded, writing them into the budget bill they passed in March 2018, he said.

But since CMS was not among them, it was cut as proposed, Cole said, describing the entire process as a joint effort by lawmakers and the executive branch.

Existing grants would be allowed to finish but no new research would be supported, he said.

Trump has already cancelled another Earth science mission, the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 (OCO-3), and announced the US pullout from the 2015 Paris climate accord.

According to Kelly Sims Gallagher, director of Tufts University's Center for International Environment and Resource Policy in Medford, Massachusetts, the CMS cuts jeopardize efforts to verify the national emission cuts agreed to in the Paris climate deal.

"If you cannot measure emissions reductions, you cannot be confident that countries are adhering to the agreement," she told the magazine.

In a previous media interaction, he said, "Carbon is first Hindi sci-fi film, I don't know if you will like the film or not when you watch it. But you won't be able to say that this movie was an imitation of any Hollywood film. This is our own version." Watch the movie: Apart from Jackky, Prachi can be seen in a lead role. Talking about her experience, she said, "The first time when the director and writer met me I didn't even take a second to think about it. I was actually blown by the idea, just as much as everyone else is going to be when they watch the trailer. She also spoke about the subject as: "It is sci-fi but not in the entertainment space. We aren't going to show you a cool world about fictional characters or superheroes. It isn't anything of that sort. Carbon is about you and me in the real world and what we could face in 2067." The actors feel that the movie is well-timed and that it is made to make people aware and responsible and not with a sensibility to get awards. (WION)
