Japan imposed trade restrictions on several companies in China, India, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan for allegedly aiding Russia's war in Ukraine, according to a statement released by the Japanese foreign ministry on Friday, as reported by Reuters.

This is the first time Japan has imposed sanctions on Chinese companies concerning the ongoing conflict.

The sanctioned entities include Asia Pacific Links Ltd., based in Hong Kong and accused of supplying microchips for Russian drones, and Yilufa Electronics Limited based in China.

These sanctions mirror measures previously taken by the United States and prohibit Japanese companies from exporting goods to the targeted firms.

The US has accused China of aiding Russia's military efforts in Ukraine by providing drone and missile technology.

Last week, the US expanded its sanctions on Russia, including Chinese companies that sell semiconductors to Moscow.

Additionally, China and Russia reportedly are implementing detailed measures to ensure uninterrupted bilateral financial transactions, potentially exposing some Chinese financial institutions to future sanctions.

Kaushal Shah, founder of the Mumbai-based beauty brand Evor Beauty, implemented a new rule requiring all workers to appear at the office by 9:30 AM, to increase workplace efficiency.

Failure to comply with the guideline could end in a Rs 200 penalty for the latecomer. But the initiative took an unexpected turn when Shah himself was fined Rs 1,000 for being late.

Shah, the founder of Evor Beauty, wrote on X about his plan's failure. He said that last week, he implemented a "strict rule" requiring all employees to report to work by 9:30 AM instead of the customary 10 or 11 AM. In order to enforce the restriction strictly, Shah announced that anyone who arrives late will have to pay a ₹200 fine.

Boss' time rule backfires: Fines himself Rs 1,000 for being late

Tuesday marked another day of records for Indian stocks after last week's rally, and the country's benchmark indices' market value was above $5 trillion.

Indian stocks hit fresh all-time highs on Tuesday.

With global cues pointing to more gains for record-high Indian stocks, traders came out all guns blazing after the market holiday on Monday on account of Eid Al Adha.

On Tuesday, the blue-chip Sensex opened at a new record high of 77,235 and rose further to a new all-time intra-day high of 77,367.

The broader Nifty 50 index started at a life high of 23,571 and jumped to a record of 23,574.

Investors will see if the Nifty can extend its gains this week.

Market value and trading volumes will also be in focus this week.

Last week, the country's stock market became a part of the exclusive $5 trillion club of the United States, China, Japan, and Hong Kong.

It took India about six months to add the latest $1 trillion to the market value of companies listed.

The fact that millions of young Indians have flocked to stock investing is a defining characteristic of gains in the last several years.

The entire record rush is fueled by domestic investors, with foreign entities staying on the sidelines.

Record rally

Last week, the Nifty index gained in four out of five sessions and hit new highs every day.

Not far behind, the Sensex had two records in five days.

After a near-$400 billion wipeout on election results day, the recovery of those losses has been brisk, taking just three days.

That is the fastest recovery rate of over 5 per cent loss in the last decade.

Trade volumes jumped to a record last week, and investors are looking at further highs in the coming week.

Reasons for record highs

So, what is driving this rally?

Bets that the new coalition government will focus on policy continuity and consider boosting consumer spending through tax cuts.

While the centre will focus on fiscal discipline, the broader expectations are that the new budget will benefit the Indian middle class.

Hershey is facing a class action lawsuit over allegations that consumers were misled into believing that Reese’s peanut butter candies provided a higher level of accuracy than they did.

The lawsuit is a class action involving four Reese consumers from southern Florida who claimed to be "very disappointed" by the lack of colour in the candy products they bought in November 2022.

The plaintiffs—Nathan Vidal, Debra Kennick, Abdjul Martin, and Eduardo Granados—stated that they would not have bought the candies if they had known that there would be fewer "explicit carved out artistic designs" than what was shown on the packaging.

They highlighted differences between the advertised designs and the actual products, such as Halloween pumpkins that were supposed to have eyes and a mouth but were produced without them, and a football-shaped candy that looked like an egg because it lacked the expected stitches.

A lawsuit has been filed in the federal court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, seeking at least $5 million in damages.

The allegations involve nine types of Reese’s candies, including the Halloween and Christmas editions, as well as Reese’s Peanut Butter footballs and Reese’s Medals.

Responses from both Hershey and its legal representatives are still pending at the time of this writing.

A lawyer in Tampa, Florida filed a second lawsuit in December with a narrower scope compared to the previous one.

The case, which targeted a single defendant, was voluntarily dismissed yesterday.

Additionally, the lawyer has filed legal cases against Burger King and Taco Bell for serving food that did not match their advertising.

Saudi Arabia's national airline, Saudia Group, just made a big move by ordering over 100 new Airbus jets, showing the kingdom's big plans to grow its tourism.

The order, revealed on Monday, includes 105 planes from Airbus’s A320neo family, consisting of 12 A320neos and 93 A321neos. This purchase brings Saudia Group’s total order to 144 A320neo family planes.

Saudia Group, which includes both Saudia airline and its budget carrier Flyadeal, aims to increase flights and seating capacity across over 100 destinations.

This expansion ties in with Saudi Arabia's goal to attract over 150 million tourists by 2030.

In Airbus's latest annual earnings report in February, the company announced strong performance in its commercial aircraft business and set a target of 800 commercial aircraft deliveries for the year, which is 67 more than in 2023.

This growth highlights Airbus's strong position in the market, especially compared to its US rival, Boeing.

Boeing, which was starting to recover from two deadly crashes of its Max jets in 2018 and 2019, faced another setback on January 5 when a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9.

This incident has further affected the company’s recovery efforts.

Airbus has seen great success with its A321neo, a single-aisle aircraft seating 180 to 230 passengers.

The "neo" designation refers to the "new engine option," showing the use of highly fuel-efficient engines that help airlines cut costs.

In response, Boeing introduced the Max, a 737 model with new, efficient engines, but faced numerous technical issues.

Despite Boeing’s ongoing challenges, Airbus is not expected to significantly widen its lead in the duopoly due to already operating at maximum production capacity, with over 8,600 orders to fulfil.

Apple is running a big sale on its official Tmall site in China, slashing prices by up to $318 on certain iPhone models.

This move is aimed at keeping Apple competitive in the high-end smartphone market, particularly against local competitors like Huawei.

The sale runs from May 20 to May 28 and offers bigger discounts compared to Apple's previous sale in February.

Back then, the highest discount was $159, but this time it's a whopping $318. The biggest price cut is for the 1TB iPhone 15 Pro Max, but other models also have significant discounts.

For example, the 128GB version of the base iPhone 15 model is now $193.48 cheaper, as per Reuters' checks on Monday.

The increased competition from Huawei's new Pura 70 series, launched after the Mate 60 series, has pushed Apple to get more aggressive with pricing to protect its market share.

Apple's February sales had a positive impact, as it helped offset a sales slowdown.

Reuters' analysis of data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) shows that Apple's shipments in China surged by 12 per cent in March, a significant rebound from a 37 per cent decline in sales during the first two months of 2024.

By offering these big discounts, Apple hopes to attract more customers and boost its sales in the tough Chinese market.

It'll be interesting to see how this strategy plays out as Apple deals with competition from both local and global rivals.

Apple launches aggressive discount campaign on Tmall in China

China saw a big increase in money leaving the country in April. This shows that the yuan, China's currency, is facing challenges because the country's economy is slow, and there's uncertainty about the US Federal Reserve's interest rate policies.

New data released on Friday revealed that local companies bought the most foreign money from banks since 2016.

At the same time, exporters held back from changing their dollars to yuan, and people in China bought more foreign money for travelling overseas.

These things show that people are being careful with the yuan. China's interest rates are lower than those of the US dollar, which makes the US dollar more attractive.

Even though the People’s Bank of China is trying to keep the yuan's value steady, it's hard because no one is sure when or how much the US will cut its interest rates this year.

Economists and strategists from Goldman Sachs, including Xinquan Chen, said in a report that they think policymakers will keep strong control to stop the yuan from losing value, by setting the yuan's value and controlling how much foreign money is available, because there's a lot of pressure for money to leave the country.

In April, Chinese banks sold $36.7 billion more foreign money than they bought for their customers. This is the most since December 2016, according to data from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.

Investors liked foreign money assets, showing they are more hopeful about things not in yuan.

Also, the amount of money coming into China from other countries didn't help the yuan, because there was more Chinese money spent on buying foreign money, which is rare.

After all, China usually makes more money from selling things to other countries than it spends. Also, the money spent on people from China travelling to other countries increased.

Dan Wang, who is the main economist at Hang Seng Bank China Ltd., noticed that exporters would rather keep foreign money instead of yuan because they think China's economy won't grow much, and because there's a lot of money leaving the country.

Chinese banks also sent a record $29.5 billion to other countries for their customers to use for investing directly.

This includes foreign countries investing in China and China investing in other countries.

Bloomberg analyst Gerard DiPippo said that the reason for less money coming into China might be that US interest rates are higher, not that other countries are less interested in China.

He said that companies from other countries, including Chinese companies with offices in Hong Kong, might have moved their money to other countries to make more money.

China's capital outflows worsen in April, pressuring the yuan

BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager is in hot water with a $20 million lawsuit filed by their former vice president, Hamdan Azhar.

He claims he got fired after speaking up about a colleague's shady dealings and being told to shut down a project that kept tabs on client discussions about sketchy investments, including in China.

Azhar, says that in March 2022, BlackRock told him to stop working on Trend Spotter, a tool he created, and hand over his projects to Rightpoint, where his former boss Tiffany Perkins-Munn's husband worked.

He says his persistent objections to a $2 million contract given to Rightpoint, which he called "shady business," got him fired two months later.

He started developing Trend Spotter in March 2021 during a company event and says it got a lot of attention and praise at BlackRock.

He argues that his firing was payback and not because of his work, as BlackRock claims. But a BlackRock spokesperson denies Azhar's claims, saying, "Trend Spotter was just for summarising client interactions for marketing. It didn't keep an eye on investments and had no compliance features."

Apart from BlackRock, the lawsuit also involves Perkins-Munn and Azhar's new boss, Riaz Hakkim.

Azhar says Hakkim refused to take his concerns about client discussions that Trend Spotter could have monitored seriously, which he thinks were important for BlackRock's public disclosures.

Despite BlackRock's stance, Azhar's lawyer, Subhan Tariq, points out that Azhar was being considered for a top role at BlackRock AI Labs, showing his value to the company.

This lawsuit comes at a time when the bipartisan House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party is looking into whether BlackRock and index provider MSCI helped funnel money into blacklisted Chinese companies.

The committee found that Wall Street directed $6.5 billion in 2023 into 63 Chinese companies flagged by the US government for supporting China's military or committing human rights abuses through index funds.

While not against the law, the committee has called for tighter controls on such investments, and BlackRock says it follows US laws.

Azhar, who joined BlackRock in February 2020 as head of data science for global marketing, is seeking $10 million in compensatory and punitive damages for breaking state labour laws.

Perkins-Munn works at JPMorgan Chase and Hakkim at Fidelity Investments. Neither company has responded to requests for comment.

Azhar, who joined BlackRock in February 2020 as head of data science for global marketing, is seeking $10 million in compensatory and punitive damages for breaking state labour laws. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has once again highlighted that the trade relationship between Islamabad and New Delhi has remained suspended since 2019 after India raised its import duties on Pakistani goods.

The latest report from The Hindu reveals that Dar explained the situation in a written statement he submitted to the National Assembly of Pakistan, alluding to the fact that India slapped a 200 per cent tariff on imports from Pakistan, stopped the Kashmir bus service, and suspended trade across the Line of Control after the Pulwama attack.

Dar’s remark was in response to Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Sharmila Faruqui, who had asked about trade problems with Pakistan’s neighbouring countries, particularly India.

When asked about their plans to re-establish trade relations with India, he replied that Pakistan’s business community is very interested in this but that 'at present there are no plans to restore relations which have been virtually non-existent since 2019’.

The suspension of trade came after the Indian Parliament on August 5, 2019, abolished Article 370, a move that Pakistan saw as giving no hope for talks between the two nations.

Dar re-emphasised Pakistan’s stand on seeking “engagement and meaningful dialogue” to address outstanding issues, especially the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

He concluded that it is in New Delhi’s interest to create a favourable atmosphere for peace and reconciliation.

India, on the contrary, claims it wants only peaceful and neighbourly relations with Pakistan and reiterates that this can only be achieved if Pakistan stops creating hostility and terror.

Ties between the two nations have been tense for decades and are mostly defined by the conflict around Kashmir and Pakistani accusations of terrorism from India.

Pak minister says no plan to restore trade with India, suspended since 2019

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has achieved one of his five goals set at the start of 2023 by halving inflation.

He may further celebrate progress this week as consumer price growth is anticipated to approach the 2 per cent target, marking its lowest level since July 2021.

However, the challenge lies in persuading the electorate of his contribution to this improvement.

Nineteen months ago, the UK experienced its most severe price shock in decades, with inflation reaching a peak of 11.1 per cent, surpassing that of major advanced economies.

The subsequent rapid decline, the fastest since the 1970s, suggests a potential interest rate cut from 5.25 per cent as early as next month, which could potentially alleviate costs for mortgage borrowers and businesses.

Despite the optimistic inflation data, there are still ongoing economic challenges.

Real wages continue to be below the levels before the financial crisis, with prices currently 23 per cent higher than they were in 2019.

Food prices have surged by approximately 30 per cent since 2021, which is a significant change compared to the previous 13 years.

Although GDP growth has bounced back, output per capita remains 0.7 per cent weaker than it was a year earlier.

The Conservative party, currently behind Labour in the opinion polls and recovering from recent election defeats, plans to use the economic upturn to their advantage as they gear up for an upcoming general election.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt echoed Sunak's sentiments, emphasising the progress made in tackling inflation.

Hunt and Sunak are facing scepticism over their ability to reduce inflation, as the ultimate responsibility lies with the Bank of England.

However, economist Thomas Pugh suggests that if inflation falls to 2.1 per cent or lower, it could pave the way for the Monetary Policy Committee to implement interest rate cuts in June.

The overall economic situation is looking positive. Real wages are increasing at the fastest rate since September 2015, and the economy has rebounded strongly from a slight recession in 2023.

Additionally, energy bills and food inflation have decreased, which is relieving financial pressure on lower-income households.

Sunak's inflation victory faces voter doubts

China's commerce ministry on Sunday said that it had started an anti-dumping probe into the POM copolymers imported from the European Union, United States, Japan and Taiwan.

These engineering plastics are responsible for partially replacing metals like copper and zinc in automobile parts, for electrical, and medical purposes.

The ministry said the investigation will last for one year but may be further stretched by another six months if found necessary.

Concerning the probe, a European Commission spokesperson said that the commission will closely analyse the details of the investigations and decide on further steps.

The spokesperson added that there is an expectation that China will investigate all compliance with the rights and obligations under the WTO.

This is done in the wider context of the trade conflict between China, the United States and Europe. Recently the Americans said that they were increasing tariffs on different products that are imported from China among them electric cars, computer chips and medical products.

Beyond that, the EU has launched its trade investigation into Chinese tinplate steel, which is another trade and subsidy investigation launched by the EU into Chinese exports.

A specific event that can be mentioned is the last September European Commission’s investigation as to whether it will impose extra taxes on less expensive Chinese EVs that may receive government support.

This move is also attributed to the increased oversight by the US and Europe on China’s oversupplying of its production capacity in other economies.

Chinese officials have responded to these criticisms by claiming that placing an international emphasis on China’s overcapacity is misguided.

They argue that such criticisms overlook the fact that there is a great shift in critical industries in China and that to a greater extent, Chinese companies would not be where they are without the substantial support of the state.

China launches anti-dumping probe on POM copolymers

Even though Dublin has surpassed London in securing foreign direct investment (FDI) projects for financial services in Europe in 2023, London maintains its leadership position with far more projects than any other European city – 81 projects in 2023 represent a 76 per cent increase from the year before.

This puts London way ahead of its other rival, Paris, where there is a drop of 11 per cent in new projects.

Thus, new projects executed in London doubled those of Paris according to a report furnished by EY that ensured the rising attractiveness of the UK capital despite various challenges.

Anna Anthony, the UK financial services managing partner at EY, points out that despite the challenges presented by high inflation, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical instability, the strength of the UK’s financial services has helped attract investors from around the world.

Anthony said, this is despite the stiff competition from other cities in Europe and around the world, but the UK continues to be a destination for investment.

The EY survey, which had data from 900 decision-makers, indicated that the UK accounted for 33 per cent of all financial services projects in Europe in the year 2023.

The total number of projects in the UK increased from 76 to 108 in the same corresponding period, which gives the UK a greater lead compared to France and Germany which managed to acquire total projects 39 and 38 respectively in the same period.

Even though London is on top in these times, Paris is strongly contending.

Buyers rated the French capital as the highest potential of the major European metropolises for future financial investments over three years.

This statement expresses the opinion of many Wall Street firms that today try to see Paris as London’s possible successor after Brexit.

The report puts a spotlight on a paradox: However, questions surrounding the long-term competitiveness of London continue to be raised, even though the city is still considered a prime location for the immediate delivery of financial services tasks.

London stock markets have been particular, with problems such as Brexit and the underperformance of markets exhibiting large falls in trading volumes.

A survey conducted by Bloomberg indicates that the London Stock Exchange controlled IPOs which raised slightly above $300 million of the total $12 billion raised this year, the lowest in decades.

The bad news does not seem to be ending for China. April data shows that the country's credit growth shrank for the first time, as government bond sales slowed. In addition, loan expansion has been worse than expected, which is a sign of weak demand. Aggregate financing, a broad measure of credit, decreased by almost $27.7 billion in April from the previous month.

The 2024 Work Trend Index by Microsoft and LinkedIn solidifies the prevailing notion: Artificial Intelligence is not a fad, but a technology that is changing the way people work.

Three major trends emerge out of the report, born out of a survey involving 31,000 'knowledge workers' — employees working at a desk, either in an office or remotely — across 31 countries.

1) Employees are increasingly using AI at their workplace, with at least 75 per cent of the respondents claiming to use AI for work. In fact, AI usage has nearly doubled between September 2023 and March 2024. An overwhelming percentage of employees, especially in small and medium-sized businesses, are using their own AI tools to work. Nearly 80 per cent of employees believe that AI skills will broaden their job opportunities.

2) AI is increasingly becoming the top professional skill to possess. Sixty-six per cent of corporate leaders say they won't hire someone without AI skills. In fact, companies are more likely to hire a less experienced but AI-skilled candidate, than a more experienced candidate with no AI skills. In an indication of its rising stock in the corporate world, there was a 142-fold increase in AI skills like Copilot and ChatGPT being added to LinkedIn profiles last year.

3) AI is increasingly aiding employees' creativity and productivity. The report dubs frequent AI users as 'power users', who utilise the power of prompts to save more than 30 minutes in a day. They are the ones who experiment with the power of AI to enhance their user experience. At least 92 per cent of 'power users' say that AI boosts their creativity. Over 90 per cent of them also add that the technology helps them focus on the most important work and enjoy their job.

While AI use is proliferating at a personal level, corporate leaders are still figuring out a way to scale up. A big factor hindering AI's growth in workplaces is inertia. At least 60 per cent believe that their organisation lacks a plan and vision to implement AI for revenue generation.

"The pressure to show immediate Return of Investment (ROI) is making leaders inert, even in the face of AI inevitability," notes the report. Many employers are also worried about quantifying the productivity gains of AI, which is further delaying mass adoption.

The report urges the corporate world to shun its inhibitions and embrace AI. "As we reach the hard part of this tech disruption — turning experimentation into tangible business impact — companies that face the challenge head-on will surge ahead," concludes the report.

Australia’s newest low-cost airline Bonza, on Tuesday (Apr 30) suspended all flights and entered voluntary administration, regulatory filings showed amid concerns about the viability of its business and has potentially left thousands of passengers stranded.

About the collapse of the airline

The collapse of the Australian airline came around 15 months after Bonza launched its services with the backing of 777 Partners, a United States-based investment firm.

In a statement, the budget carrier said that it suspended all services for the day amid discussions about the “ongoing viability of the business”. It also apologised to the customers who have been impacted by the decision.

“We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this and we’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian domestic aviation market,” said CEO Tim Jordan.

Bonza launched its services last year and has been the first to enter the market in Australia since 2007.

Notably, the market in Canberra is dominated by Qantas and Virgin Australia, which together control about 90 per cent of Australia’s airline market, reported Reuters.

The budget airlines, before it suspended its operations, connected small regional airports across Australia to main cities like Melbourne and Gold Coast.

Bonza had sought to shake up the country’s competitive aviation sector with cut-price tickets. However, the airline has previously garnered criticism due to flight cancellations and the suspension of some routes.

Additionally, speculation was also rife about the Bonza’s future after its reported inability to secure access to take-off and landing spots in Sydney, which is said to be a lucrative market.

Cancellations and control of flights

The announcement prompted the Australian government to set up a hotline for passengers who have been affected.

Meanwhile, the country’s Transport Minister Catherine King said that she has also spoken to other airlines about helping those stranded and both Qantas and Virgin have agreed to offer assistance.

King also said the government’s priority is to ensure stranded Australians reach home safely and quickly.

A report by Reuters citing an anonymous source said AIP Capital had begun to take control of Bonza’s four Boeing 737-Max-8 aircraft just after midnight on Tuesday.

When asked if the government would bail out Bonza, King told state broadcaster ABC that the government’s role is to “ensure that we have a strong aviation sector within Australia” but bailing the airlines out “is not something that the government has before us.”
