Dozens of people were killed in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Thursday in a blaze that ripped through apartment buildings where chemicals were stored.

Fires and building collapses are common in the country -- particularly in the multi-billion dollar garment industry -- where building regulations are lax and volatile chemicals are often improperly kept.

Here are some of the worst incidents in Bangladesh.

Rana Plaza collapse

At least 1,130 people died when Dhaka's Rana Plaza nine-storey factory complex collapsed in April 2013 -- one of the world's worst industrial tragedies.

Another 2,000 people were injured in the disaster, which highlighted the failure of many top Western fashion brands to protect workers in the poor developing countries where their goods are manufactured.

In 2016 a court ordered 38 people, including owner Sohel Rana, to face trial for murder for falsely certifying the factory complex as safe. Proceedings have dragged however, and prosecutors say a verdict could take five more years.

Chemical fire

Bangladesh's deadliest industrial blaze was in June 2010, when 117 people died in a fire that ripped through one of Dhaka's most densely populated areas.

The fire -- fuelled by a chemical warehouse -- destroyed several multi-storey apartment buildings and gutted a string of small shops.

Industrial blaze

A fire swept through a nine-story garment factory near Dhaka in November 2012 killing 111 workers. An investigation later found it was caused by sabotage and managers at the plant prevented victims from escaping.

"I broke open an exhaust fan in the second floor and jumped to the roof of a shed next to the factory," said one survivor. "I broke my hand but survived somehow."

Packaging factory fire

Thirty-one people were killed when a fire triggered by a boiler explosion tore through a packaging factory north of the capital in September 2016.

The blaze is thought to have spread quickly because of chemicals stored on the ground floor.

Faulty boiler

An industrial boiler exploded at a factory killing 13 people and causing part of the six-storey building to collapse in July 2017.

Most of the plant's 5,000 workers were off for the Eid holidays when the boiler exploded during maintenance work.

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has announced a country-wide ‘Swachh Building Competition’ under which various government buildings will be rated for their cleanliness. The competition will be held from September 23-29.

According to the CPWD, the competition is being organised under ‘Swachhta Hi Seva Campaign’ which aims at generating greater public participation towards cleanliness and is being organised in the run-up to the fourth anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2, 2018.

The CPWD, the central government’s largest construction agency, said various government buildings will be rated for their cleanliness. “During the competition, various buildings under each zone shall be rated for their cleanliness against standard benchmarks…”CPWD said in an office memorandum.

A simple assessment of cleanliness in common areas of the buildings will be conducted over a week’s period and scores marked by a team of assessors. Winners will be suitably rewarded through commendation certificates or medals or trophies, it also stated.

“Each common area such as corridor/lobby at different floors/levels will be separately assessed and averaged out, to get the cleanliness score of the building concerned,” it added.

A massive fire broke out in Mumbai's Patel Chambers during the wee hours on Saturday which led to a part of the building to collapse. Around 18 fire engines were rushed to the sport immediately, two men were injured in the process.

The level-4 fire has now been brought under control, the fire department said.

"Two firefighters had minor injuries, rest everybody is safe. We deployed 16 fire engines, 11 tankers and 150 fire officers. The situation is under control," fire officer Prabhat Rahangdale told media here.

However, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

As per the fire department chief, the building had been vacant for years.

"This building has been vacant for around four years. It seems like a very old building. The staircase inside had collapsed long ago, so there was no way for us to go inside. It is a very congested area, so chances were that the fire could spread to neighbouring buildings as well. We are investigating the cause of the fire," Prabhat added.

Moroccan police have crushed an escape attempt by inmates at a juvenile detention centre in Casablanca, resulting in nine detainees being injured, the prison service said on Friday.

"The Ain Sebaa rehabilitation centre was the scene of rioting" by prisoners on Thursday night, the General Directorate of Prisons and Re-integration said.

Detainees at the centre in the Northeast of Morocco's biggest city set fire to beds in a bid to attract staff, attack them and try to escape, it said. The prisoners tried and failed to break into a weapons store, but managed to get out of the main building and set alight a prison bus, it said. They attacked and lightly wounded several staff. Police then intervened to put down the riot.

An AFP photographer on the scene saw fire and smoke coming from the centre, which was surrounded by security forces. Videos posted online appeared to show a large explosion at the centre and a burning bus, with the sound of gunshots and police sirens. Local news websites said witnesses had heard the sound of gunfire coming from the facility.

The prison service said nine detainees were hurt in the incident, although it was not clear whether from smoke inhalation or during clashes with the police.

The prison service said it would open an enquiry to determine who was behind the incident. Moroccan prisons are chronically overcrowded, housing some 65,000 detainees in facilities with a capacity of just 30,000, according to the Ministry of Justice.
