Jayson Tatum, on Saturday night, drained a three-pointer in the final seconds as the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 100--107 in a wild game. Boston star, however, didn't have a great game to write home about but his clutch shot took his team over the line in a thrilling finish.

Tatum finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in the game. The Celtics were able to get away with the win despite 76ers' Joel Embiid gave a thunderous performance, scoring 41 points, the highest in the game.

Apart from the points, Embiid also threw a magnificent three-quarter shot after Tatum's go-ahead three-pointer but couldn't release the ball before the buzzer.

Tatum caught a pass from his teammate Marcus Smart with 5.9 seconds left on the clock and shot a perfect 3-pointer after stopping at the top of the key. Tatum went 7-of-17 while shooting but stepped up when his team needed him the most.

Speaking to ESPN after the game, Tatum agreed that he wasn't at his best and was trying to find a way.

"Find a way to win the game," Tatum said. "I wasn't playing my best, was just trying to impact winning on both ends, find a way. ... It's tough to win in this league. It showed our resilience tonight," he added.

The game was certainly over after Tatum's eventual winner but not without a bit of drama. 76ers' P.J. Tucker quickly inbounded the ball after Boston took the lead and Joel Embiid went ahead with his Hail Mary shot in an effort to tie the game.

NBA: Jayson Tatum's three-pointer headlines wild finish as Celtics hold off 76ers

The Boston Celtics suspended head coach Ime Udoka for the entire 2022-23 NBA season on Thursday for "violations of team policies." "A decision about his future with the Celtics beyond this season will be made at a later date," the team said in a statement. "The suspension takes effect immediately."

The Celtics did not specify what Udoka's policy violations were. ESPN and The Athletic reported that the 45-year-old Nigerian-American had a consensual relationship with a female member of the Celtics staff that broke the franchise's code of conduct.

The punishment, among the harshest ever issued to an NBA head coach, comes with the Celtics' pre-season training camp due to open next week. In a statement obtained by ESPN, Udoka said he accepted the Celtics' decision. "I want to apologize to our players, fans, the entire Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down," Udoka said. "I am sorry for putting the team in this difficult situation, and I accept the team's decision.

"Out of respect for everyone involved, I will have no further comment." Assistant coach Joe Mazzulla will step in as interim coach for the 2022-23 campaign, ESPN reported. Udoka's top assistant last season, Will Hardy, departed in June to become coach of the Utah Jazz. Udoka replaced Brad Stevens as coach last season after Stevens was promoted to president of basketball operations following the departure of Danny Ainge. Udoka played seven seasons in the NBA, the last four with San Antonio before his playing career ended in 2011.

He had stints as an assistant coach with San Antonio, Philadelphia and Brooklyn before taking charge of the Celtics in June 2021 and had an impressive debut season. Under Udoka's guidance Boston developed the top defense in the NBA and closed last season on a 28-7 run.

- NBA scandals -

The turmoil adds uncertainty to the upcoming Celtics' campaign after what had been an encouraging off-season that included the acquisition of Malcolm Brogdon and veteran free agent Danilo Gallinari. Gallinari tore a ligament in his left knee playing for Italy in a Basketball World Cup qualifier in August and will miss the season. Celtics Center Rob Williams is expected to miss the start of the season after knee surgery.

The affair is also another scandal for the NBA as the October 18 start of the season approaches. Embattled Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver, banned for a year and fined $10 million by the NBA for racist misogynist remarks and workplace bullying, said Wednesday he will sell the Suns and the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury.

That announcement came after NBA stars including the Suns Chris Paul and the Los Angeles Lakers LeBron James denounced the NBA punishment meted out to Sarver as too lenient. Sarver also came under pressure from sponsors, with Suns backer PayPal saying it would not renew its deal with the team if Sarver returned after his suspension.

The family statement also added, "Bill's wife, Jeannine, and his many friends and family thank you for keeping Bill in your prayers. Perhaps you'll relive one or two of the golden moments he gave us, or recall his trademark laugh as he delighted in explaining the real story behind how those moments unfolded. And we hope each of us can find a new way to act or speak up with Bill's uncompromising, dignified and always constructive commitment to principle. That would be one last, and lasting, win for our beloved #6."

Russell redefined the way the game of basketball was played. He brought an intense rebounding and defensive technique that rivalled those playing flashy basketball. Russell averaged 15.1 points and 22.5 rebounds per game for his career.

However, the 11-time NBA champion and a 12-time All-Star had a deeper impact, not only on the basketball generations to come but also on the social fabric of America.

At a time when racism was rife in the US, Bill became a role model, who was idolised by both whites and non-whites alike. Russell attended Dr Martin Luther King's iconic 'I have a dream' speech whilst sitting in the first row and later marched with him.

He also supported Muhammad Ali when the pugilist was targeted for his views on racism. Bill was such a trailblazer that he became the first African-American coach of an NBA franchise.

Apart from leading the Celtics to numerous titles, Bill also won an Olympic gold medal in 1956 with the USA whilst leading the team. In 2011, the five-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the Obama government.

Andrew Wiggins scored 26 points as the Golden State Warriors battled past the Boston Celtics 104-94 to move within one win of a seventh NBA championship crown on Monday.

With Stephen Curry having a rare off-night after his 43-point game four heroics, Wiggins seized control to lead a balanced Golden State offensive effort which leaves the Warriors 3-2 up in the best-of-seven series. Wiggins delivered a huge performance at both ends of the Warriors' Chase Center court, shooting 12-of-23 while hauling in 13 rebounds with two steals and a block.

The Warriors can clinch the championship when the series heads back to Boston for game six on Thursday. "We have two cracks at getting one win, but we also know how difficult it's going to be," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "Nobody's celebrating but we are excited to be in this spot and we want to take advantage of it."

Kerr led the tributes for Wiggins, the Canadian former No.1 draft pick who has steadily become an integral part of the Warriors set-up since joining the franchise two years ago. "He loves the challenge. He loves the competition. And he's found such a crucial role on our team, and I think that empowers him," Kerr said. "He knows how much we need him, so he's been fantastic."

Wiggins led the Warriors scorers while Klay Thompson provided support with 21 points including five three-pointers. Gary Payton II (15 points) and Jordan Poole (14) both made double-digits from the bench.

Curry, the Warriors' talisman and front-runner for NBA Finals MVP, chipped in with 16 points but shot only 7-of-22 from the field, going 0/9 from three-point distance. It was the first time in Curry's playoff career he has failed to score a three-pointer and the first time he has drawn a blank from beyond the arc in any NBA game since 2018.

"I think Steph was probably due for a game like this," Kerr said. "But we've got a lot of talent and a lot of depth that can make up for that, and the guys did a good job of that tonight."

Warriors star Draymond Green, who had an improved performance despite fouling out in the fourth quarter, said Curry's display was good news for Golden State. "He's going to be livid going into game six, and that's exactly what we need," Green said.

Golden State Warriors on verge of NBA title as Andrew Wiggins' 26 points punishes Boston Celtics

Stephen Curry produced a dazzling 43-point display as the Golden State Warriors battled past the Boston Celtics 107-97 to level the NBA Finals series at 2-2 on Friday. With the Warriors needing a victory at Boston's TD Garden to avoid going down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, Curry delivered one of the best performances of his glittering career to reignite Golden State's hopes of a seventh championship.

Curry had entered game four with concerns swirling over his health after suffering a knock to his foot in the Warriors' game three defeat on Wednesday. But the 34-year-old two-time NBA Most Valuable Player emphatically laid to rest any doubts about his fitness as he single-handedly hauled Golden State back into the finals with game five back in San Francisco on Monday.

Curry finished with 43 points, 10 rebounds and four assists on a night when Golden State again struggled to find their offensive rhythm for long periods against a powerful Boston line-up.

Klay Thompson added 18 points for the Warriors while Andrew Wiggins produced 17 points and 16 rebounds in a crucial contribution. Jordan Poole added 14 from the bench.

"A lot of pride in our group, a lot of talk over the last 48 hours about how we can get back into this series," an elated Curry said afterwards. "It's crazy because I still feel we can play a little bit better. But to win on the road and get home court advantage back, is big for this group. We've been here six times, we've got a lot of experience of staying confident and composed.

"I'm just thankful for everyone on our team because we brought a lot of toughness and physicality tonight. "We knew how big this game was. That five-and-a-half hour flight home got a little better after tonight."

- Green struggles -

Warriors coach Steve Kerr, meanwhile, took the bold decision to remove Draymond Green from the fray during the fourth quarter before returning him to the court for the closing passage of play. Green again struggled on offense with only two points but finished with nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

But the undeniable man of the hour was once again Curry, a model of clear-headed composure as bedlam raged around Boston’s raucous arena.

"Just stunning," was how Kerr described Curry's performance. "The physicality out there is, you know, pretty dramatic. I mean, Boston's got obviously, best defense in the league.

"Huge and powerful at every position, and for Steph to that kind of pressure all game long and still be able to defend at the other end when they are coming at him shows you, I think, this is the strongest physically he's ever been in his career, and it's allowing him to do what he's doing."

Boston coach Ime Udoka was left pondering what might have been. The Celtics must now win at least one more game in San Francisco -- where they won game one -- to win a record 18th NBA crown.

"Had our opportunities tonight, especially when we did have a five-, six-point lead," Udoka said. "It felt like we didn't have our best possessions, and kind of let them back in the game, whether it was turnovers or poor offense.

"It could have been an easier road, obviously, if you get the win tonight. But it is what it is. We're 2-2 now. We know we can do it. We've done it before. Keep your head up and let's go get one on the road."

A closely-fought contest saw neither side lead by more than seven points until Golden State's decisive late burst in the final minutes secured a 10-point victory. Boston had led by four points at 94-90 with just under five minutes remaining before a Wiggins layup and a Thompson three-pointer put Golden State up 95-94. Curry then extended the lead with a layup to make it 97-94 before driving in the dagger with a three-pointer to leave the Warriors 100-94 ahead.

Al Horford cut the deficit for Boston with a corner three, but Kevon Looney’s layup restored the Warriors' five-point cushion.

Curry then closed out the game, cleverly drawing fouls from Boston to nail five points from the free throw line. Jayson Tatum led the Boston scorers with 23 points while Jaylen Brown finished with 21 points. Marcus Smart added 18 points and Derrick White chipped in with 16.

We've been here six times, we've got a lot of experience of staying confident and composed. "I'm just thankful for everyone on our team because we brought a lot of toughness and physicality tonight. "We knew how big this game was. That five-and-a-half hour flight home got a little better after tonight." - Green struggles - Warriors coach Steve Kerr, meanwhile, took the bold decision to remove Draymond Green from the fray during the fourth quarter before returning him to the court for the closing passage of play. "Huge and powerful at every position, and for Steph to that kind of pressure all game long and still be able to defend at the other end when they are coming at him shows you, I think, this is the strongest physically he's ever been in his career, and it's allowing him to do what he's doing." Boston coach Ime Udoka was left pondering what might have been. Keep your head up and let's go get one on the road." A closely-fought contest saw neither side lead by more than seven points until Golden State's decisive late burst in the final minutes secured a 10-point victory.

Boston Celtics beat Golden State Warriors, take 2-1 lead in NBA Finals

American investor Stephen Pagliuca hinted on Tuesday at being prepared to divest his interest in Italian club Atalanta to buy Premier League side Chelsea as he prepares to submit a bid this week.

Pagliuca, who is the joint owner of NBA team Boston Celtics, agreed to buy into Serie A club Atalanta in February, buying 55% of La Dea, the holding owned by Italy`s Percassi family, which owns around 86% of the club.

"Later this week, we will submit a substantial and credible bid proposal – one that we expect will meet the respective requirements and regulations of the Premier League, UK Government and UEFA," Pagliuca said in a statement.

"We pledge to honour our commitment to credibility and good guardianship of Chelsea Football Club from day one."
Under European soccer governing body UEFA`s rules, two clubs participating in the same competition cannot be directly or indirectly controlled by the same entity or managed by the same person.

If two or more clubs do not meet this criteria, only one may be admitted to the competition based on sporting merit and ranking of associations -- in this case, Chelsea.

Both Atalanta and Chelsea played in the Champions League this season, with the Serie A side knocked out in the group stages. Chelsea trail Real Madrid 3-1 in the quarter-finals ahead of Tuesday`s second leg.

The American said his first focus was to invest in the team so they could continue competing for trophies such as the Premier League, Champions League or the Women`s Super League.

"(The Women`s Super League is) the only Super League we intend competing in, for the record," he said, referring to last year`s plans by Europe`s top clubs for a breakaway league fell through.

Pagliuca added he was committed to having Chelsea remain at Stamford Bridge and was "inspired to renovate or redevelop the stadium".

"Chelsea is a world-class team, in a world-class city, with world-class fans: it deserves a world-class stadium," he said.

Pagliuca`s bid is one of many short-listed to buy the London club. The Ricketts family, who own the Chicago Cubs baseball team, is another and they strengthened their bid team with the appointment of Lord Karan Bilimoria, the founder of Cobra Beer.

"The move will further boost the bid team`s credentials and its connection with UK business, sport and politics," they said in a statement.

"Lord Bilimoria would join the Board of Chelsea as a Director if the bid is successful. He will act as an ambassador and support the club`s philanthropic programmes."

Bilimoria said he has been a Chelsea season ticket holder for many years.

"When Tom Ricketts approached me to discuss a leading role in his bid group, there was no way I could refuse," he said.

Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca confirms bid to buy Premier League club Chelsea

Boston Celtics games were abruptly pulled from the Chinese internet Thursday after a center on the team, Enes Kanter, said on social media that the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, was a “brutal dictator,” citing his government’s repressive policies in Tibet.

The incident could spell fresh trouble for the NBA in China. The league has millions of devoted fans there but has also just spent two years mending its image in the country after a Houston Rockets executive tweeted support in 2019 for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

That tweet, by Daryl Morey, who now works for the Philadelphia 76ers, was quickly deleted, though not before setting off an uproar in China. Sponsors in the country severed ties and the state-run broadcaster stopped airing games, leading to financial fallout that the league estimated cost it hundreds of millions of dollars.

Geopolitical tensions and rising nationalism have made China a minefield for multinational companies, whose access to the country’s 1.4 billion consumers is often contingent on not taking the “wrong” stance on issues such as Beijing’s rule in Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang.

An NBA representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a video that was posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday, Kanter spoke into the camera for nearly three minutes and decried what he called a “cultural genocide” in Tibet.

“I say, ‘Shame on the Chinese government,’” he said, wearing a T-shirt with the image of the Dalai Lama, whom Beijing considers a criminal separatist. “The Chinese dictatorship is erasing Tibetan identity and culture.”

Another social media post by Kanter on Wednesday showed off sneakers emblazoned with Tibetan flag motifs and the words “Free Tibet.”

By Thursday, recent Celtics games were marked as unavailable for replay through Tencent, the Chinese internet giant that has partnered with the NBA to stream its games in the country. The website for Tencent Sports also indicated that upcoming Celtics games would not be livestreamed.

Tencent Sports has not been livestreaming games involving the 76ers, either. The team hired Morey last year as president of basketball operations.

A Tencent spokeswoman declined to comment.

On the Chinese social platform Weibo, a Celtics fan account declared that it would immediately stop posting about the team.

The account told its 615,000 Weibo followers: “Resolutely resist any behavior that damages national harmony and the dignity of the motherland!”

China considers Tibet part of its historical empire, although the authorities have long confronted protests against their rule there. The Communist Party under Xi has intensified efforts to defray ethnic tensions by encouraging the region’s residents to assimilate into Chinese society and making Mandarin Chinese the dominant language in public life.

Kanter, who is of Turkish heritage, has been an outspoken critic of Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkish prosecutors have sought Kanter’s arrest, and his Turkish passport has been revoked. He has expressed concern that Turkish agents might kill him overseas.

The best-of-seven series between both the teams now stands at 3-2, with Celtics in lead.

They dominated defensively to hold the Raptors to 20 per cent shooting in the first quarter and got a lead of 25-11 in the opening period.

In the second quarter, the Celtics scored 37 points that two more than the Raptors managed in all of the first half.

By the halftime, the Raptors trailed by 62-35. Despite a noticeable uptick of energy to start the third, there was too much ground to make up.

"The job isn't done," said Jaylen Brown, who led all scorers with 27 points. He grabbed six rebounds and made three of Boston's five steals. "We've got to come out and play with the same intensity."

Kemba Walker was the star of the match as he added 21 points, four rebounds and seven assists, Jayson Tatum delivered 18 points, and 10 rebounds, Daniel Theis and reserve Brad Wanamaker scored 15 apiece, and Marcus Smart Chipped in 12 for the Celtics.

Fred VeanVleet scored the most (18 points) for the Raptors, followed by Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam, who scored 10 apiece.

"Our offense, we didn't make shots, we weren't aggressive enough," Lowry said. "They were very comfortable from the jump. We weren't as assertive as we should have been."

Lowry denied that the Raptors were feeling the effects of the every-other-day schedule in the NBA's quarantine bubble in Orlando, Florida.

"Nope," he said when asked if fatigue played a part. "We just didn't play well enough."
