<p>The ocean surface temperatures have increased by around 0.24°C each decade since the 1980s at the BATS monitoring station. The findings show that the ocean is around 1°C warmer now than it was 40 years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers also found that ocean temperatures have&nbsp;risen more sharply in the last four years compared to&nbsp;the previous decades. Not just warmer, the water has gotten more saline at the surface also.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We suspect this is part of the broader, more recent trends and changes in ocean temperatures and environmental changes, like atmospheric warming and having had the warmest years globally," Bates said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The data showed that the amount of oxygen available to living aquatic organisms has decreased by 6 per cent in over the last 40 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bates explained: "The ocean chemistry of surface waters in the 2020s is now outside of the seasonal range observed in the 1980s and the ocean ecosystem now lives in a different chemical environment to that experienced a few decades ago. These changes are due to the uptake of anthropogenic CO2 from the atmosphere."&nbsp;</p>

<p>More than 28,000 homes and businesses had lost electricity by early evening, according to electricity company Belco.</p>

<p>Flights were cancelled and some residents in the capital, Hamilton, covered windows with wooden planks and metal sheeting.</p>

<p>Belco said it would begin restoring power on Thursday morning.</p>

<p>Bermudan officials warned residents to stay off roads and prepare for possible tornadoes as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/over-1-million-told-to-evacuate-homes-as-hurricane-florence-bears-down-on-us-east-coast-164990">hurricane</a> picked up forward speed and weather conditions worsened.</p>

<p>The officials also reported that people who had sought refuge in an emergency housing shelter at a public high school had to be relocated after windows were damaged.</p>

<p>The storm packed 120 mile-per-hour (193 kph) winds and picked up speed during the afternoon, moving at 20 mph (31 kph). Humberto was a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, the NHC said.</p>

<p>Bermuda National Disaster Coordinator Steve Cosham warned that the storm could topple trees and rip down power lines, while tornadoes could damage buildings.</p>

<p>Resident Saivo Goater placed boards across the sliding glass doors of his two-story dwelling, remembering back-to-back hurricanes in 2014 that ripped off parts of his roof.</p>

<p>"I don't want to go through that again," Goater said. "It's better to be safe than sorry."</p>

<p>Officials ended government ferry services and were closing a major road leading to the airport on Wednesday evening. They also opened a shelter at a high school with room for 100 people.</p>

<p>Schools were closed and ambulances on standby, a witness said.</p>

<p>For more than a decade the arrangement has allowed Google owner Alphabet&nbsp;to enjoy an effective tax rate in the single digits on its non-US profits, around a quarter the average tax rate in its overseas markets.</p>

<p>The subsidiary in the Netherlands is used to shift revenue from royalties earned outside the United States to Google Ireland Holdings, an affiliate based in Bermuda, where companies pay no income tax.</p>

<p>The tax strategy, known as the "Double Irish, Dutch Sandwich", is legal and allows Google to avoid triggering US income taxes or European withholding taxes on the funds, which represent the bulk of its overseas profits.</p>

<p>However, under pressure from the European Union and the United States, Ireland in 2014 decided to phase out the arrangement, ending Google's tax advantages in 2020.</p>

<p>Google Netherlands Holdings BV paid 3.4 million euros in taxes in the Netherlands in 2017, the documents showed, on a gross profit of 13.6 million euros.</p>
