US fighter jets&nbsp;were scrambled&nbsp;as the two Tu-95MS strategic missile-carrying bombers came face-to-face with American warplanes. Moscow said its hulking ‘Bear’ strategic bombers “appeared near the coast of Alaska” on an 11-hour flight over the Bering Sea. “At certain stages the missile carriers were accompanied by fighter jets of foreign countries,” the&nbsp;Russian defence ministry admitted.

Moscow also released footage in which a warplane from the Alaska Air National Guard, part of the United States Air Force, could be seen, along with a Su-30SM fighter jet.

“Two Tu-95MS strategic missile-carrying bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces’ long-range aviation carried out a scheduled flight in the airspace over the neutral waters of the Bering Sea near the western coast of Alaska,” said the defence ministry. “The flight lasted over 11 hours. Crews of Su-30SM of the Aerospace Forces provided fighter support.”

However, Russia said it didn’t violate any international law&nbsp;and&nbsp;the mission was&nbsp;carried out&nbsp;“in strict compliance with international rules of airspace use.”

It was&nbsp;not clear&nbsp;which other foreign nation dispatched its fighter jets to intercept Russian bombers&nbsp;but&nbsp;media reports suggest it could be&nbsp;Canada,&nbsp;because of its proximity to Alaska.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed&nbsp;Thursday&nbsp;the planes remained in international airspace.

“The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace,” the statement said.&nbsp;

Russian Defence Ministry released a video showing long-range strategic bombers taking off and flying over the Bering sea. Two tu-95ms aircraft performed a 13-hour flight over the neutral waters near the western coast of Alaska. As per the Russian Defence Ministry, Su-30sm and Su-35sm fighter jets escorted the tu-95 bombers. The Tu-95 entered service with the Russian military in the 1950s and has since been extensively modernised.

Images captured minutes after the fireball disintegrated in the atmosphere show the shadow of the meteor's trail cast on top of clouds, elongated by the sun's low position.&nbsp;

The super-heated air turns the clouds to an orange tint in the meteor's wake.

The photographs were taken by two NASA instruments onboard the Terra satellite.&nbsp;

A still image was taken at 2350 GMT, while five of the of nine cameras on the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument took another sequence of photos at 2355, which NASA collated into a GIF that shows the orange trail

NASA estimates that the meteor occurred at 23:48 GMT.

Meteors are rocks from outer space that become incandescent upon entering the earth's atmosphere as a result of friction. They are also known as shooting stars. Pieces which survive intact and hit the ground are known as meteorites.

It was the most powerful explosion in the atmosphere since the fireball that burst over the Russian town of Chelyabinsk in 2013. That was 440 kilotons, and left 1,500 people injured, mostly from glass flying out of smashed windows. &nbsp;

This time around, the blast occurred over waters, hundreds of kilometres off the Russian coast.&nbsp;

The first photo of the event was taken by a Japanese weather satellite and published only this week.
