<p>Belgium detained four people, including a former Member of European Parliament (MEP), on Friday (December 9) in connection with a probe into suspected bribery by Qatar at the European parliament.&nbsp;Belgium's federal prosecutor made announcement of the arrests after 600,000 euros in cash were discovered during 16 police raids in Brussels.</p>

<p>Prosecutors have not specified identities of those detained but they've said that a 'Gulf' state was involved in the bribery.</p>

<p>AFP quoted a source close to the case who said that the probe and detainment were connected to suspected&nbsp;attempts by Qatar to corrupt an Italian Socialist who was a member of the European parliament from 2004 to 2019.</p>

<p>The four people detained were either Italian citizens or originally came from Italy, the source said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Today's searches have enabled investigators to recover about 600,000 euros in cash," the prosecutors said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Computer equipment and mobile phones were also seized. These elements will be analysed as part of the investigations."</p>

<p>The statement said investigators "suspected a Gulf country (of influencing) the economic and political decisions of the European parliament".</p>

<p>It alleged this was done "by paying large sums of money or offering large gifts to" influential figures in the European parliament.</p>

<p>"Four people were arrested for questioning and may be brought before the investigating judge," prosecutors said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A syndicate of 165 people, belonging to a Belgian village, won a collective jackpot of €143 million ($151.18 million) in the EuroMillions lottery.&nbsp;The residents from Antwerp province's Olmen had made equal payments for purchasing the tickets at their local newsagent. As per the Belgian National Lottery, each resident won around €868,000 ($9,17,967) in the lottery.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tuesday's draw saw more than 27 million entries. The prize money of the final jackpot was €142,897,164 ($15,11,83,056), said EuroMillions.</p>

<p>The spokesperson said that the lottery win is the "best Christmas present". &nbsp;The newsagents' owner, who has been the organiser of various group pots in the past, said that he repeated the news of lottery win "five to six times" as his customers were unable to believe the win.</p>

<p>"They all played together in the same newsagent in Olmen, where they each invested €15. It is not the first time that De Pershoek organises this kind of group pot, but it is the first time that they win so much," she stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the capital city of Brussels, the police were forced to detain over a dozen people while eight were arrested in the Northern city of Antwerp.</p>

<p>The arrests took place after the police deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the unruly mob of supporters that had gathered to celebrate Morocco's victory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Those are not fans, they are rioters. Moroccan fans are there to celebrate. There were also disturbances in the city of Antwerp and Liege," said&nbsp;Brussels mayor Philippe Close while urging people top stay away from the city centre.&nbsp;</p>
