The films "Sueño en Otro Idioma" (I Dream in Another Language) and "La region Salvaje" (The Savage Region) were the big winners at the 60th edition of Mexico's Ariel awards in this capital.

Tuesday night's red carpet outside Mexico City's Palace of Fine Arts was lined with ribbons that read "It's not just three, it's all of us," alluding to the three film students kidnapped and allegedly murdered in Tonala, a city in western Jalisco state last March.

The stage was later taken over by speakers demanding that authorities halt the wave of violence scourging the country and giving reminders of the thousands of forced disappearances and murders happening each year throughout Mexico.

Ernesto Contreras' "I Dream in Another Language" was nominated for 16 awards and took home six statuettes, including Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, Best Photography and Best Actor, which went to Eligio Melendez.

Amat Escalante's "The Savage Region" was awarded Best Special Effects, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing, Best Direction and Best Actress in a Minor Role, going to Bernarda Trueba.

Karina Gidi took home the Ariel for Best Actress for her role in the film "Los adioses" (The Goodbyes) and Andres Almeida was awarded Best Actor in a Minor Role for "Tiempo compartido" (Timeshare).

As many as 114 contenders participated in the latest edition of the Ariel awards, including 58 feature films and 73 shorts, as well as 13 Ibero-American films.

Oscar nominees: Full list

Nominations for the Golden Globes will be unveiled Monday with critics expecting musical "La La Land" to lead the pack ahead of "Moonlight," "Manchester by the Sea" and "Lion."

In a departure from last year`s awards calendar, the announcements come before the influential Screen Actors Guild nominations, making them the first major bellwether of momentum going into the Oscars race.

The Globe nominations, set to be made at the crack of dawn in Beverly Hills, are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), a group of entertainment journalists who are wined and dined by publicists.

There has been controversy in the past over the category placement of films, with last year`s inclusion of "The Martian" and "Joy" in comedy/musical raising eyebrows.

But awards prediction site Gold Derby has Damien Chazelle`s "La La Land" -- uncontroversially both a musical and a romantic comedy -- comfortably in the lead in several races.

"Normally the Globe voters like to spread the wealth among a lot of different films, but I could honestly see it winning the film award and for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone," managing director Chris Beachum told AFP.

"It`s got a very good shot at `directing` and maybe the score or song categories -- it could do really well."

Experts say Kenneth Lonergan`s unflinching "Manchester by the Sea," which has won acclaim for its central performance by Casey Affleck, has been getting the most recent attention on the drama side.

Another frontrunner is Barry Jenkins`s coming-of-age story "Moonlight," with cast members Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali in with a shout for acting nominations.

"Lion," Garth Davis`s drama about a teenager adopted by an Australian family who searches for his long-lost blood relatives using Google Earth, is also expected to earn several nominations, including in acting for Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman.

The Globes will be the year`s first big test of Hollywood`s tolerance of scandal, with Nate Parker`s "The Birth of a Nation" seen as firm awards material until news emerged of a historical acquittal over rape allegations by a woman who ended up committing suicide.

"Will they separate the art from the artist? Will the film be able to stand on its own or will the very mixed reviews of it sink its chances?" writes Eric Anderson of the AwardsWatch.com blog.

Denzel Washington, nominated on seven occasions, looks a good bet to earn a first directing nomination for "Fences" but faces competition from "Silence" director Martin Scorsese who won in 2012 for "Hugo."

Emily Blunt could get a sixth acting nomination for "The Girl on the Train" while French screen siren Isabelle Huppert has turned heads with her commanding lead in Paul Verhoeven`s "Elle."

Viola Davis ("Fences"), Ruth Negga ("Loving") and Natalie Portman ("Jackie") are all strong contenders for this category, however.

Among the television prizes, FX`s "Atlanta," about two cousins trying to make it big in hip hop, looks a good bet for best musical/comedy after earning acclaim for its ten-episode debut season in the fall.

HBO black comedy "Divorce," should also be in the running, as should its star Sarah Jessica Parker, who already has four Golden Globes for "Sex in the City."

The 74th Golden Globe Awards will air on NBC live coast-to-coast from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Sunday, January 8 from 5:00-8:00 pm PT (0100-0400 GMT Monday), with talk show host Jimmy Fallon presenting.

Films 'Moonlight,' 'Manchester by the Sea' and 'Lion' are also front-runners for the award

Nominations for the Golden Globes will be unveiled Monday with critics expecting musical "La La Land" to lead the pack ahead of "Moonlight," "Manchester by the Sea" and "Lion." In a departure from last year`s awards calendar, the announcements come before the influential Screen Actors Guild nominations, making them the first major bellwether of momentum going into the Oscars race. India's Olympic medal winners to be conferred with Khel Ratna, 15 others to get Arjuna award

Michael Cimino, whose roller-coaster career as a Hollywood film director included Oscar-winner 'The Deer Hunter' and legendary box office flop 'Heaven's Gate', has died, US media reported. He was aged 77.

The success of 'The Deer Hunter', a 1978 film about the Vietnam War starring Robert De Niro, made Cimino one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood. The film won five Academy Awards, including best picture and best director.

But he followed up in 1980 with 'Heaven's Gate', an epic Western that New York Times critic Vincent Canby called "an unqualified disaster". The film's budget went way over at $36 million, three times the average cost of a movie then.

Cimino's career never fully recovered.

"He went from a big Oscar film to suddenly being a pariah - everybody's whipping boy," Kris Kristofferson, who starred in the film, told the Los Angeles Times in 2004. "Everybody who didn't get to do a film blamed 'Heaven's Gate,' saying all the money went to 'Heaven's Gate'."

Born in New York City to a wealthy family, Cimino earned a master's degree in architecture at Yale University. He was a well-known director of TV commercials before directing his first movie, "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot," a crime drama starring Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges, in 1974.

After the flop of 'Heaven's Gate', Cimino's comeback film in 1985, 'Year of the Dragon', starring Mickey Rourke as a New York City cop, failed to excite neither moviegoers nor critics.

He followed up with 'The Sicilian', based on a Mario Puzo novel and 'Desperate Hours', a remake of a Humphrey Bogart film about a fugitive, starring Rourke and Anthony Hopkins. Both films were panned by critics and largely ignored by filmgoers.

His final Hollywood film, 1996's 'The Sunchaser', a drama about a doctor, played by Woody Harrelson, who is kidnapped by a dying patient, didn't fare any better and marked the end of Cimino's career.

US media said Cimino died on Saturday, but that the cause of death was unknown.
