<p>A small asteroid collided with Earth on Wednesday and burnt up over the Philippines. The European Space Agency (ESA) said that the asteroid was 3-foot (1-metre) long and struck the atmosphere around 12:46 p.m. ET on September 4 above the western Pacific Ocean near Luzon Island.</p>

<p>Named 2024 RW1, the steroid was discovered by research technologist Jacqueline Fazekas with the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey, just hours before it collided. <p>Geochemist Mario Fischer-Gödde of the University of Cologne in Germany along with his colleagues measured five isotopes, or forms, of ruthenium in the KPg rock layers, as well as in five impact craters that occurred between 36 million and 470 million years ago and in Earth-based platinum ores.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Our lab in Cologne is one of the rare labs that can do these measurements," Fischer-Godde stated adding&nbsp;"and it was the first time such study techniques were used on impact debris layers."</p>

<p>Ruthenium is a platinum-group element, rarely found in Earth’s crust but quite abundant in asteroids and other space rocks, just like iridium. However, the relative abundance of ruthenium isotopes varies among space objects depending on where they originate.</p>

This belt was also the origin of the five non-Chicxulub impactors. <p>A warning was issued by NASA after they spotted a 100-foot&nbsp;asteroid&nbsp;named&nbsp;2024 NB2 which is about to make an extremely close flyby Earth on Saturday (July 13).</p>

<p>The aeroplane-sized asteroid is travelling at a stunning speed of 47,921 kilometres per hour. Even though it will be very close to the Earth, scientists believe that it won't act as an immediate threat to the planet.</p>

<p>“The term ‘Potentially Hazardous Asteroid’ (PHA) is a precise formal definition, referring to minor planets larger than approximately 140 metres [459 feet] that can come within 7.5 million km [4.6 million miles] from the Earth,” said Gianluca Masi, who is an astrophysicist and scientific director of the Virtual Telescope Project, in a&nbsp;statement&nbsp;before the flyby.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In other words, only the largest asteroids capable of approaching close enough to our planet are flagged as PHAs, which does not mean they are going to hit the Earth, but they nonetheless warrant better monitoring," he added.</p>

<p>Despite its size and proximity, the asteroid will zip by at a distance of approximately 4.1 million miles (6.6 million km) from Earth, 17 times farther away than the moon- a safe vicinity that offers no threat to our planet, either now or in the foreseeable future, as per observations by the European Space Agency (ESA).</p>

<p>However, NASA classified it as a potentially hazardous object, highlighting the asteroid’s potential to cause continental-scale damage if it were to hit Earth, and the least likely prospects of it releasing debris into the atmosphere while passing by that could trigger climate changes.</p>

<p>Due to this capacity, the asteroid, which orbits the Sun once every three years, has earned the moniker of “planet killer”.</p>

<p>Larger than 99% of known near-Earth asteroids, this rock is smaller than the largest space rock (Vredefort asteroid) that hit the Earth's surface in past by 10 times, according to the ESA.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The asteroid in question was estimated to be between 60 metres and almost 800 metres across. Even a smaller asteroid could cause massive damage depending on its impact location.</p>

<p>Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer Emeritus, noted that an asteroid of this size impacting land near a metropolitan area would be a "serious" situation.</p>

Scientists figured that they would be unable to gather more information about this threat for over six months until another asteroid is spotted and they could assess it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We're going to have very large uncertainties in the asteroid's properties, and that leads to very large uncertainties in what the consequences would be if it were to hit the ground," said Daly.</p>

<p>He said there is also uncertainty over "what it would take to stop that asteroid from hitting the ground.”</p>

<p>Asteroid Watch is known to track objects whose orbits bring them at a distance of 4.6 million miles (7.5 million kilometres) from Earth,&nbsp;nearly&nbsp;20 times the distance to&nbsp;the moon.</p>

<p>The asteroid 2024 JR1 will approach Earth at a closer distance, which will be 184,000 miles (296,000 kilometres). The asteroid&nbsp;was discovered&nbsp;just three days back.</p>

<p>While making its closest approach to Earth, the asteroid will be closer than the Moon, which is at a distance of 230,000 miles (370,000 kilometres).</p>

<p>Hence, this asteroid will also come closer than the Moon, however, 2024 JD will pose no danger to Earth.&nbsp;</p>
