Blaming Paul's false accusations against him for the death threats he has received, Fauci cited an incident in December of 2021. Fauci said authorities found an AR-15 rifle and numerous magazines of ammunition in the man's vehicle when they stopped him. The man was travelling to the capital to "kill Dr. Fauci," because "he thinks that maybe I'm (Fauci) killing people."

Several top officials of President Joe Biden's administration were summoned to testify before the Senate regarding the pandemic. This included his chief medical advisor&nbsp;Fauci, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director, Dr Rochelle Walenksy and acting Food and Drug Administration (FDA) head Janet Woodcock.

While many of his fellow lawmakers focused their questions on the lack of adequate testing and the confusing new guidelines concerning how sick people should end their isolation, Paul, who has complained about vaccination mandates and refused to get vaccinated, claimed that Fauci was personally responsible for the deaths.

Despite the fact that the vast majority of those fatalities were unvaccinated, and health officials, including Fauci, have consistently advocated vaccines, Paul blamed Fauci for the thousands of deaths since Biden took office.

"You personally attack me and with absolutely not a shred of evidence of anything you say," Fauci responded.

"All of a sudden that kindles the crazies out there and I have life threats upon my life, harassment of my family and my children with obscene phone calls."

President Joe Biden is trying to accelerate the campaign to vaccinate most American adults as local governments clamor for more doses to prevent the highly contagious illness that has claimed nearly 500,000 lives in the United States.

Fauci, Biden's top medical adviser, told CNN that the approaching death tally was "a terribly historic milestone in the history of this country."

Asked if Americans should expect to still be wearing masks into next year,&nbsp;Fauci&nbsp;said: "I think it is possible that that's the case," adding that it depended on the level of the virus in communities and potential virus variants.

"Obviously, I think we are going to have a significant degree of normality beyond the terrible burden that all of us have been through over the last year,"&nbsp;Fauci&nbsp;said.

In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press",&nbsp;Fauci&nbsp;said it was too soon to pinpoint when the United States might reach herd immunity.

"We want to get that baseline really, really, really low before we start thinking that we're out of the woods."

He told "Fox News Sunday" that whether people in the United States will later need a booster shot depends on the path the South African variant takes.

While the currently available vaccines appear protective against the UK variant that has appeared across the country, they are less protective against the South African one, which so far is not dominant, he said.

"If in fact this becomes more dominant, we may have to get a version of the vaccine that is directed specifically against the South African isolate,"&nbsp;Fauci&nbsp;told Fox, saying studies were already underway.

Herd immunity, or the percentage of a population that acquires resistance to the coronavirus through infection or vaccination, has been widely estimated at roughly 60 to 70 percent for the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

Fauci speaking to a US publication said that the country&nbsp;can&nbsp;function without another lockdown but pointed towards a stepwise opening of the US economy. However, Fauci asserted that "weak link" can potentially make the whole system "unsuccessful".
