At least 80 people have died and thousands have been displaced by the violence, according to a report by the news agency PTI on Tuesday. Govt announces compensation for those killed in violence The central government and the Manipur government announced a compensation of Rs 1 million for those who died during the violence. Speaking to PTI news agency, officials said that a member of the family who died (in the violence) would also be given a job. The officials said that the compensation amount will be equally shared by the Centre and the state. The decision was taken during a meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday night. It was decided to set up dedicated telephone lines which will be used to dispel rumour-mongering which has largely affected the process to calm down the situation and bring peace in the state. Manipur violence: Situation in state got nothing to do with counter-insurgency, says CDS

The Indian government has appointed new Chief of Defence Staff. Lieutenant General (Retired) Anil Chauhan will assume the post that is higher than even the respective armed forces' chiefs. Lt General Chauhan will also function as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Military Affairs.

This is the first time that a retired officer has been appointed as Chief of Defence Staff.

General Bipin Rawat, India's first Chief of Defence Staff, was killed in a helicopter crash on December 8, 2021.

Chief of Defence Staff is considered to be first among equals. The CDS and chiefs of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force are the only four-star officers in the country. The Chief of Defence Staff is the highest ranking officer on active duty in India's military. He is chief military adviser to India's defence minister.

"In a career spanning over nearly 40 years, he (Chauhan)&nbsp;has held several command, staff and instrumental appointments and had extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu Kashmir and North-East India," said defence ministry in a release.

The post of Chief of Defence Staff was lying vacant since December 8 last year after the death of General Bipin Rawat. When General Bipin Rawat was appointed CDS by the Narendra Modi government within six months of coming back to power in 2019, it was hailed as one of the biggest reforms in the higher military structure of the country. 
 
The CDS is also the single point of contact for the government for giving military advice and is the senior-most bureaucrat in the defence ministry which has four major departments. The appointment comes amid efforts by the government to give a big push to indigenisation in the equipment for defence forces.

The General Officer was given a traditional Guard of Honour at Fort William, Kolkata on his assumption as Army Commander, Eastern Command.

Prior to assuming charge as Eastern Army Commander, he was Director-General of Military Operations (DGMO).

He is an alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.

Lieutenant General Chauhan was commissioned into the 11th Gorkha Rifles in 1981. He has served as the United Nations military observer in Angola and also in various capacities at Army headquarters.

He has held several command, staff and instructional appointments during his career and has experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast India.&nbsp;

Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan takes charge as Eastern Army Commander

Nearly a week after the Director General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan agreed to implement the ceasefire pact of 2003 in "letter and spirit", Pakistani rangers resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing along the IB here this morning killing two BSF personnel.

The firing from across the International Border (IB) in the Pragwal area of Akhnoor sector started in the wee hours, resulting in critical injuries to two BSF personnel manning a forward post, a senior officer of the border guarding force told PTI.

He said both the personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector, later succumbed to injuries at a hospital while undergoing treatment.

The firing from across the border in violation of the ceasefire agreement prompted a strong and effective retaliation by the BSF, the officer said.

Cross-border firing was going on when last reports came in, he added.

On May 29, the DGMOs of India and Pakistan agreed to "fully implement" the ceasefire pact of 2003 in "letter and spirit" forthwith to stop border skirmishes in J&K.

The two military commanders reviewed the prevailing situation along the LoC and the IB in J&K during a conversation over the special hotline.

The hotline contact was initiated by the Pakistani DGMO.

Following the conversation between Indian DGMO Lt Gen Anil Chauhan and Pakistan's Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, the two armies issued identical statements saying both sides agreed to implement the 15-year-old ceasefire understanding.

He said both the personnel, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector, later succumbed to injuries at a hospital while undergoing treatment. The firing from across the border in violation of the ceasefire agreement prompted a strong and effective retaliation by the BSF, the officer said. Cross-border firing was going on when last reports came in, he added. On May 29, the DGMOs of India and Pakistan agreed to "fully implement" the ceasefire pact of 2003 in "letter and spirit" forthwith to stop border skirmishes in J&K. The two military commanders reviewed the prevailing situation along the LoC and the IB in J&K during a conversation over the special hotline. The hotline contact was initiated by the Pakistani DGMO. Following the conversation between Indian DGMO Lt Gen Anil Chauhan and Pakistan's Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, the two armies issued identical statements saying both sides agreed to implement the 15-year-old ceasefire understanding. Two BSF personnel killed as Pakistan violates ceasefire in J&K

In a strong message, the Indian Army today asked Pakistan military to stop supporting terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that it will continue to take all "retaliatory measures" foil Pakistan's evil designs.&nbsp;

In a telephonic conversation, Indian Army's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt Gen Anil Chauhan told his Pakistani counterpart that the onus on bringing down tension along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir lies with Pakistan, Army officials said.

The unscheduled interaction over the hotline took place this evening following a request by Pakistan, they said adding the Pakistani DGMO alleged that Indian security forces had resorted to unprovoked firing along the LoC.

"Indian Army DGMO emphatically stated that retaliatory firing by Indian troops has only been carried out in response to unabated support given by Pakistan Army to armed terrorists who infiltrate across the border and target Indian Army posts with heavy calibre weapons," the Army said.

It said Lt Gen Chauhan further impressed conveyed to his Pakistan counterpart that support to terrorism by Pakistan Army was unacceptable and the Indian will continue to take all retaliatory measures.

"The onus of de-escalation along the LoC rests with Pakistan Army provided they stop supporting terrorists and put an end to unprovoked ceasefire violations to abet infiltration," the Army said.

The LoC in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a spurt in ceasefire violations by the Pakistani troops in the last few months and the Indian Army has been retaliating effectively to Pakistani actions.&nbsp;
