India has launched its first indigenous, non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed varieties, Krisna459 and Godari234, in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district. Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan unveiled the new seeds at the Gourmet Popcornica facility in Musunuru on August 24. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Governor S. Abdul Nazeer were also present at the launch.

Tamil Nadu is considering incentives to encourage larger families as its Total Fertility Rate falls below 1.4 and the state’s population ages. Health Minister K G Arunraj said the state could explore a policy similar to Andhra Pradesh.

Fourteen-year-old Kandula Jessie, a Class 10 student from Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district, has been chosen for an all-girls lunar satellite mission. Jessie is among just 20 students selected from India, out of a total of 12,000 applicants across 108 countries, for Mission Shakhtisat.

The state has recorded 12-16 cases and 4 deaths since June 26, though officials note all four patients had serious underlying conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or kidney disease.
