Singh along with nine others was detained under the stringent National Security Act (NSA). He was arrested in April 2023 and is currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail.

The Waris Punjab De chief who styles himself to look like&nbsp;the slain Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was apprehended after almost a month-long manhunt in Moga's Rode village in April last year.

The Khalistan supporter, in March 2023, had managed to escape police in the Jalandhar district by changing appearances and switching vehicles.

The Punjab Police had last year launched a crackdown following the incident where Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some of whom were armed with swords and guns, broke past barricades and stormed into the police station located on the outskirts of Amritsar city.

They engaged in a skirmish with police to free one of Singh's aides Lovepreet Singh Toofan.

He along with his associates were detained under multiple criminal cases, including attempts to murder, attacks on police personnel, spreading disharmony among classes and also creating obstructions in the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.

IGP Sukhchain Singh Gill said that during the entire operation, the "people of Punjab maintained peace and law and order, for which we thank them. We conducted the operation and arrested him at 6:45am".&nbsp;

Videos shared on social media purportedly showed that Singh addressed a gathering at a Gurdwara in Rode village of Moga district before being arrested.&nbsp;

Hindustan Times quoted former Akal Takht Jathedar Jasbir Singh Rode as saying that Amritpal reached Rode village late on Saturday night.&nbsp;

Jasbir said, "I got to know from the police that Amritpal is going to surrender. I reached here sometime before his surrender. After paying obeisance and reciting Path went to gurdwara where he addressed the Sangat (gathering). He explained the reasons for being late in surrender and also thanked people who helped him including providing him stays."&nbsp;

"He went outside of the gurdwara and surrendered before the police. The reports that Amritpal was arrested or forced to surrender are false. Police would have not allowed him to address a gathering, if they knew he was here," he added.&nbsp;

Addressing a press conference, DIG Border Range Narinder Bhargav said, "Punjab Police arrested Warias Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh's main aide Joga Singh from Sirhind. He was arrested in a joint operation by Amritsar police rural and Hoshiyarpur police."

Amritpal Singh remains absconding since March 18. On March 21, the police launched a hunt for Singh who has revived talk of an independent Sikh homeland and stoked fears of a return to violence that killed tens of thousands of people in the 1980s and early 1990s.

The police have accused Singh and his supporters of attempted murder, obstruction of law enforcement and creating disharmony and said he had been on the run when officers tried to block his motorcade and arrest him.
