The Lancashire Police released a statement saying,&nbsp;"We are investigating after a man was killed by a dog in Accrington. Shortly before 9.30 pm yesterday (Tuesday 20 August), we were called by the ambulance service to reports of a dog attacking someone inside a house at Ashley Court in Accrington.” He added, "Our officers attended and, sadly a man in his 50s was found deceased. He can now be named as David Daintree, 53, who was the owner of the dog and who lived at that address. The dog has since been confirmed to be an XL Bully."

He also mentioned that the dog continued to pose significant harm, so they had no choice but to shoot the dog to prevent further cases. He also said that specially trained officers were&nbsp;supporting the family of&nbsp;Daintree.&nbsp;

The police said that, since 1 February 2024, it is illegal to own or possess an XL Bully dog in England and Wales, unless the owner holds a valid Certificate of Exemption.&nbsp;

The East Police officer, Supt Marie Jackson, said that it was a tragic incident that a man had lost his life to a dog attack. He also said that his condolences were with the family of the deceased man. He asked if anyone had any details about the case, to contact the police and help in the investigation. XL Bully dogs will be added to the&nbsp;list of animals banned under the Dangerous Dog Act from the end of this year, as announced by the UK government.&nbsp;

The decision comes after a series of recent attacks involving the American XL Bully breed.&nbsp;

Under the new regulations, which come into effect on December 31, it will be illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, gift, rehome, abandon or allow American XL Bully dogs to stray in England and Wales.

In September, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared the breed a "danger to communities" following a suspected attack on a man in Stonnall, Staffordshire.

<h2>What does the new law say?</h2>

Also from December 31, it is mandatory for XL Bully dogs must be muzzled and on leash&nbsp;in public places.&nbsp;

From February 1,&nbsp;2024,&nbsp;it will also become illegal to own an XL Bully dog unless its owner applies for their animal to be registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs, and complies with a strict set of rules, by the end of January.

UK's Environment Secretary Thérèse Coffey said the government was taking "quick and decisive action to protect the public from tragic dog attacks" as reported by Sky News.&nbsp;

Since 2021, the United Kingdom has reportedly seen nine cases of aggressive individual dogs that have fatally attacked humans. Of the nine cases, three cases involved children.&nbsp;

While it is not advisable for first-time dog owners or households with children to own an American Bully, it is worth noting that the two individuals killed by the breed this year were experienced dog handlers.

<h2>Tragic incidents involving the breed</h2>

In January, a tragic incident occurred in Surrey where a 28-year-old dog walker named Natasha Johnston was fatally attacked while walking eight dogs. The investigation revealed that one of the dogs, an American Bully XL owned by Johnston, was responsible for her death. The dog was subsequently euthanised following a forensic veterinary report.

In a similar incident last month, Jonathan Hogg, a 37-year-old dog caretaker from Greater Manchester, was playing with an American Bully XL when it suddenly attacked him, targeting his throat. Hogg later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Greater Manchester police had to deploy armed officers to control the dog, which was deemed a significant risk to the public, before ultimately euthanizing it.

<h2>Is American Bully an aggressive breed you should be scared of?&nbsp;</h2>

The United Kennel Club, one of the few organisations in the US to recognise the American Bully, describes the breed as "first and foremost, a companion, exhibiting confidence with a zest and exuberance for life," and calls its nature "gentle and friendly".
