Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday welcomed Pakistan's decision to remove the requirement of a separate permit system to allow pilgrims to travel through the historic <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/kartarpur-corridor-talks-round-two-ends-pakistan-not-open-to-5000-pilgrims-daily-235729">Kartarpur corridor</a> but requested for the waiver of passport to facilitate devotees from the rural areas of the state to visit the holy place.

Chief Minister Singh, in a statement, said Pakistan has now agreed to 5,000 devotees a day as against its original proposal of 500 but the number needed to be further raised.

The Chief Minister, however, hailed Pakistan's decision to allow Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholders, as urged by him.

The historic corridor would not serve its full potential unless Pakistan agreed to become even more flexible with regard to pilgrims visit the Sri Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, an official quoted him as saying.

He urged the Central government to engage even more closely with Pakistan to secure their agreement on other demands he has been putting forth.

The Chief Minister also reiterated his demand for a special package from the Centre to make the celebrations truly historic and befitting the sacred occasion.

The Chief Minister has hoped the government would press Pakistan to accept other key demands being raised by him over the past several months.

These included further increase in the daily limit of pilgrims allowed passage by Islamabad to enable 'khulle darshan' to mark the historic occasion of the 550th birth anniversary celebration of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the statement said.

Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu has been&nbsp;stripped off his urban development department.

Amarinder Singh previously said that he was unhappy with&nbsp;Sidhu's performance in urban areas in the Lok Sabha polls.

Sidhu was the Minister of Local Government, Tourism, Cultural Affairs, and Museums of the State of Punjab. After the reshuffle, he has now been given&nbsp;the Department of Power, New and Renewable Energy sources.

Earlier today Navjot Singh Sidhu skipped the first cabinet meeting after the elections and asserted he could not be "taken for granted".

"I cannot be taken for granted. I have been a performer throughout in 40 years of my life be it international cricket, or world-class commentary with Geoffrey Boycott, TV shows or motivational talks," Sidhu told reporters.

"My department is being singled out publicly. I always regard him as my elder I always listen to him. But it hurts and now where is the collective responsibility? He (Amarinder) could have called me and said anything he wanted to say," Sidhu added.

In the recently held general election, Congress won eight out of the 13 seats in Punjab.

Asked if the party high command would agree to change Sidhu's portfolio, Singh said he had raised the issue with them some months ago and it was agreed that any decision in the matter would be taken after the Lok Sabha elections.

The chief minister said he was confident that not just party president Rahul Gandhi but even Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was believed to have a soft corner for Sidhu, would agree in the interest of the state and for strengthening the party.

"My wife has that much strength and moral authority that she will never lie. This is my answer," Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is Tourism and Culture minister, said when asked about his wife's allegations.

However, denying the charge, the chief minister said in Patiala that she had been offered Congress ticket from Amritsar or Bathinda seat, but she refused it.

Singh also said he had no role in denying ticket to Kaur from Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, saying ticket allocation was done by the Congress high command in Delhi and they chose Pawan Kumar Bansal.

On May 14, Congress leader and former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu had alleged that it was Amarinder Singh and party's Punjab affairs in-charge Kumari who ensured that she does not get the party ticket from the Amritsar parliamentary constituency.

Kaur, who had also been seeking ticket from the Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat, had alleged that the chief minister had claimed that he alone was capable to lead the Congress to victory on 13 parliamentary seats in the state.

"Capt Sahab and Asha Kumari think that Madam Sidhu (Navjot Kaur) does not deserve an MP ticket. My ticket from Amritsar was denied on grounds that I could not win because of a train accident in Amritsar on Dussehra (in October last year which left 60 people dead). Madam Sidhu cannot win, this was said by Capt and Asha Kumari," she had told reporters in Amritsar.

Further hitting out at Amarinder Singh and Kumari, she had also said they think that the Sidhu couple is not capable to "do some benefit for Punjab".

Sidhu slammed Badals over the issue of farm debt waiver, claiming that the previous SAD-BJP government had failed in settling a single rupee of farmers' loan despite bringing an act -- the Punjab Settlement of Agricultural Indebtedness Act, 2016, -- for it.

"Positions lying vacant in most of debt settlement forums at district level were not filled. Nothing had happened during the previous regime. It showed their intent and lack of interest in protecting farmers," he said.

"They spent Rs 1.50 crore on advertisement of the settlement of debt. But not even a single rupee was settled," he claimed.&nbsp;

Amarinder refutes Sidhu's wife's charge but minister says 'my wife will never lie' 

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Sunday trashed AAP's allegations that opposition MLAs were offered money and plum posts to switch over to the Congress, saying the Arvind Kejriwal-led party was frustrated over its failure in garnering support in the state and indulging in gimmickry.

He asked why would the Congress buy opposition MLAs when it already has a majority in the state assembly.

"It's a case of sheer frustration over AAP's complete failure to mop up support and keep the party intact in Punjab," he said.

"AAP has completely lost its narrative in Punjab and was reduced to indulging in all kinds of gimmickry and fabrications in a desperate bid to retain some semblance of being a serious party," he added.

The chief minister said hurling false accusations at the Congress was not going to help the AAP regain lost ground.

Day after the first round of India-Pakistan talks to decide on the modalities of Kartarpur corridor, Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday asked Pakistan to be ''more responsive'' to India's proposal and described Islamabad's counter-proposals ''totally inadequate''.&nbsp;

"Pakistan's response to India's demands on Kartarpur Corridor is totally inadequate. The Corridor won't serve its true purpose with such limitations. Sikhs have been deprived of Kartarpur Gurdwara darshan for 70 years, need to allow more people every day, including from overseas," the Congress leader from Punjab tweeted.

He also called on Islamabad to provide "Khule Darshan".&nbsp;

While New Delhi wanted&nbsp;Pilgrims'&nbsp;visit to be allowed all seven days and have the right to visit the gurudwara on the foot which is an essential element of any pilgrimage, Islamabad has not agreed to this saying Indian citizens can visit only on specially designated days.

He said, "Pilgrims should be allowed to go through KartarpurCorridor for ‘Khule Darshan’ at the historic Gurdwara all 7 days a week. Special permits should be good for identity, the visa requirement needs to be waived off. Pakistan has to be more responsive on this issue."

Pakistan is also not keen on Indian proposal that the corridor should be open to the Indian diaspora such as Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card holders.&nbsp;

Government sources say that Pakistan has lived up to its "old reputation of making false promises" by making "tall claims and delivering nothing" and has been doing "double-speak" on the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor too.

Sources told WION, "there is a sea of difference between what Pakistan, including PM Imran Khan had announced and its actual offer during the talks''.

The talks turned out to be farcical and mere tokenism, the sources added.

During the talks, India had strongly raised the encroachment of land belonging to the Gurudwara Kartarpur Sahib and asked it to be returned.&nbsp;

The land was donated to the Gurdwara by Punjab's famous 19th-century ruler Maharaja Ranjeet Singh. Part of the land has also been taken over by the Pakistani government in the name of developing the Corridor.&nbsp;

The next round of talks will take place at Wagah, Pakistan on April 2, 2019.

The Punjab Chief Minister, in response, also urged the Akali leader to give up such theatrics if he wanted his party to remain a serious contender in the political arena. 
 
Lashing out at the SAD president for his continued efforts to exploit the sentiments of farmers, to whom, he claimed, the former regime failed to deliver even an iota of benefits, Amarinder said the former deputy chief minister was trying to mislead the farming community in a desperate bid to wean it away from the Congress. 
 
He pointed out that Congress president Rahul Gandhi had already promised waiver of loans for the beleaguered farmers across the country if the party was elected to power in the forthcoming elections. "It was evident that the SAD-BJP combine was scared out of their wits by the Congress leadership's promise and their track record of delivering on their poll promises in all the states in which the party had been elected to power," he claimed. 
 
The Punjab Chief Minister ridiculed Sukhbir's blatant attempts to divert public attention from the erstwhile Akali-BJP regime's failure on all counts. "For 10 years, the Badals did not take cognisance of the plight of the farmers and were now shedding crocodile tears for them, he added. Having gone through extreme pain and suffering under the SAD-BJP government for a decade, neither the farmers nor any other section of Punjab's populace was now willing to be deceived by the SAD leadership," he said. 
 
Countering Badal's baseless allegation with facts and figures, Amarinder pointed out that his government had delivered on its promise of loan waiver despite the severe financial constraints and fiscal mess it had inherited from the Badal regime. "Not just the farmers of Punjab but those of the entire nation had appreciated his government's initiative, which had been replicated now by the newly installed Congress regime in three other states," he added. 
 
The Chief Minister pointed out that his government had so far disbursed Rs. 3595.04 crore to 428246 farmers against their debts, with the process for loan waiver to 159632 small farmers also initiated. Of this, Rs. 1815.78 crore had been disbursed to 317965 marginal farmers against loans taken from cooperative banks and Rs. 1779.26 crore to 110281 marginal farmers towards loans from commercial banks. 
 
"These are hard facts that no amount of fabrications by Sukhbir or anyone else can negate," said Amarinder, challenging the SAD president to cite even one example of any benefit provided by their government to the farmers. 
 
"Sukhbir's brazen attempts to lie his way out of the current mess in which his party and leadership are caught at present were nothing more than a sign of frustration and desperation. With SAD completely marginalised in Punjab, and their ally, the BJP, also clearly losing political ground, the Akali chief was looking for a way out of the political alienation which the coalition was facing ahead of the Lok Sabha elections," Amarinder claimed.

The chief minister made the remarks after a section of media reported that US-based Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a separatist outfit, had allegedly sought support from the Pakistan government for 'Referendum 2020', a campaign to "separate Punjab from India".

Attacking SFJ's legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief minister said, "The cat is now well and truly out of the bag, and the truth of the deep-rooted connection between the SJF and the Pakistani Army is out in the open."&nbsp;

Amarinder Singh has also taken strong exception to SFJ's reported plans to hold a 'Kartarpur Sahib Convention 2019', coinciding with the auspicious occasion of the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.

The whole affair is a "bigger conspiracy" by the Pakistan Army, which is persistently trying to revive militancy in Punjab, the CM said, reiterating his stand on the issue.&nbsp;

Amarinder Singh also said that Punjab and the Indian Army were well prepared to counter any such plans of the neighbouring country. 
"Punjab is today much better equipped than it was in the 80s and 90s when Pak-backed terrorism had swept the state," he said, warning Islamabad against extending any further support to SFJ or other such outfits that are bent on disturbing the state's hard-earned peace.

The Pakistan Army would do well to remember the ignominious defeats it had suffered at the hands of the Indian Army on every occasion it had tried to take on the might of the latter, right from the 1965 and 1971 wars to the more recent Kargil battle, warned Amarinder Singh.

Asserting that he was all in favour of the Kartarpur Corridor to fulfil the long-pending aspirations of the Sikh community in India, the chief minister said it was the "misuse" of the initiative that he was opposed to.&nbsp;

'If Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was truly in favour of opening the doors for long-lasting peace with India through this corridor, he should not only unequivocally condemn the SFJ statement but should also ensure that Pakistan soil is not used by the anti-India outfit to further its campaign,' he said, urging the Pak leader to put a stop to the plan of 'Kartarpur Sahib Convention 2019'.

'Let the two countries build a corridor of peace in the true sense of the word, without the auspicious occasion of the 550th 'Prakash Purb' being allowed by Islamabad to be abused by anti-Indian forces,' the CM said.

The chief minister said he had been naming Kumar as well as a few other former Congress leaders, including Dharam Das Shastri, H K L Bhagat and Arjun Das, for the past 34 years, based on information personally received from victims in refugee camps in Delhi during the riots.

Kumar is the only surviving former Congress leaders implicated in the riots, as the others have since passed away.

Kumar's name repeatedly cropped up in his interactions with the victims in the refugee camps, said 76-year-old Singh, who last month also welcomed the first death sentence awarded in the 1984 riots case.&nbsp;

Though the years, Singh has been calling for the strictest of punishments for the handful of individual Congress leaders who had been involved in instigating the riots.

The leaders, including Kumar, did not have any official party sanction and deserved to be punished for their horrendous crime, he has maintained.&nbsp;

The chief minister reiterated his stand that neither the Congress party nor the Gandhi family had any role to play in the rioting. He lashed out at the Badals for continuing to drag their names into the case at the behest of their "political masters"&nbsp;the Bharatiya Janata Party, who he said were clearly shaken by the clear mandate given by the people to Rahul Gandhi's leadership in the recent Assembly elections in three states.

There was no Congress conspiracy behind the violence and the names of the Gandhis did not come up even once during his visits to the refugee camps, Singh said, adding that "vested political interests" were trying to draw the Gandhis into the controversy and the conspiracy for their personal motivations.

The case against Kumar relates to killing of five Sikhs in Raj Nagar part-I area in Palam Colony in South West Delhi on November 1-2, 1984 and burning down of a Gurudwara in Raj Nagar part II.&nbsp;

T A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel convicted Kumar for criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity and acts against communal harmony.&nbsp;

The high court said Kumar's life imprisonment will be for the remainder of his life and asked him to surrender by December 31.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said Monday his minister Navjot Singh Sidhu's decision to visit Pakistan for the ground-breaking ceremony of Kartarpur corridor was "his way of thinking" but he could not think of doing that when Indian soldiers and civilians were being killed by them.

Sidhu, a cabinet minister in Punjab, on Sunday accepted Pakistan's invitation to attend the ceremony on Wednesday, while Singh declined the invite, citing continuous terrorist attacks in his state.

As a man who has served the Indian Army, Singh said, he could not tolerate the killing of innocent Indians by Pakistani security forces and hence cannot visit the neighbouring country.

On Sidhu's decision to go to Pakistan for the ground-breaking ceremony there, Singh told reporters after the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Dera Baba Nanak-Kartarpur Sahib Corridor in Gurdaspur, that it was "his way of thinking".

On the central government's decision to send its ministers to Pakistan for the ceremony, the Punjab chief minister said it was for them to do what they deem fit but, he added, they should have been more sensitive to the feelings of Indian soldiers and citizens.

"The Centre cannot close its eyes to what is happening in India as a result of Pakistan's policy and support to terrorist groups," Singh said.

He said the world knows Pakistan supports terrorist activities in India, and cited as examples the attacks in Pathankot (2016), Mumbai (2008), Dina Nagar in Gurdaspur (2015) and the trouble in Jammu &amp; Kashmir.

Singh said he would not travel to Pakistan until it stops unleashing the cycle of violence in India.

"If you think (Pakistan Prime Minister) Imran Khan can stop it, that won't happen. Governments work under the army in Pakistan. Army is a power in itself. It is for Pakistan Army chief Gen Bajwa to understand that such things should not happen (again)... Armies don't fight innocent women and children, armies don't throw grenades on religious congregation, armies are there to defend the country," he said.

In August, Sidhu's visit to Pakistan for Khan's swearing-in had come under fire from opposition parties for his hug to Pakistan Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa. Sidhu had claimed that Gen Bajwa had told him about "making efforts to open the Kartarpur corridor".

Kartarpur is in Shakargarh in Narowal district of Pakistan's Punjab province. Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, had spent over 18 years of his life here.

The Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara is about three-four km from the border in Pakistan.&nbsp;

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh Friday launched year-long celebrations of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, and called upon people to set aside their religious and political differences to join his government in making it memorable.

Addressing a large gathering in Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district, where Nanak Dev spent over 14 years of his early life, Singh exhorted the people to reconnect with his teachings, principles and ideals.

Greeting people on the occasion of 'Gurpurab', he invited people from across the world to participate in the celebrations.

As part of the celebrations, Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore inaugurated an exhibition, 'From Rabab to Nagara', curated by historian Mohinder Singh, the director of Delhi-based National Institute of Punjab Studies.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and many senior Congress leaders, including Asha Kumari and Sunil Jakhar, were present on the occasion.

Manmohan Singh, Badnore and the chief minister laid the foundation stones of 26 development projects worth Rs 150 crore on the occasion.

The projects included upgrade of infrastructure in the historic towns of Sultanpur Lodhi, Dera Baba Nanak and Batala.

The chief minister also announced projects and welfare schemes to the tune of Rs 3,312 crore to help pilgrims and to commemorate the historic occasion.

Guru Nanak Dev was born in 1469. His 549th birth anniversary falls on Friday.

Noting that considerations of caste, creed and inequality are again rampant in the society, he said, "We need to rise above these on the path shown by Guru Sahib. If Punjab has to regain its number one position in the country, we need to maintain 'bhai-chara' (brotherhood) and 'saanjh' (amity) and not get divided on different lines."

"The Punjab government will observe the event as a non-political and bi-partisan affair," the chief minister said.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union government for acceding to various requests of the state government with regard to the celebrations.

He hailed the Centre's decision to develop the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor from Punjab's Gurdaspur district to the International Border to facilitate Indian pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur in Pakistan.

He said a long-pending demand of Punjab was on the verge of fulfilment and on November 26, he would join the President to lay the foundation stone of the corridor.

He also thanked the Government of Pakistan for reciprocating on the issue and said his government would also contribute, as may be required, to ensure timely completion of the project.

Addressing the gathering, former prime minister Manmohan Singh expressed gratitude to Amarinder Singh and his government for giving him the opportunity to be part of this special moment.

He expressed hope that all would rise above petty considerations of communalism and hatred to celebrate the event in a befitting manner. 
The former prime minister exhorted the people to participate in the year-long celebrations with full enthusiasm and gaiety, regardless of caste, colour, creed and religion.

Governor Badnore said it was a matter of pride for him to be part of the auspicious occasion. He called for universal brotherhood as the key message of the commemorative events.

Badnore said the Railway Ministry would run special trains on the religious circuit relating to the life of Guru Nanak Dev for the convenience of the pilgrims.

Former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev, who was also present, presented a book, 'We the Sikhs around the world', relating to 100 Gurdwaras across the globe, to Manmohan Singh, Badnore and Amarinder Singh.

Punjab CM Confirms Pakistan's link to Amritsar attack

Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said that the grenade used in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/3-dead-10-injured-in-grenade-attack-at-amritsars-rajasansi-village-178012">attack on a religious congregation</a> on the city outskirts of Amritsar was made under license by Pakistan ordinance factory and added that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) masterminded the attack.&nbsp;

The grenade used in the attack is the same used against the Indian forces in Kashmir, he said and added Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence is quite active in fomenting trouble in Punjab, Singh said.

Three persons were killed and at least 10 injured in the attack.&nbsp;

The CM said that 26-year-old Bikramjit Singh has been arrested in connection with the attack and another accused will be captured soon.&nbsp;

''I'm happy to announce that police nabbed one of the two persons involved. The other man will also be arrested soon. His name is Avtar Singh,'' he said.&nbsp;

Punjab: CM Amarinder Singh gets Environment portfolio 

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh suspected Sunday Pakistan's ISI-backed Khalistani or Kashmiri militants' role in the Amritsar terror attack that killed three persons and injured twenty others, and vowed that he would not let the "forces of terror" destroy the state's "hard-earned peace".

The possibility of involvement of ISI-backed Khalistani or Kashmiri terror groups could not be ruled out (in the Amritsar terror attack)," said Amarinder Singh in an official statement, adding the forensic teams have been rushed to the spot and "all angles were being investigated".

The chief minister said his government was on the top of things" and would "get to the bottom of the incident" soon and ensure that the culprits are nabbed and brought to book.

Nobody will be allowed to get away with trying to disturb the peace and harmony of the state, he said.

Three persons were killed and at least twenty others were injured when two motorcycle-borne miscreants hurled a grenade at a religious congregation of over 200 devotees inside a Nirankari Bhawan at Adliwal village near Amritsar's Rajasansi area Sunday, the police said earlier.

In his statement, the chief minister said the preliminary investigations have revealed that two men - one of them with a flowing beard and both with their faces covered - forced their entry into the hall, brandishing a pistol.

They detained the sewadar, lobbed the grenade into the prayer room and fled on a motorcycle on which they had come, he added.

A small crater was formed by the impact of the explosion and was being examined by the forensic team, Amarinder Singh said, adding that the safety valve of the grenade too has been found and was being examined.

Soon after the attack, the chief minister reviewed the law and order situation in the state and asked the state home secretary, Punjab police chief and director generals, law &amp; order and intelligence, to rush to Rajasansi in Amritsar to supervise the ongoing probe into the grenade attack, an official spokesman said here.

Forensic teams too have been rushed to the spot and all angles were being investigated, said the chief minister.

Strongly condemning the grenade attack after reviewing law and order in the state, Amarinder Singh vowed that he will not let the "forces of terror" destroy the hard-earned peace in the state.

While making an appeal to the people "not to panic and remain calm," the chief minister tweeted, "We will not let the forces of terror destroy our hard-earned peace."

"I appeal to the people of Punjab to maintain peace in the wake of Amritsar bomb blast. I urge them not to panic and remain calm," he added.

Amarinder Singh's tweet followed soon after Punjab police chief Suresh Arora told PTI that the incident "appears to have a terror angle... we will take it as a terrorist act."

In his statement, the chief minister added that police teams have been rushed to raid suspected hideouts of the assailants and multiple teams are investigating various angles to crack the case.

The chief minister also directed police to immediately beef up the security at all sensitive places, including all Nirankari Bhawan, in the wake of the grenade attack - the first such indiscriminate act against innocent people in recent past.

Punjab had been severely hit by pro-Khalistan militancy in the 1980s and early 1990s, but it faced few terror attacks in recent years, barring the one in Pathankot over two years back.

Though the state had been hit by a series of targeted attacks since 2015/2016, this was the first attempt, in a long time, aimed at disturbing the peace in the state through indiscriminate killings, said the chief minister.

This strengthened the belief that Pakistan was continuing with its nefarious activities to disturb peace in the state, he added.

Amarinder Singh said 15 terror modules were busted in the past 18 months, with indications of Kashmiri terror links too in some instances as evidenced in the arrest of Kashmiri students from Jalandhar and in a case of grenade blast at Maqsudan police station.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh earlier today announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh for information leading to the arrest of suspects.

Information regarding the suspects can be provided at police helpline (181) and the identity of the informers will be kept secret, said media adviser to the Punjab Chief Minister.

He met officials of Israel’s Tyros International Group Ltd to discuss investments opportunities in Punjab’s infrastructure sector.

Singh and his accompanying high-level delegation on Tuesday will be participating in a seminar “Investment Opportunities in Punjab”.The seminar aims to attract Israeli investors to Punjab. The chief minister then went to visit facilities of NaanDan Jain Irrigation Ltd, accompanied by officials of the state, to witness the latest technology deployed in precision farming and horticulture.

The company is among the leading global producers and providers of irrigation solutions, and its expertise drives higher crop yields, minimising risks and saving precious non-renewable resources . “Really interesting to see NaanDanJain Irrigation use precision agriculture to deliver increased productivity in Israel.

Singh said identifying water conservation techniques is a priority area for his state.

Singh and the delegation were give a tour of the waste water treatment and effluent reuse plant. “What an innovation! Punjab can use Israeli tech to solve issues of farmers, water conservation, says CM Amarinder Singh

Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday ordered the Amritsar district collector to immediately release of Rs 3 crore for payment of ex-gratia to the families of those died in the train accident.&nbsp;

Earlier, the CM visited the victims of Amritsar train accident at several hospitals. He visited Amandeep Hospital, Civil Hospital and Guru Nanak Dev Government Hospital in Amritsar where the victims are being treated. &nbsp;

He also ordered a magisterial inquiry in the incident.

''We are ordering a magisterial inquiry into the incident under the police commissioner who will submit a report in 4 weeks,'' he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.&nbsp;

The chief minister said that 59 people died while 57 injured.&nbsp;

Amritsar train accident: Punjab CM orders release of Rs 3 crore for payment of ex-gratia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday assured Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh of all support from the Centre in tackling the flood situation arising in the state due to incessant rains.

Prime Minister spoke with Singh on phone and enquired about the flood situation in the state, and assured him of all possible help in mitigating the situation arising out of floods and rains, according to an official spokesperson.

Briefing the Prime Minister, the Punjab Chief Minister said that he had visited the affected districts of Kapurthala and Tarn Taran and there had been significant damage to crops in areas around the Beas River.

Singh further stated that the process of the special girdawari, ordered by him to assess the losses, will commence as soon as the waters recede.

He thanked Prime Minister Modi for his assurance and said that he would apprise him of the situation once the girdawai process is completed.

Earlier today, during his visit to Sultanpur Lodhi, the Chief Minister had stated that he would be approaching the Centre for funds for construction of spurs in the River Beas to prevent floods in the future.

He had said that these spurs were necessary for protecting the river banks by keeping the flow of water away.

The chief minister had also stated that he would be meeting Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to seek replacement of the existing pontoon bridges in the district with permanent ones.

Three days of heavy downpour in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir have swelled up the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers in Punjab.

Briefing the Prime Minister, the Punjab Chief Minister said that he had visited the affected districts of Kapurthala and Tarn Taran and there had been significant damage to crops in areas around the Beas River. Singh further stated that the process of the special girdawari, ordered by him to assess the losses, will commence as soon as the waters recede. He thanked Prime Minister Modi for his assurance and said that he would apprise him of the situation once the girdawai process is completed. Earlier today, during his visit to Sultanpur Lodhi, the Chief Minister had stated that he would be approaching the Centre for funds for construction of spurs in the River Beas to prevent floods in the future. He had said that these spurs were necessary for protecting the river banks by keeping the flow of water away. The chief minister had also stated that he would be meeting Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to seek replacement of the existing pontoon bridges in the district with permanent ones. Three days of heavy downpour in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir have swelled up the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers in Punjab. Also, the water levels further escalated in Jalandhar after 56,000 cusecs of water were released from Ropar in Sutlej.

"Though the government could not have taken any other stand in the apex court, other than what it had been taken in the trial and high court earlier, Sidhu deserved the court's consideration," Singh said, adding "Had we done so, we would have been accused of lying either now or earlier.

The state government had in the top court yesterday favoured the Punjab and Haryana High Court verdict convicting and awarding a three-year jail term to Sidhu in the 1988 case.

Gurnam Singh, a Patiala resident, had died after Sidhu hit him with his fist.

Amarinder Singh, however, hoped the judge would take into account Sidhu's "contribution to the society and the country" in his final verdict.

According to an official release quoting his interview on YouTube Live, the chief minister dismissed accusations that he did not like Sidhu.

In September 1999, a trial court had acquitted Sidhu of the murder charge. However, in 2006, the high court reversed the verdict and held him and co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The high court sentenced them to three-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on the convicts.&nbsp

The Punjab Cabinet on Saturday gave its assent to table The Punjab Social Security Bill, 2018 in the ongoing Budget session of the assembly.

A spokesperson in the Chief Minister&#39;s Office said the Bill relates to social services in the form of pension to senior citizens, old-aged, widows, destitute women, physically challenged persons, health and accident insurance, scholarship for education of children belonging to deprived sections, and other such financial assistance to the poor and needy as may be considered necessary.

The Social Security Fund would be administered by a trust headed by the chief minister and comprising the finance minister, welfare minister and social security minister, besides various experts.
