<h2>Financial crimes</h2>

The 55-year-old former attorney was sentenced in a federal court in South Carolina after pleading guilty to 22 counts of financial crimes.

While Federal agents had recommended a sentence of 17 1/2 to just under 22 years for his crimes, presiding US District Judge Richard Gergel imposed a harsher punishment.

Gergel said that he stole from "the most needy, vulnerable people," including a quadriplegic client, an injured state trooper, and a trust fund for children whose parents were killed in a wreck.

Murdaugh stole from people who "placed all their problems and all their hopes" on him, said the judge.

Attorney Justin Bamberg, who represented several of Murdaugh's victims,&nbsp;said, "There is a staggering human toll to every cent."

<h2>What did he do with the money?</h2>

Murtagh took settlement money and inflated fees or expenses for more than two dozen of his clients, reports news agency AP.

To do this, he used a "maze" of fake accounts, and juggled checks and money movements that hid the thefts for nearly 20 years. &nbsp;

Blaming nearly two decades of addiction to opioids for the financial fraud, he said he felt "guilt, sorrow, shame, embarrassment, humiliation."

"There's not enough time and I don't possess a sufficient vocabulary to adequately portray to you in words the magnitude of how I feel about the things I did," said Murdaugh.

However, Gergel dismissed Murtagh's explanation and said: "No truly impaired person could pull off these complex transactions."

Prosecutors also argued that Murdaugh's claims about his drug addiction didn't add up. They pointed out that the amount of money he stole increased rapidly in the years before his arrest, despite him claiming to be taking the same amount of pills as when his addiction started.

Convicted murderer Alex&nbsp;Murdaugh on Thursday (September 21) pleaded guilty to nearly two dozen fraud and money laundering charges&nbsp;in a federal court in Charleston, making it the first time he had accepted responsibility for his crimes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Murdaugh pleaded guilty to 22 charges in total, which include 14 counts of money laundering,&nbsp;five counts of wire fraud,&nbsp;one count of bank fraud,&nbsp;one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud; and&nbsp;one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.&nbsp;

While the majority of the charges carry a maximum federal sentence of 20 years, some carry a maximum sentence of 30 years, the court filings showed.&nbsp;

According to media reports, Murdaugh cried in the courtroom as he told the judge he was pleading guilty of his own free will.&nbsp;Murdaugh added he was doing so not only because he was guilty of the said crime but to also show his son Buster, that he was taking responsibility for his actions.&nbsp;

"I want to take responsibility. I want my son to see me take responsibility. It's my hope that by taking responsibility that the people I've hurt can begin to heal," said Murdaugh, clad in the&nbsp;orange South Carolina prison jumpsuit.

<h2>What does the deal say?</h2>

According to the plea agreement signed between Murdaugh and federal prosecutors, if the former cooperates and complies with the conditions set forth, the government attorneys will recommend to the court that any federal sentence he receives for these charges&nbsp;“be served concurrent to any state sentence served for the same conduct".&nbsp;

Currently, Murdaugh is serving a prison sentence without parole in a South Carolina jail for gunning down his wife and son at the family estate on&nbsp;June 7, 2021. The 55-year-old has denied any&nbsp;role in the killings and maintained his innocence before being convicted on two counts of murder earlier this year.&nbsp;

In their motion filed with the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the defence team accused Colleton County clerk of court, Rebecca Hill, of influencing jurors by questioning their opinions regarding Murdaugh's guilt or innocence.

They also claim that Hill fabricated a story about a Facebook post to disqualify a juror who might not have voted guilty.

<h2>Jury verdict&nbsp;</h2>

During the trial, the jury deliberated for less than three hours before convicting Murdaugh of fatally shooting his wife, Maggie, and their youngest son, Paul, on their family estate in June 2021. The defence argued that Hill's actions were driven by a desire to secure a book deal and media appearances, which she ultimately pursued with the publication of "Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders" in July.

According to the US Attorney's Office in South Carolina, the 54-year-old Murdaugh apparently conspired with another personal injury lawyer — Cory Fleming — to siphon settlement funds in the death of the housekeeper Gloria Satterfield.&nbsp;

The longtime housekeeper died in 2018 following what had been described as a "trip and fall accident" at the family home.&nbsp;

The prosecutors said that Murdaugh directed Fleming to draw checks totalling nearly $3.5 million to a bank account that he utilised for his profit, while Satterfield's estate received none of the settlement cash.

Fleming, 54, is set to plead guilty on Thursday on a charge of conspiracy to conduct wire fraud in connection with the Satterfield case, according to federal authorities.&nbsp;

As quoted by NBC News, US Attorney Adair Boroughs said in a statement: "Trust in our legal system begins with trust in its lawyers."&nbsp;

The statement added: "South Carolinians turn to lawyers when they are at their most vulnerable, and in our state, those who abuse the public's trust and enrich themselves by fraud, theft, and self-dealing will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."&nbsp;

Earlier this month, Murdaugh's lawyers revealed part of a lawsuit that accused him of life insurance fraud in Satterfield's death.&nbsp;

The suit stated that he "invented the critical facts" surrounding her original trip and fall accident in order to earn millions of dollars in the settlement.&nbsp;

Nautilus Insurance Co. had filed a suit alleging it was defrauded and the attorney for Satterfield's children said that Murdaugh never told the family about the settlement money.&nbsp;
