Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been escalating, with new reports suggesting that Pakistan’s defense circles are allegedly planning to seize control of the Wakhan Corridor, a narrow strip of Afghan territory often referred to as the country's "chicken neck." Defense analyst Qamar Cheema has highlighted this claim, and various social media posts suggest that actions may already be underway to take over the strategically significant corridor.

Report Claims Pakistan Planning To Annex Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor

Pakistan and Afghanistan have reportedly agreed to a ceasefire after recent border clashes. This comes after Pakistan reportedly responded with retaliatory fire to firing by Taliban soldiers late on Saturday night. Watch in for more details!

Report: Pakistan, Afghanistan Agree To Truce After Deadly Border Skirmish

Afghanistan rulers Taliban on Saturday (Dec 28) issued a new order effectively stonewalling women from the public eye. The new order bans the construction of windows in residential buildings that overlook areas used by Afghan women, including the kitchen and communal wells.
The country's orthodox rulers claim that seeing women in kitchens or such areas can "lead to obscene acts".

What the Taliban order says

In a statement released late on Saturday, the Taliban government instructed citizens to ensure that new buildings do not have windows through which it is possible to see "the courtyard, kitchen, neighbour's well and other places usually used by women". Additionally, buildings that already have such windows would be encouraged to seal them.
On social media platform X, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said, "Seeing women working in kitchens, in courtyards or collecting water from wells can lead to obscene acts."
To ensure compliance, the nation's municipal authorities and other relevant authorities have been tasked with monitoring construction sites. They will ensure that people can't look into their neighbour's house.

According to news agency AFP, the decree also specified that in instances where such windows already exist, building owners would be asked to put up a wall or seal the window to obstruct the view "to avoid nuisances caused to neighbours".

Protecting women or hiding women?

In the almost 3.5 years since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, the Afghan rulers have issued a number of diktats progressively erasing women from public life in Afghanistan.
The Taliban authorities have forced women to wear a hijab or "veil" outside their homes. It has also banned post-primary education for girls and women, restricted their employment and even blocked their access to public spaces, including parks.

Amid the tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Islamabad on Tuesday (Dec 24) launched overnight airstrikes, targeting suspected Taliban hideouts.
The strike successfully dismantled a training facility and killed some insurgents, said Pakistan security officials, as per a PTI report.
At least six explosions have been reported at the Pakistan Taliban camp, sources told WION's Pakistan bureau chief Anas Mallick.
Four big TTP camps have been destroyed, sources said, adding Taliban commanders Sher Zaman alias Mukhlis Yar, Akhtar Muhammad alias Khalil, Azhar alias Hamza, Shoaib Cheema were killed. The office of Umar Media has also been destroyed.
The total death toll is yet to be officially confirmed, but sources said it stands somewhere between 25 and 30.

What areas were targeted?

Citing anonymous security sources, the PTI news agency reported that Taliban bases near the border, in Afghanistan's Barmal district of Paktika Province, were targeted. However, it is not clear if the jets went deep inside Afghanistan or how exactly they were launched.

The new strikes came just hours after Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan's special representative for Afghanistan, travelled to Kabul. There, he met with Sirajuddin Haqqani, Afghanistan's acting interior minister and "held wide-ranging discussions."

Two bus accidents involving a fuel tanker and a truck on a highway in central Afghanistan killed at least 52 people and injured 68, a provincial official said Thursday (Dec 19).
The accidents happened in Ghazni province on the same highway between the capital Kabul and southern Kandahar city late Wednesday, provincial head of information and culture Hamidullah Nisar said on X, without specifying how many people were killed and injured in each accident.
"There is a possibility the numbers could rise," Nisar told reporters outside a hospital in Ghazni city where victims had been sent.
He noted that some of the injured were in a "critical condition" and had been sent to Kabul for treatment. "Among the injured and dead were children, women, and elderly people," he added.
One bus collided with a fuel tanker near Shahbaz village in central Ghazni, while the other hit a truck in the eastern district of Andar, Nisar said.

Chief government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid posted on X that the authorities had "great regret" over the accidents and that an investigation would be launched.
Teams worked to clear debris at the sites into the morning, with hunks of metal and broken glass strewn across the area in Andar along with the clothes and meals of bus passengers, an AFP journalist saw.
One of the injured in the accident in Shahbaz, Khadim, said he was jolted awake by the noise of the accident but then lost consciousness.
When he came to and pulled himself from the wreck, he "saw there were a lot of people under the vehicle and on the ground around us, there was crying and blood everywhere".
The two destroyed buses were transported to a lot in Ghazni city, their crushed and twisted frames and seats splattered with blood.
The vehicles "were badly damaged" and the bus had been "bashed around" said Rahim, who was at the site in Shahbaz not long after the accident.

"We were gathering the stuff from the site, and there were human legs, I buried them there, it was a very intense accident," he told AFP.
Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, due in part to poor roads after decades of conflict, dangerous driving on highways, and a lack of regulation.
In March, more than 20 people were killed and 38 injured when a bus collided with a fuel tanker and burst into flames in southern Helmand province.
Another serious accident involving a fuel tanker took place in December 2022, when the vehicle overturned and caught fire in Afghanistan's high-altitude Salang Pass, killing 31 people.
